I have plenty of those. This is more personal. These are the practical, experience-based tips that come from decades of Disney vacations, military family travel, former Cast Member experience, good decisions, bad decisions, hot days, tired feet, soaked shoes, great resort evenings, and more than a few lessons learned the hard way.

Some of these tips are about saving time. Some are about saving money. Some are about avoiding stress. And some are simply about making your Walt Disney World vacation more enjoyable.

If you are planning a Disney trip, especially as a military family, these are the kinds of things I would want you to think about before you go.

Use Arrival and Departure Days Wisely

Most Walt Disney World trips have at least one awkward travel day. You arrive sometime between late morning and evening, or you leave for home later in the day and have a few hours to fill.

It is tempting to squeeze in a theme park visit, but that is not always the best use of a full day of park admission. If you are only going to be in a park for a few tired arrival-day hours, you may be better off saving that ticket day and enjoying Walt Disney World in a lower-pressure way.

Activate Military Tickets Before Your First Park Morning

If you purchased Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets from a base ticket office, they will need to be activated before first use. The last thing most families want to do on their first park morning is deal with a line for ticket activation when everyone is excited to get inside.

If your arrival day is not a park day, consider using that time to take care of ticket activation. This can be done at theme park ticket windows, the Transportation and Ticket Center, EPCOT’s International Gateway, both water parks, or the Disney Springs Ticket Center.

One easy option is to visit Disney Springs for dinner, shopping, or entertainment and stop by the Disney Ticket Center while you are there.

You could also combine ticket activation with a resort-hopping evening. For example, tour the Magic Kingdom Resort Area by monorail, have a meal or drink at one of the resorts, and stop by the Magic Kingdom Guest Relations windows.

If you are staying in the BoardWalk area, you are able to walk or boat to EPCOT’s International Gateway or Disney’s Hollywood Studios main entrance.

Note: Your whole party will need to be present for Salute Ticket activation.

Also note: Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets purchased from the Shades of Green Ticket Office, either in person or long distance, are typically pre-activated and do not require the same activation stop.

Enjoy Your Resort Pool

After a travel day, sometimes the best Disney plan is the simplest one: check in, unpack, and head to the pool.

You have just spent hours driving, flying, hauling luggage, navigating airports, or getting everyone across Central Florida. The parks may open early, close late, and tempt you to keep pushing from morning until night. But in the summer heat, or with young kids, or even with adults who know better but forget, staying in the parks all day can be a recipe for a meltdown.

You can see it happen every day in the parks after noon. Tired kids are crying. Parents are frustrated. Everyone is hot. Clothes are soaked. Feet hurt. People are hungry, overstimulated, and done.

That is where the mid-day break comes in.

Our favorite rhythm is to arrive early, tour during the more productive morning hours, and then leave around lunch or early afternoon. You can eat before you leave, eat at your resort, or grab something along the way. The key is to get out before the worst of the heat and crowds catch up with you.

Back at your resort, you can cool off, nap, swim, shower, put on dry clothes, change socks, relax in air conditioning, do laundry, or just stop moving for a while.

Then, around 5 or 6 pm, head back out refreshed. The evening feels like a second park day instead of the miserable final stretch of the first one.

This strategy is especially useful in the summer because you may also miss the daily afternoon rain shower. Dry clothes, dry socks, and maybe even dry shoes can do wonders for your mood.

A convenient resort makes mid-day breaks much easier. This is one reason I pay close attention to resort location when planning a trip.

I highly recommend this. We did it when our kids were younger, and my wife and I still do it now that it is often just the two of us.

For a deeper look, see my full guide to Walt Disney World mid-day breaks.

Prepare for Florida Weather

Florida weather can make or break a Disney day if you are not ready for it.

Heat, humidity, afternoon rain, lightning, and occasional cold snaps all affect how you tour. The better prepared you are, the less the weather can derail your vacation.

Sunscreen

I have lived in Florida, and even when I was “adapted,” every Walt Disney World theme park day started with sunscreen before leaving the room.

Even in winter, my face gets sunscreen. You may be outside for 10 to 12 hours in the strong Florida sun. Do not risk a painful sunburn early in your vacation.

Also, think about what you are wearing. Do not wear clothing that exposes skin that rarely sees the sun unless you are prepared to protect that skin. Shirts with odd cutouts, one-shoulder tops, thin straps, backless designs, or tank tops can create very strange and very painful sunburn patterns.

Dress comfortably, but dress smart. You do not want to come home with a bright red oval on your back, a single burned shoulder, or strap marks that hurt for the rest of the trip.

Don’t do this! You can see that the day prior, she wore a backless shirt or dress with straps in an X from her sunburn, then today she’s wearing this dress, exposing only one shoulder. Not Recommended!

Rain Gear

Bring lightweight ponchos or rain jackets. You do not need anything fancy, but you do need something.

Florida rain can arrive quickly, especially in the summer. Some days it is a short shower. Other days it is a serious downpour. Having rain gear in your park bag can be the difference between continuing your day and being miserable for hours.

I also recommend thinking about your feet. Wet socks and shoes can ruin an evening. If the forecast looks bad, consider packing extra socks or having a second pair of shoes back at the resort for later.

This is another reason the mid-day break is so useful. You can get out of wet clothes, dry off, and restart the day.

Warm Clothing

It can get cold at Walt Disney World.

Not often, and not usually for long, but it happens. Central Florida can see temperatures in the 50s, 40s, and even the 30s during cold snaps.

If you are visiting in winter, watch the forecast before you pack. Bring appropriate warm clothing if needed: long pants, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, or gloves.

During cold snaps, you will see plenty of people wearing whatever they packed to lounge around the hotel room because they did not plan for cold weather. Disney will gladly sell you sweatshirts, but that can get expensive fast.

Prepare Your Body for Disney Walking

You may be in good shape. You may run, work out, pass military fitness tests, or walk regularly. That still does not always prepare you for the kind of long, repetitive, stop-and-go walking that happens at Walt Disney World.

Fitness Preparation

A Disney trip can mean 6 to 10 or more miles of walking per day, plus hours of standing in lines, waiting for transportation, and walking on hard surfaces.

In the months before your trip, add regular walking if you are not already doing it. Several longer walks per week can help. Core strength, stretching, and keeping your back, hips, and legs loose can also make a difference.

The goal is not to train like an athlete. The goal is to keep your body from being shocked by several long park days in a row.

Shoes

I have seen all kinds of footwear at Disney: flip-flops, flimsy sandals, huge wedge heels, dress shoes, and even stilettos.

Just don’t.

You need comfortable, supportive, broken-in shoes. If you are buying new shoes for the trip, get them at least a month ahead of time and wear them regularly before you leave.

Do not break in new shoes at Walt Disney World.

If possible, bring more than one pair. Switching shoes can help your feet, and having a dry backup pair is very useful after rain.

Keep Your Phone Charged

There was a time when no one would have imagined that a phone battery could affect a theme park day. I consider that a Disney park bag essential now.

Disney also has portable phone charging kiosks located throughout Walt Disney World Resort. These third-party kiosks allow guests to purchase portable chargers on property. Policies, prices, and swap rules can change, so I would not rely on them as my only charging plan.

My preference is to start the day with a fully charged phone and carry my own backup battery.

For more packing suggestions, see my Disney packing checklist.

Think About Safety Without Dwelling on It

Personal security is something military members and families naturally understand. But keep a small part of your attention on what is happening around you, just as you would in any crowded public place.

Disney has significant security procedures in place, including screening at park entrances, uniformed security, law enforcement presence, K-9 teams, and additional security measures guests may never see.

Disney also has procedures for severe weather, sheltering in place, and other unusual situations. If Cast Members give instructions during a storm, delay, evacuation, or emergency, follow them.

For more on weather planning, see my guide to hurricanes and thunderstorms at Walt Disney World and Shades of Green.

Remember That Disney Resorts Are Part of the Vacation

One mistake many families make is thinking the theme parks are the entire Walt Disney World vacation.

The parks are the main event, of course. But the resorts, transportation, restaurants, lounges, pools, recreation, and atmosphere are a big part of what makes Disney World special.

Some of our favorite Disney memories are not from attractions at all. They are from wandering a resort, watching fireworks from outside a park, having a relaxed meal, taking a boat ride, exploring a lobby, or ending the night somewhere peaceful.

If you have the time, leave room in your trip for these experiences. You may be surprised how much they add.

A Quick Word About Disney Etiquette

This post used to include a large section on theme park etiquette, but that topic really deserves its own space.

Walt Disney World is crowded, and a little awareness goes a long way. Things like stopping in the middle of walkways, blocking paths, saving spots in line, taking tables too early, and using phones in dark rides can all affect the guests around you.

For that full discussion, see my separate guide to Disney World etiquette.

Final Thoughts

After more than 50 years of Disney trips, my biggest advice is this: plan enough to make smart choices, but do not plan the joy out of your vacation.

Use your arrival and departure days wisely. Activate military tickets ahead of time if needed. Take the mid-day break. Wear good shoes. Use sunscreen. Pack rain gear. Keep your phone charged. Prepare for the weather. Give yourself time to enjoy the resorts.

And most importantly, remember that you are there to make memories, not complete a checklist.

Some of our best Disney moments have happened when we slowed down, changed plans, or noticed something we would have missed while rushing to the next attraction.

Walt Disney World can be complicated, crowded, expensive, and exhausting. But with the right approach, it can still be absolutely magical.

Over to You

What is your best Walt Disney World trip tip?

Is there something you learned the hard way that other families should know before they go?

Let us know in the comments below!

Frequently Asked Questions About Walt Disney World Trip Tips

Should I use a theme park ticket on arrival day?

It depends on when you arrive and how much energy your family has. If you arrive late in the day, it may be better to save the ticket and enjoy Disney Springs, your resort pool, a resort meal, or a resort-hopping evening instead.

Do military Disney tickets need to be activated?

Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets purchased from many military ticket offices may need to be activated before first use. Tickets purchased from the Shades of Green Ticket Office are typically pre-activated. Always check current procedures before your trip.

Is a mid-day break worth it at Walt Disney World?

Yes, especially during hot, crowded, or longer trips. A mid-day break can help your family avoid the worst heat, afternoon rain, tired feet, and park meltdowns. Returning in the evening refreshed can make the day much more enjoyable.

What shoes should I wear to Walt Disney World?

Wear comfortable, supportive shoes that are already broken in. Do not wear brand-new shoes for the first time at Disney World. If possible, bring more than one pair so you can rotate shoes or have a dry backup after rain.

Do I need a portable charger at Disney World?

Yes, a portable charger is highly recommended. Your phone is used heavily for My Disney Experience, Mobile Order, Lightning Lane, maps, wait times, photos, and communication. Disney has portable charging kiosks, but bringing your own backup battery is usually the best plan.

How to Use These Walt Disney World Tips

Step 1: Decide whether arrival day should be a park day

If you arrive late or expect to be tired, consider skipping the parks and using that day for Disney Springs, resort time, dining, or ticket activation.

Step 2: Take care of military ticket activation early

If your tickets require activation, try to handle that before your first park morning so you are not delayed when everyone is ready to enter the park.

Step 3: Plan at least one mid-day break

Build a break into your hottest or longest park days, especially if you are traveling with children, older family members, or anyone who needs downtime.

Step 4: Prepare for walking and weather

Bring broken-in shoes, sunscreen, rain gear, comfortable clothing, and anything else your family needs to handle Florida sun, rain, and long days.

Step 5: Keep your phone powered

Start each day with a fully charged phone and carry a portable charger so you can use Disney’s app-based tools without worrying about your battery.

Step 6: Leave room for non-park experiences

Make time for Disney Springs, resort hopping, pools, lounges, campfires, mini golf, or other lower-pressure Disney experiences.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "FAQPage",
      "@id": "https://www.militarydisneytips.com/blog/disney-tips/my-best-walt-disney-world-tips/#faq",
      "mainEntity": [
        {
          "@type": "Question",
"name": "Should I use a theme park ticket on arrival day?",
          "acceptedAnswer": {
            "@type": "Answer",
"text": "It depends on when you arrive and how much energy your family has.
