Shades of Green Update March 2013

Shades of Green Resort - Wallt Disney World FloridaThis week I was in Central Florida and had the opportunity to drop by Shades of Green to check out what’s going on.

Last year Shades of Green announced a modernization project with which they were going to update many of their facilities.

So, during a quick trip through the resort here’s what I saw.

Shades of Green AAFES Store Moved

AAFES Moved Down The Hall

Shades of Green's AAFES Store Remodeled

Tight Quarters at the AAFES Store

The AAFES store has been closed for remodeling and has been relocated to across from the ticket sales office. This location is much smaller than what the store previously occupied. So selections will be somewhat limited for the time being. But once the remodeling is done I expect to see a much bigger store with a lot more variety. The store hours are from seven in the morning until nine at night.

UPDATE Courtesy of MDT reader Brian: The AAFES re-opening will probably not happen by Memorial Day as expected but should happen in June or early July.

The videogame arcade located by Evergreens, Shades of Green sports bar, has already been remodeled. They have a whole new compliment of larger more high-tech video games for the kids to play. But the size of the arcade is been reduced, one of the rooms that the arcade was located in has now been given over to dining space for Evergreens.

Remote Control Boats Gone

Shades used to have coin operated remote control boats and four-wheel-drive vehicles for the kids to play with, but these are long gone. First the four-wheel-drive switch relocated by evergreens disappeared and recently the boats located right outside of Mangino’s have disappeared as well. These used to be a big hit with the kids, But were holdover from when the resort actually belong to Disney World and I imagine Shades had a hard time keeping them running.

Great New Lobby

Last month Shades finished their lobby renovation and it looks really great! It’s a little more spacious feeling that it used to be.

I pop in there every couple of months just to check on what’s been happening and I haven’t seen any evidence yet of the pool renovations that they talked about during my exclusive interview with Shades of Green last year.

That’s all the happenings at shades of green as of this week. After I was done at Shades I popped over to the Magic Kingdom and it was very crowded so I just grab some of that great Magic Kingdom popcorn and left.

Stay tuned I’ll be back down that way in April and will report on anything that’s going on at Shades of Green the military own and operated resort on Walt Disney World property.

UDATE: The Magnolia Pool closed for renovation1 April 2013.

The pool renovations for the Magnolia pool/hot tub begin April 1st. The Mill Pond pool will be open during this time. The Mill Pond pool is slated to begin renovations in the Fall but no dates are set yet. SOG has stated that one pool will be operational during the renovations.

    Steve:

I just read the newsletter you posted today and was disappointed to hear that SOG just started the Magnolia pool renovations. My family is planning a mini reunion in June and I originally requested we be near that pool and reserved “poolside rooms”. I hope since that pool is not accessible now, that we are given preference to be near the Millpond pool. We made these reservations more than a year in advance because originally we were considered a group and had 14 rooms blocked. Unforeseen circumstances reduced the rooms to six. I sure hope since we reserved poolside rooms, we are near a pool that has water in! Do you have any connection with SOG to find that out for me? I have contacted SOG by email, but have not heard back. Why would they begin renovations this close to summer ?? Thanks in advance if you can get me an answer and peace of mind.

      Hi Joy,

      I totally understand your frustration!

Unfortunately I’ve been unable to establish any kind of special relationship with Shades of Green. My most recent 2 emails to my poc in their office staff have gone unanswered, it’s been as bad as their refusing to meet with me on a day that we’d previously set up to meet.

So what I recommend you do is call the reservation number and ask what they show for any requests. Explain your position and ask them to put near the Mill POnd Pool on your reservation.

I hope you can answer this we will be staying @ SOG mid July, 1 rep said poolside was for the open pool, I asked the front desk and was told it is the luck of the draw construction or an actual pool? With a possible discount if you do not get the pool. I am traveling with a 2, 12, and 17 yr old. Any clue as how to actually get a pool room?
    Thanks
    Jean

Wow, I can’t believe they say you might get a pool view if you reserve one and then that you might get a refund if you don’t get the room…

I can’t believe they would take more reservations for pool view than they had available at the time.

The only suggestion that I have is to get there very early in the day… and hopefully they will have one.

If you don’t get it, I’d make a huge stink and file an IG complaint.

      • Barbara says

When guests make renovations far in advance (Joy said more than a year in advance – I made mine 10 months early) I guess it really isn’t possible for SOG to know how many pool side rooms will be available on a specific date during the renovations. The Magnolia Pool renovation dates changed, and they still have no dates for the Micky Pool. It’s kind of out of their control. At least they won’t be charging pool side rates for the rooms adjacent to the pools being renovated at the time.
