In order to visit a Disney World theme park. You must have made a reservation prior to entry. Disney uses this system to limit attendance in each park and it is possible for a park to stop taking reservations for very high demand days, sometimes well in advance.

A valid ticket is required and you must link it to those making reservations in your My Disney Experience app. You then use the app to choose what park you would like to visit on what day.

See my WDW Theme Park Reservation Primer

And my Technology Overview for more.

Attractions

Some of the more thrilling attractions have height restrictions. If children are shorter than the set limit, they cannot experience the attraction. Disney will not bend on these restrictions as they are for safety purposes; in many cases they have to do with the attraction seating and associated restraint capability. In some cases just because your child is tall enough to ride, doesn’t mean they are mature enough.

Attractions with height restrictions will be designated for attractions like this: (H33) the H designates height restriction and the following number designates how many inches tall you must be in order to ride. In this example (H33) you must be 33 inches tall to ride. Cast members will measure those in question.

At select Disney World attractions you may “Rider Switch.” If you have a little one who is too short or who doesn’t want to ride the attraction, your family will not have to wait in line twice for each parent to ride while the other stays with the child. Simply tell the attraction cast member at the entrance that you’d like to Rider Switch. Then one adult will wait with the child in a designated area while the other experiences the attraction, then that adult and the child will wait while the rest of the party rides.

On the Theme Park Pages, I’ll be describing the seating capacity and layout of the attractions in the parks. You will find all types of ride vehicles at Disney World; from small continuous feed ride systems to huge stadium seating theatres.

Many rides are of the continuous feed variety. This means that the ride vehicles are mounted one after the other on a track and while running continuously follow each other around the track through the ride. The ride is not turned off (except for handicap boarding) and you board and exit the ride from a moving beltway (like at an airport) moving at the same speed as the vehicles.

When I mention seating capacity, I’ll use terms like theatre seating, four across, and 2+. What I mean when I use the + sign which is usually with the number 2 is that two adults can comfortably sit in the vehicle, 3 can squeeze in or mom and dad with 2 smaller kids. You are free to try to fit all four of you in one car or split up into two.

25 Top Disney World Rides for the Whole Family

The NEW Mountain Challenge in Disney World!

Disney’ Line Intel and Skipping Systems

Disney now has essentially 4 different ways to try to get shorter wait times for their theme park attractions. Attractions that offer virtual queues do not typically offer standby (that is walk up) entrance. You must have a reservation, either a Virtual Queue Boarding Group or Lightning Lane.

Virtual Queues must be reserved at specific times of the day in order to get one. A Virtual Queue is a sequentially numbered, one-hour block of time (or Boarding Group) in which you may go to the attraction in question and experience it. You will be notified by the My Disney Experience app when your Boarding Group is called. You can also track the numerical progress of the groups through the day in the app.

On each day of your visit, you may have the opportunity to join the virtual queue at daily distribution times, which are subject to change or cancellation as availability allows. Distribution schedules will be available in the My Disney Experience app, but are typically 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Virtual queue reservations for the day are typically all gone by 7:01 a.m. more are released at 1 p.m. based on how the day has gone so far with using up the initial reservations.

Valid admission is required to reserve a Boarding Group and all military tickets also require a theme park reservation.

To try to secure a Virtual Queue Boarding Group in the morning round, someone in your party needs to be awake prior to 7 a.m. and use the app to try to secure a Group at exactly 7! You can do this from anywhere, you do not need to be in the park. If you don’t get one then you can try again at 1 p.m. you must be in the park in question to do so at 1.

Once your attraction virtual queue is redeemed, you can try to join another attraction virtual queue, if available.

See my Virtual Queue page for more info and current attractions with Queues.

Single Rider Lines

Several attractions at Walt Disney World have single rider lines. These lines are used to fill all available space on the ride vehicles. For instance, a party of three will take up two rows in a ride vehicle that seats in rows of two. Some of these will be generic, others will be themed for the land or area they are being sold in, e.g. a Mickey Mouse in a space suit in Tomorrowland, Aerosmith items at Rock n’ Rollercoaster, and Star Wars items at Star Tours. Other items are not at all Disney centric, e.g. Books on American history at the American Adventure, Canadian souvenirs at the Epcot’s Canada Pavilion, or wines and foods from the various counties at Epcot’s World showcase.

Walt Disney World makes lots of money on souvenirs (and food) that helps offset discounts like the Armed Forces Salute. They use many techniques to encourage you to make purchases such as, when you exit the parks, the merchandise shops are on the right side of the street or pathway (Americans naturally walk on the right, morning type foods are on the right as you enter) or by designing their newer attractions so the ride exits into a gift shop which sells items associated with that attraction. They will also pipe tantalizing smells, such as that of baked goods to the outdoor areas near restaurants to encourage you to enter!

Package Delivery

A great service that Disney World offers is Package Delivery. Any item that you purchase in the theme parks can be delivered to either your on-property resort (Disney Resorts, Shades of Green, the Swan and Dolphin, Disney Springs Hotels, and The Four Seasons) or to the park entrance (for pickup on your way out). This way you do not have to lug your purchase around the park all day!

===>Note: Not available at this time.
