Military Disney Tips Featured in May’s the Reserve & National Guard Magazine

Military Disney Tips Featured in the Reserve & National Guard MagazineRecently I was contacted by Janine Boldrin for an interview to be used in her upcoming article for AmeriForce the Reserve & National Guard Magazine on “Sizzling Summer Savings: Expert Tips For Your Next Trip.” She wanted to find out what were the best ways for military members to save on Disney vacations.

I gladly accepted the opportunity to get savings info out to a wider audience. Janine asked me lots of great questions. I passed on the information about the current 2011 Disney Armed Forces Salute, unfortunately the 2012 extension of the Disney Military Salute was not announced prior to the article being submitted, so that info wasn’t included. I also passed on information about the great savings available at Shades of Green and the Armed Forces Vacation Club, and that military discounts were available at Anheuser-Busch parks and Universal Studios Orlando.

Janine interviewed three military travel experts with different focuses for the piece. Also interviewed were:

Joy Awe Editor-in-Chief of Buzz Off Base, an events, travel and entertainment guide for U.S. military and civilians living overseas. Joy has a fantastic looking site that everyone stationed in Europe should check out.

And Diane Fish of Twin Fish Interline Travel which specializes in helping service members match up with the best military rates that are available through Club Med and various cruise lines for great vacation packages.

You can download your copy of the article here or go to the AmeriForce website to view it as well as all the other articles in the May issue. Also look for the Reserve & National Guard to show up at your unit. You can subscribe to the magazine for your unit here.

Military Disney Tips Turns Three

Military-Disney-Tips-Birthday (C) DisneyAt the beginning of this month Military Disney Tips turned three. I wanted to take a moment to say thanks to you my readers. I’m so appreciative of your interest. It’s been my pleasure to try to help you in whatever way that I can to plan for your Disney vacation.

It’s been a big year for MDT, we broke the story on both the extensions of the Disney Armed Forces Salute, both in October 2010 when the offer was renewed for this fiscal year, and again just last month with the extension until September 2012. It’s been a busy year too trying to keep up on the numerous packages and specials offered by Shades of Green throughout the year. Also I was interviewed by AmeriForce Publishing for inclusion in an article about Disney Military discounts. The article is due out later this month in their Reserve & National Guard Magazine.

Over the past year the site has seen fantastic growth. Military Disney Tips now receives nearly 10,000 visitors and 40,000 pageviews per month. Our Newsletter launched last October and has grown to over 390 subscribers. We also started our facebook fan page this past year and now have 220 facebook friends who like it. Just a couple of months ago the Military Disney twitter account was launched too.

The majority of our readers this year have been Stateside, but we also have readers from numerous locations where our military members are stationed: Italy, Germany, Iraq, the UK, Puerto Rico, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan, the UAE, and Bahrain to name some.

Because of the specialized content on this site, many great Disney sites on the net sent visitors our way. I’d like to thank those sites for their support this year. They are:

Yourfirstvisit.net where I’ve been lucky to do quite a few guests posts
disneyfoodblog.com Where AJ has also allowed me to guest post
universal-parks-military-discounts.com our sister site
disboards.com
wdwradio.com
passporterboards.com
mouseowners.com
dismarks.com
usmclife.com
couponingtodisney.com
westoverafrc.org
coastiechicks.net

You also found the site via search engines. Some of the things you were looking for were: Information on Disney’s Military Salute, Universal Studios Military Salute, Sea World Military Discounts, Shades of Green, and the Armed Forces Vacation Club.

Some of your favorite pages were:

Military Discounts
The Disney Military Salute announcement for 2011
Disney’s Armed Forces Salute
Shades of Green

Shades of Green Military Discounted Ticket Overview
and the Military Disney Tips Blog

This year is our third year partnering with Ears of Experience, an authorized Disney vacation planner and Veteran Owned Business. Over 150 of you asked Amy for help making your Disney reservations this past year.

Again I want to say thanks for the Happy Birthday! It’s been my pleasure to provide content that I think you might find helpful and I’m so glad that the site’s growth shows you are enjoying it. I’m looking forward to an even better year coming up. I’ve got several great new projects like my new series of Patriotic Disney posts and several new partners who I’ll be joining with to produce more great content.

Yours, Steve

There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch – At Some Theme Parks

Ticket Boothphoto © 2006 Jackie | more info (via: Wylio)As a webmaster/blogger some neat data that I see is search terms that people have used to find my site. The variations of Disney Military Discount mixed with other words are endless. But I’ve noticed a small but steady amount of people searching for “Free Disney Military Tickets.”

While there was a time that Disney and Universal Orlando offered a free theme park ticket to military members, unfortunately free tickets are a thing of the past. Only Anheuser-Busch continues to offer free tickets to their theme parks.

Disney offered free military theme park tickets three times in the past.

In 1990 after Desert Storm Disney World gave members a free 1-day park-hopper ticket.

The next time Disney offered a free military ticket was in 2002 after the events of 9/11, this was one free 5-day park-hopper for the military member. You could then purchase up to 5 additional 5-day tickets for friends and family. Either basic tickets for $99 or park-hoppers for $124.

Since 2009 military members have had to purchase their own Armed Forces Salute Tickets as well as those for their guests and the price has risen.

Universal Orlando’s most recent free admission for military members ended on 30 March 2010. The member received a free multi-day multi-park theme park ticket and could purchase the same tickets for their guests for $88.

Our good friends at Anheuser-Busch are still offering free admission to their theme parks for the military member and their guests (up to 3 guests), an offer they have had every year since 2004. My hat’s off the Busch theme parks!

So as you can see currently the Orlando Theme Parks run the full spectrum in their offers for the military. From totally free admission to no special Military Salute tickets.

Universal Orlando Military Discount 2011 & 2012 – Orlando Military Discounts Series

Universal Orlando Military Salute

No update to Universal Studio’s stance on a special military offer for 2012.

Welcome to the third installment of the Orlando Military Discounts Series, in which I’ll cover the Military Discounts still available for Universal Orland’s theme parks. The first installment covered Disney’s Armed Forces Salute and the second covered Anheuser-Busch’s Sea World and Busch Garden’s Hero Salute. The final post in the series I’m going to call “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” which will wrap it all up.

Lots of search terms bring visitors to my site, besides people searching for information on Disney Military Discounts I get lots of people searching for Universal Studios Orlando Military Discounts for 2011 and also on Sea World and Busch Gardens Military Discounts.

Universal Studios is not currently offering a special Military Salute Discount offer. In previous years they did, but their most recent Military Salute (7-day hoppers, free for the member & $94 for guests) ended on 30 March 2010, and they have confirmed to me twice that they have no plans for further offers like this.

Here are the specifics on the regular military discounts that are sill available at Universal Orlando.

Military Discounted Universal Orlando theme park tickets – May be purchased at Shades of Green or your base ticket office. (Prices quoted below are for base ITT offices, Shades of Green’s prices are within 2 dollars)

  • 3-Day Adult $131.00 Child $117.00
  • 4-Day Adult $135.00 Child $119.00
  • 7-Day Adult $157.00 Child $139.00

Child tickets for ages 3-9

All multi-day tickets also include fourteen (14) consecutive calendar days of admission to the paid entertainment venues of Universal CityWalk® which commences and includes the first day any portion of the ticket is used.

Military Discounted Blue Man Group Tickets – Universal has continued their Military Discounted Tickets for the Blue Man Group Show at it’s Orlando Florida theme park.

The special military price is $49.00, compared to the regular box office price of $89.00

Blue Man Group tickets are available for sale at select base ticket offices and Shades of Green.

Universal Orlando Military Vacation Packages – These packages are for what Universal calls a 3-night/4-day getaway, and include both theme park tickets (for 2 days) and resort room accommodations. They start at two different price points based upon resort choice and other options.

The two price points are $229.00 and $379.00 per adult. Universal advertises that these prices are up to a 30% savings. These rates are for active, retired, and reserve military personnel.

The cheaper $229 per adult package includes

• 3 night’s accommodations at a Universal Partner Hotel
• 2 Day Base tickets (one park per day) (normally $111 at regular military discounted price)
• Access to live entertainment at Universal CityWalk
• Early Park Admission to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

An example of a Universal Partner Hotel is the Fairfield Inn and Suites on International Drive, Orlando FL.

The more expensive $379 per adult package includes

• All the above from the cheaper package
• An upgrade to one of Universal’s On-Site Deluxe Hotels
• Universal’s Express Plus access to rides (bypass regular standby lines – a $40 + tax per day value)

The On-Site Universal Hotels are:
Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Hard Rock Hotel
Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

These Military Vacation Packages are valid through 21 December 2011.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage Universal Orland to step it up and offer a Military Salute again like it’s competitors Walt Disney Theme Parks and the Anheuser-Busch Company have continued to do.

For some thoughts on why Universal isn’t offering a military salute any more see our sister site Universal Parks Military Discounts
