Military Disney Tips Round-Up 21 May 2011

Military Disney Tips Round-Up, Woody (C) Disney

It's a Round-Up Partner

Welcome to this week’s Round-Up, where I share what’s going on at Military Disney Tips and on the web.

It’s been a long week, we had an exercise at work and I put in lots of extra hours. So I didn’t get as much done on the site and blog as I’d have liked to.

I just posted about the Your First Visit did a nice write-up on why we haven’t seen details yet on the 2012 Disney Military Discounts. The missing details, while frustrating, don’t mean the deal is not happening. Rather, it’s that the details are still being worked out. Getting the details right means a couple of things—first, coordinating with the U.S. Military about its role in the eligibility setting and purchasing process, and second, getting the right blackout dates for 2012.

Looking for something to do the day you arrive at Disney? Many people arrive later in the day on their arrival day and don’t want to waste a day of their park ticket on a partial day. Well there is a great new option at Downtown Disney, the AMC Dinner Theatre. The Disney Food Blog has a reviewThe Verdict - For the cost of an average movie (around $11 for adults), guests to the newly renovated Downtown Disney AMC Dine-In Theaters can experience a good movie, good food, and good drinks all at the same time (food and drinks cost extra, of course).

The bar and the food options were both very reasonably priced for an on-property Disney location. All of the food was delicious and worth eating again (especially the French fries).

From Running with the Mouse on the Disney Dispatch there is an post on Disney’s Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge. You’re probably familiar with all of the races held at Disney World and Disneyland, but have you heard of the Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge? According to runDisney, it’s the “ultimate test in endurance with a Disney twist”. Wouldn’t it be nice if this would count towards your PT test?

Lowes will be saluting the troops nation-wide this Memorial Day weekend. They are offering 10% off with a military ID. To further recognize our U.S. armed forces, Lowe’s will provide a military discount on Memorial Day weekend. All active, reserve, retired, and honorably discharged U.S. military personnel, VA benefits recipients, and their immediate family members will receive a 10 percent discount on certain in-store U.S. purchases made during the Memorial Day holiday. The discount is available May 26–May 30. My local Lowes does this year-round does yours? See their press release.

Here is a great link my Command Chief sent out this week Peterson’s DOD MRR Libraries – Education Lifelong Learning Center. There is a huge amount of information on the site to prepare you for: the military, college, civilian jobs, high school, medical training, and grad school. Check it out, could be very helpful.

And the last link while neither Military or Disney is funny (sort of), I ran across it this week, it’s a page on the Center for Disease Control website on how to be prepared for a Zombie Infestation. This tongue in cheek report uses the example of zombies to talk about how to prepare for any disaster. So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored).

Armed Forces Vacation Club May Blowout Sale

The Armed Forces Vacation Club, often shortened to just AFVC, is a great way to save on your theme park vacation stays. AFVC is part of Wyndham Worldwide and they offer 7 night stays at condominium-style timeshare resorts in more than 80 countries to active and retired members of the armed forces, department of defense employees, and select civil servants. Other civil servants who do not qualify can use the sister program Government Employees Travel Opportunities.

Both programs regularly offer week-long stays for $369 ($349 if you book online). But during their May Blowout Sale the price has dropped to $299 per 7 nights. That’s just $42 dollars per night. Many Armed Forces Vacation Club properties offer home-like conveniences, such as balconies or terraces and fully equipped kitchens. And also provide amenities you aren’t likely to get with a typical hotel or motel room, such as on-site recreational facilities, swimming pools, fitness centers, game rooms, gift shops, restaurants and organized activities. Military Disney Tips Featured in May’s the Reserve & National Guard Magazine

Military Disney Tips Featured in the Reserve & National Guard MagazineRecently I was contacted by Janine Boldrin for an interview to be used in her upcoming article for AmeriForce the Reserve & National Guard Magazine on “Sizzling Summer Savings: Expert Tips For Your Next Trip.” She wanted to find out what were the best ways for military members to save on Disney vacations.

I gladly accepted the opportunity to get savings info out to a wider audience. Janine asked me lots of great questions. I passed on the information about the current 2011 Disney Armed Forces Salute, unfortunately the 2012 extension of the Disney Military Salute was not announced prior to the article being submitted, so that info wasn’t included. I also passed on information about the great savings available at Shades of Green and the Armed Forces Vacation Club, and that military discounts were available at Anheuser-Busch parks and Universal Studios Orlando.

Janine interviewed three military travel experts with different focuses for the piece. Also interviewed were:

Joy Awe Editor-in-Chief of Buzz Off Base, an events, travel and entertainment guide for U.S. military and civilians living overseas. Joy has a fantastic looking site that everyone stationed in Europe should check out.

And Diane Fish of Twin Fish Interline Travel which specializes in helping service members match up with the best military rates that are available through Club Med and various cruise lines for great vacation packages.

You can download your copy of the article here or go to the AmeriForce website to view it as well as all the other articles in the May issue. Also look for the Reserve & National Guard to show up at your unit. You can subscribe to the magazine for your unit here.
