However, if you focus on the right&#8230;Frontierland begins in Liberty Square.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberty Belle riverboat boards and docks in Liberty Square. While such vessels could be found in the east, <strong>they were key elements of the west<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1423124685\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=milidisntips-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399377&amp;creativeASIN=1423124685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Imagineering Field Guide to Magic Kingdom<\/a>\u00a0calls the Liberty Belle an example of a &#8220;staple of early frontier life,&#8221; and calls it a &#8220;transitional element linking [the] two lands.&#8221;( 72.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3864\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3864 size-large\" title=\"The Liberty Belle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-540x403.jpg\" alt=\"Patriotic Disney - Frontierland - Liberty Bell River Boat\" width=\"540\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-540x403.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-600x448.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-509x380.jpg 509w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-400x299.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle-402x300.jpg 402w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/The-Liberty-Belle.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The role of the Liberty Square waterfront in beginning the theme of Frontierland was even clearer back in the day when the long-gone Mike Fink Keelboats still loaded from this waterfront. Keelboats, while found on any navigable river, were essential features of the Ohio, the Mississippi and their sources.<\/p>\n<p>The water itself&#8211;&#8220;Rivers of America&#8221;&#8211;is also meant to represent the Ohio, Mississippi, and the other great rivers of the western frontier, even in Liberty Square. This too was even clearer in the past when the &#8220;Indian Canoes&#8221; still ran from Frontierland, so that the waterway at any given moment could show canoes, keelboats, a riverboat, and the rafts used to access Tom Sawyer Island.<\/p>\n<p>So Frontierland begins on the left at the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon, but on the right at the waterfront of Liberty Square.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"THE_RIDES_AND_ATTRACTIONS_OF_FRONTIERLAND\"><\/span>THE RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS OF FRONTIERLAND<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Frontierland has two major <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/07\/19\/the-e-ticket-ride-and-its-discontents\/\">&#8220;E&#8221; Ticket rides<\/a>&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/07\/18\/review-splash-mountain-at-the-magic-kingdom\/\">Splash Mountain<\/a> and Big Thunder Mountain&#8211;and a number of minor attractions of limited appeal.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>None of the rides in Frontierland refer<strong> directly<\/strong> to any of the ideals discussed earlier. The only ideals even glanced at are in Splash Mountain&#8217;s references to Br&#8217;er Rabbit&#8217;s &#8220;trickster&#8221; schemes&#8211;whose roots, while in African (and Native American) oral traditions, also resonate with populist resistance to elites.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, Frontierland pays homage to pioneer ideals with its architecture and details. The right side has not just the &#8220;rivers,&#8221; island, and watercraft of Tom Sawyer and Mike Fink, but also is lined with a boardwalk. This boardwalk is meant to have a &#8220;dockside&#8221; feel, and reinforce the roles of the buildings as riverfront settlements.<\/p>\n<p>The buildings on the left side approximate (until Splash Mountain) different building styles from different times&#8211;coming closer in to today the more distant from Liberty Square, taking you from the old west to the southwest. Note the street numbers on these buildings, which &#8220;roughly indicate the year in which the building is set.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1423124685\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=milidisntips-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399377&amp;creativeASIN=1423124685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Imagineering Field Guide<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000ILZ68C\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=playoufirfamv-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399373&amp;creativeASIN=B000ILZ68C\">\u00a0<\/a>, 52.)<\/p>\n<p>Splash Mountain wrecks this progression. Its exterior is themed to itself, rather than to Frontierland, and the ride&#8217;s pre-Civil War, southern setting reverses both the geographic and the temporal progression of Frontierland so far. Big Thunder Mountain, with its Monument Valley, Utah, post-gold rush setting, flips geography yet again.<\/p>\n<p>As these last two are among the most popular rides in the park, <strong>no one really cares<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>From Liberty Square to the end of Frontierland, you&#8217;ll find the following attractions in order (the &#8220;ratings&#8221; are from The Your First Visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Comprehensive Guide to Rides<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Liberty Belle steamboat. <\/strong> Literally part of Liberty Square, but as noted above spiritually part of Frontierland. A slow and gentle journey around Tom Sawyer Island, with some moderately fun views that you can otherwise only see from the island itself, or from the WDW Railroad. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: best-loved. Third-graders through adults: other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Liberty-Bell-Riverboat.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3100\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3100 size-full\" title=\"Liberty-Bell-Riverboat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Liberty-Bell-Riverboat.jpg\" alt=\"Liberty-Bell-Riverboat\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Liberty-Bell-Riverboat.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Liberty-Bell-Riverboat-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Liberty-Bell-Riverboat-507x380.jpg 507w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Frontierland Shooting Gallery. <\/strong> One of only two attractions in the Magic Kingdom not paid for as part of your admission ticket. For a buck, you get to use a light-powered rifle to shoot at targets; the targets, if hit, create various fun actions. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: best-loved. Third-graders through adults: skippable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Country Bear Jamboree<\/strong>. First time visitors more into country, roots or backwoods music will be delighted; those less interested may find it dull. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: other. Third-graders through adults: skippable<\/p>\n<p>(Rafts to)<strong> Tom Sawyer Island. <\/strong>Tom Sawyer Island is best viewed as interesting terrain where your kids can fairly freely run around, not have much externally-imposed structure to their experience, and not wait in lines. For some families, this makes it a godsend; others won&#8217;t find it sufficiently interesting to be worth the wait for the rafts and the walking around. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: best-loved. Third-graders through adults: skippable<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Tom-Sawyer-Island.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3852\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3852 size-full\" title=\"Tom-Sawyer-Island\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Tom-Sawyer-Island.jpg\" alt=\"Patriotic Disney - Frontierland - Tom Sawyer Island\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Tom-Sawyer-Island.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Tom-Sawyer-Island-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/07\/18\/review-splash-mountain-at-the-magic-kingdom\/\">Splash Mountain<\/a>.<\/strong> To me, the best example in all of Disney World of fully-realized imagineering possibility. Much more of a fun, charming, detailed, interesting ride than the water-slide makes it appear from outside. You may get wet. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: avoid. A slow, slightly interesting railroad ride, with a few minor displays that can&#8217;t be seen from anywhere else, that can be taken either as a round trip or to another station. <a href=\"http:\/\/yourfirstvisit.net\/2011\/03\/09\/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions\/\">Rating:<\/a> Pre-schoolers: best-loved.
