Hawaii was the opposite. Thoughts<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<p>In May, Tracy and I traveled to Oahu with our daughter Heather, son-in-law Steve, our two granddaughters, and our son Will. We spent six nights at Disney&#8217;s Aulani Resort before making a brief stop in California on the way home.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_We_Chose_Aulani\"><\/span>Why We Chose Aulani<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Lobby.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Lobby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Lobby.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Lobby-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Lobby-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was a multi-generational family vacation, and Aulani turned out to be a perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p>Our son Will flew in from California a few days before we arrived and spent time exploring some of Oahu&#8217;s historical sites on his own before joining us at the resort. Having everyone together under one roof for the week gave us plenty of family time while still allowing everyone to enjoy the vacation at their own pace.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in a two-bedroom DVC villa using Disney Vacation Club points. Our original lunch plans at Off the Hook disappeared when the restaurant closed, so we regrouped and headed to Waikiki instead.<\/p>\n<p>While the unexpected change wasn&#8217;t ideal after a long travel day, it ended up becoming one of those vacation stories we still talk about.<\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed lunch at Duke&#8217;s Waikiki, stocked up on supplies at Target, and adjusted our plans on the fly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Surprise_How_Relaxing_Aulani_Is\"><\/span>The Surprise: How Relaxing Aulani Is<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The biggest surprise of the trip was how relaxing the entire experience felt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Waikolohe-Valley.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Waikolohe-Valley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Waikolohe-Valley.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Waikolohe-Valley-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Waikolohe-Valley-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aulani is a Disney resort, but it doesn&#8217;t feel anything like a Walt Disney World vacation. There was no pressure to rush from attraction to attraction. Instead, our days revolved around the pools, the beach, good food, family time, and simply enjoying where we were.<\/p>\n<p>By the second day, we had settled into a completely different vacation rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>The girls made Mickey ears, participated in activities around the resort, met Disney characters, and enjoyed the Menehune adventures. Having dedicated seating, shade, and a comfortable place for everyone to gather made the experience dramatically more enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>If your budget allows, I&#8217;d absolutely do it.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if we stayed longer, I&#8217;d probably book even more cabana days.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pearl_Harbor_A_Powerful_Experience\"><\/span>Pearl Harbor: A Powerful Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/USS-Arizona-Memorial.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/USS-Arizona-Memorial.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/USS-Arizona-Memorial.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/USS-Arizona-Memorial-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/USS-Arizona-Memorial-768x478.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>I had been there before, more than twenty years ago during Air Force travels, and Steve had visited previously as well. For everyone else, it was their first visit.<\/p>\n<p>The museums and exhibits were interesting, but the most powerful moment was taking the boat to the USS Arizona Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy boat crew emphasized repeatedly that visitors should be respectful and quiet while visiting the memorial. It&#8217;s a memorial to the sailors and Marines who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.<\/p>\n<p>For our family, it was one of the most meaningful experiences of the trip.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1566\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exploring_Oahu\"><\/span>Exploring Oahu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1642\">After Pearl Harbor, we continued across the island to the Dole Plantation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1809\">Like many visitors, we stopped for the famous Dole Whip, explored the grounds, and enjoyed seeing another piece of Hawaii that most Disney visitors never experience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1809\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-Direction-Signs.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-Direction-Signs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-Direction-Signs.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dole-Plantation-Direction-Signs-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"2011\">One thing we learned during this trip is that Oahu offers plenty to see beyond Aulani. At the same time, we also discovered that we were surprisingly happy spending most of our vacation at the resort.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2277\">That balance is something we&#8217;d probably approach differently on a future visit. We enjoyed seeing Pearl Harbor and other parts of the island, but if we returned tomorrow, we&#8217;d likely add several more nights at Aulani rather than adding additional sightseeing days.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Best_Experience_Aulanis_Luau\"><\/span>The Best Experience: Aulani&#8217;s Luau<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If I had to recommend just one experience at Aulani, it would be the luau.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"adthrive-video-player in-post\" data-video-id=\"QyNhtVmM\" data-player-type=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Mickey and Minnie do the Hula at Disney&#8217;s Aulani Resort and Spa&#8217;s Luau<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We attended both Aulani&#8217;s Ka Wa&#8217;a Luau and the luau at the Hale Koa Hotel later in the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Both offered Hawaiian entertainment and food, but Aulani&#8217;s production was on an entirely different level.<\/p>\n<p>The storytelling, music, dancing, setting, food, and overall production quality created one of the most memorable evenings of our vacation.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re only going to do one luau during your trip, I&#8217;d choose Aulani&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Food\"><\/span>The Food<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the pleasant surprises was how much we enjoyed the dining throughout the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Duke&#8217;s Waikiki was outstanding and easily one of our favorite meals on Oahu.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41466\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dukes-Waikiki-Ribs-and-Chicken-Plate.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41466\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dukes-Waikiki-Ribs-and-Chicken-Plate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dukes-Waikiki-Ribs-and-Chicken-Plate.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dukes-Waikiki-Ribs-and-Chicken-Plate-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dukes-Waikiki-Ribs-and-Chicken-Plate-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dukes Waikiki Ribs and Chicken Plate<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At Aulani, Makahiki ended up being our favorite dining experience. The plan being to ease the transition back to Eastern Time while also giving us an excuse to visit Disney California Adventure, enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disneyland-resorts-downtown-disney\/din-tai-fung-world-famous-dumplings-at-downtown-disney\/\">Din Tai Fung<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disney-military-discounts\/broken-spell-lounge-at-the-disneyland-hotel\/\">Broken Spell Lounge<\/a>, two of our Disneyland Favorites. It was a fun way to end the trip, but Hawaii was unquestionably the focus of this vacation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Wed_Do_Differently\"><\/span>What We&#8217;d Do Differently<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The biggest lesson from this trip is simple.<\/p>\n<p>Stay longer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Main-Pool.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Main-Pool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Main-Pool.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Main-Pool-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disneys-Aulani-Main-Pool-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Six nights sounded like plenty when we booked the vacation. By the time we left, it didn&#8217;t feel like enough.<\/p>\n<p>If we return, we&#8217;ll likely spend less time in Waikiki. While Duke&#8217;s was excellent, the area felt much more like a busy tourist city than the relaxed Hawaiian atmosphere we enjoyed at Aulani. It was how little desire we had to leave it.<\/p>\n<p>Before the trip, I assumed we&#8217;d spend much more time exploring Oahu. Instead, we found ourselves wanting to spend more time at Aulani enjoying the pools, beach, dining, activities, and simply being together as a family.<\/p>\n<p>For multi-generational travel, I honestly think that&#8217;s one of Aulani&#8217;s greatest strengths.
