While nearby areas evolved over time, this specific footprint remained largely untouched until the Pleasure Island project broke ground in the late 1980s. Its transformation from empty land to nightlife district\u2014and finally into the dining-heavy Landing\u2014makes it one of the most dramatically changed areas in Disney Springs.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1975%E2%80%931989_Pre%E2%80%93Pleasure_Island_Undeveloped_Waterfront_With_One_Exception\"><\/span>1975\u20131989: Pre\u2013Pleasure Island (Undeveloped Waterfront With One Exception)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village (later Disney Village Marketplace) opened in 1975, the area that would become The Landing did <strong>not<\/strong> contain shops, dining, or entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Only one thing was located in the area,\u00a0<strong>The Empress Lilly<\/strong> (1977) \u2014 a stationary paddle-wheeler restaurant docked on the water\u2019s edge, which would later become Fulton\u2019s Crab House and today\u2019s Paddlefish.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that point, the land to the west was unoccupied, with no structures, restaurants, or development until Pleasure Island was approved in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1989%E2%80%932008_Pleasure_Island\"><\/span>1989\u20132008: Pleasure Island<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The undeveloped land became part of <strong>Pleasure Island<\/strong>, Disney\u2019s dedicated nighttime entertainment district. This era brought dramatic construction to the western waterfront and introduced themed industrial architecture, bridges, and nightlife venues.<\/p>\n<p>Pleasure Island was a self contained area with an admission fee required for entrance. Several of the clubs also had cover charges!<\/p>\n<p>Major clubs and locations built within or adjacent to what is now The Landing included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Adventurers Club<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Comedy Warehouse<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>8Trax<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mannequins Dance Palace<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Motion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>BET Soundstage Club<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For nearly two decades, Pleasure Island was the centerpiece of adult nightlife at Walt Disney World, famous for its nightly New Year\u2019s Eve countdown.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2008%E2%80%932015_Post-Club_Transition_Era\"><\/span>2008\u20132015: Post-Club Transition Era<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Pleasure Island clubs closed in 2008 as Disney shifted its focus away from adult nightlife, partly due to declining attendance.
