href="https://www.militarydisneytips.com/blog/the-disney-armed-forces-salute-military-ticket-and-room-discounts/"> special military tickets and resort discounts that thousands of military families use today grew out of a series of temporary promotions created during very different moments in Disney and military history. Some lasted only a few months. Others were extended. At times, the Salute disappeared entirely. And even after the current series began in 2009, there was no guarantee from year to year that Disney would offer it again.

Over time, what began as an occasional response to extraordinary circumstances evolved into one of the most valuable military travel benefits available to eligible military families.

I’ve had an unusual vantage point on much of that history. My family used one of Disney’s post-Desert Storm military offers in 1991. I started Military Disney Tips before the modern Armed Forces Salute began in 2009, and for many years I reported on each renewal as it happened. Along the way, I developed direct relationships with Disney officials responsible for the military offers and was sometimes able to take questions and problems from military families directly to Disney.

That history is worth preserving—not just because it’s interesting, but because it explains why today’s Armed Forces Salute works the way it does.

Before the Armed Forces Salute: Disney’s 1991 Desert Storm Offer

My own history with Disney military discounts goes back well before Military Disney Tips started in 2007.

After Operation Desert Storm, Disney offered U.S. military personnel a special complimentary ticket. But it established a pattern we would see again: during an extraordinary period affecting the military and the travel industry, Disney created a special military offer that went well beyond its ordinary military ticket discounts.

And then it went away.

2002: The Disney Armed Forces Salute Arrives

The first promotion I’ve been able to document using the Disney’s Armed Forces Salute name came a decade later, in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Travel had fallen sharply, and Disney was dealing with the same tourism downturn affecting the rest of the industry.

Disney even stopped construction on in-progress new resorts due to decreases in attendance!

Beginning 1 January 2002, Disney offered eligible active-duty military members, Coast Guard members, and activated National Guard and Reserve members a remarkable Walt Disney World benefit: a complimentary seven-day ticket.

Eligible members could also purchase up to five tickets for family members or friends at 50 percent off.

Disney offered discounted resort rooms as well, including a $49 nightly rate at the All-Star Resorts.

There are some important differences between this offer and today’s Salute.

Retired military members were not included. Activated Guard and Reserve members had to present their active-duty orders. And if the military member couldn’t travel, a spouse could purchase the discounted companion tickets, but the free ticket reserved for the military member wasn’t transferred to the spouse.

The original promotion ran through 30 April 2002.

There was, however, an important accommodation for military members who couldn’t possibly use it.

Disney established a special extension for members whose military duties prevented them from taking leave during the entire original offer period. With military ID, qualifying orders, and a Disney service-file number, they could use the ticket portion of the Salute through the end of December 2002.

The resort promotion did not receive the same extension.

That distinction is worth noticing because it appears repeatedly throughout Salute history: the ticket offer and resort-room offer may share the Armed Forces Salute name, but Disney does not necessarily administer them as one inseparable benefit.

2003: Disney Does It Again

The Armed Forces Salute returned in May 2003.

At Walt Disney World, eligible military members received a complimentary five-day ticket and could purchase up to five additional five-day tickets for $99 each plus tax.

Disneyland participated as well, with a complimentary three-day ticket and discounted companion tickets.

This time Disney went beyond the theme parks and resorts. Disney Cruise Line also offered special military rates as part of the promotion.

The Walt Disney World and Disneyland Salute ran through 19 December 2003.

Then the Armed Forces Salute disappeared again.

For the next several years, military families could still purchase Disney’s regular military-discounted tickets through military ticket offices and Shades of Green. Those discounts were useful, but they were nothing like the deeply discounted—and sometimes free—tickets Disney had offered in 2002 and 2003.

At that point, there was no reason to think the Armed Forces Salute would return, much less evolve into the recurring Disney military benefit it is today.

2009: The Modern Armed Forces Salute Begins

That changed during another major economic downturn.

As the recession took hold in late 2008, Disney announced a new Armed Forces Salute beginning 4 January 2009.

This is the beginning of the modern, recurring Armed Forces Salute.

And the 2009 offer was extraordinary.

At Walt Disney World, eligible military members received a complimentary five-day ticket that included both Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More privileges. In fact, right up until the 2010Salute was announced, Disney was adamant that there would be no follow-on to the 2009 offer.

2010: From a Free Ticket to the Six-Ticket Model

Disney renewed the Salute for 2010, but made a fundamental change.

The complimentary military-member ticket disappeared.

Instead, an eligible military member could purchase up to six four-day promotional tickets.

At Walt Disney World, those tickets cost $99 each, with Park Hopper and add-on Water Park Fun & More options available.

That basic structure—a limited allotment of deeply discounted tickets that includes the eligible member’s ticket—became the foundation of the Armed Forces Salute we know today.

The 2010 offer also illustrates just how uncertain the program still was.

The tickets could be used from January into September, but Disney initially allowed them to be purchased only through July 31. Disney later extended the purchase deadline.

For a military family that hadn’t bought its tickets yet, that was effectively an extension of the Salute.

That distinction became important during these early years because Disney was still renewing, extending, and modifying the Salute in ways that could make even the phrase “offer period” surprisingly complicated.

The Armed Forces Salute Isn’t Really One Offer

Another important lesson emerged during the transition in late 2010 to the 2010-2011 fiscal-year Salute.

The previous Salute ticket offer ended on 30 September after Disney stated repeatedly that the Salute was not returning.

Then Disney surprised us by announcing a Salute Room Offer on 4 October.

A Salute Ticket Offer followed it on 24 October!

For a period in October 2010, military families could book the new Disney military room discount even though the corresponding new Salute ticket offer wasn’t yet available.

At the time, Disney personnel explained to me that the benefits were handled differently. Disney is totally in control of their room offer, while the Salute tickets involve a negotiated, signed contract between Disney and MWR. Disney personnel told me the delay with the ticket offer was because the contract had not yet been signed.

The history repeatedly demonstrates the larger point:

When we casually talk about “the Armed Forces Salute,” we’re actually talking about several benefits that can move on different timelines.

Historically, it helps to think about four major pieces:

Walt Disney World Salute tickets

Walt Disney World military room discounts

Disneyland Salute tickets

Disneyland military room discounts

They have differed over the years in announcement dates, eligibility details, validity periods, blockouts, availability, distribution, and renewal timing.

Understanding that makes some of the stranger moments in Salute history much easier to explain.

The Salute Wasn’t Yet an Annual Guarantee

Looking backward from today, it’s tempting to see an uninterrupted line from 2009 forward.

That’s not how it felt at the time.

Every approaching expiration raised the same question:

Is Disney going to renew the Armed Forces Salute?

Military families wanted to plan vacations months in advance. They wanted to reserve Disney resort rooms. Later, they would need to make dining reservations and eventually FastPass+ selections.

But Disney’s military promotion might still be scheduled to expire before their trip.

That uncertainty became one of the recurring stories I covered at Military Disney Tips.

In April 2011, Disney made a surprise announcement that the existing 2010-2011 Salute would be extended all the way through September 2012. This wasn’t simply presented as another clean annual offer. It was an extension of the existing promotion.

And it produced one of the strangest ticket-allotment periods in Salute history.

The Twelve-Ticket Salute

Disney Armed Forces Salute Paper Vouchers

Normally, the modern Salute allows six promotional tickets.

But extending an existing offer across such a long period raised an obvious problem: Had a family that already used its six tickets exhausted its benefit for the entire 2-year extended promotion?

I was in regular communication by then with the head of Disney Military Sales, who helped clarify how Disney was implementing the rules.

The answer evolved as Disney worked through the extension.

Ultimately, eligible families could purchase as many as 12 Salute tickets over the life of the extended promotion, subject to restrictions on how many could be activated and used at once.

These are the sorts of details that rarely survive in a press release.

They mattered enormously, however, to a military family with six children trying to take everyone to Walt Disney World.

And those real-world questions became a major part of what Military Disney Tips did during this period: military families would encounter a situation that didn’t fit neatly into the published rules, I would take the question to Disney, and we would try to determine how the benefit was actually supposed to work.

2012: The Salute Begins to Look More Permanent

By 2012, the Salute was starting to settle into a more recognizable rhythm.

The 2012–2013 offer ran from 1 October 2012 through 28 September 2013.

Walt Disney World offered four-day promotional tickets, while Disneyland offered three-day Park Hopper tickets. The familiar resort discounts continued as well.

The dates weren’t arbitrary.

Disney had begun aligning the Salute with its corporate fiscal year, which ends on the Saturday closest to 30 September rather than following the federal government’s 1 October–30 September fiscal year exactly.

For several years, that became the rhythm of the program.

But there was still an annual period of uncertainty while military families waited to learn whether Disney would renew it.

That uncertainty was becoming increasingly difficult as Disney vacation planning changed.

An Inside Line to Disney

My relationship with Disney also changed during this period.

At Disney’s Heroes Work Here event in 2012, I met Disney executives including Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton. By that point, Disney was familiar with Military Disney Tips, and I was directed to Walt Disney World Media Relations as my primary contact for military-offer issues.

For the next several years, my contact at Media Relations became an invaluable source of information.

In those early years, I would receive Salute information before the public announcement, with instructions about when I could publish it. Other times, I brought problems that MDT readers were experiencing in the parks or at the ticket offices directly to my Disney contact. One such issue was getting an exception for immediate families larger than the normal 6-ticket allotment.

That didn’t mean Military Disney Tips was making Disney’s policies. Disney was.

But it gave me a rare opportunity to see the gap that sometimes existed between the language of a promotional offer and what military families encountered when they actually tried to use it.

And occasionally, it gave military families a way to get a problem in front of someone at Disney who could fix it.

That distinction—between Disney’s published rule and Disney’s actual implementation of the rule—is an important part of Armed Forces Salute history.

The Planning Problem Gets Bigger

As Walt Disney World moved toward MyMagic+ and FastPass+, the timing of Salute announcements became much more consequential.

In the earlier years, a family could wait for Disney to announce the military tickets and still plan a perfectly good vacation.

Now Disney was encouraging guests to make important decisions well in advance.

Military families were increasingly being asked to plan a Disney vacation before they knew whether the deeply discounted tickets they were counting on would even exist.

I raised that problem repeatedly with Disney.

It wasn’t simply, When will Disney announce the discount?

The real question was:

How can a military family plan on Disney’s timetable if Disney won’t tell them whether their military benefit will exist?

That tension helped define the middle years of the modern Salute.

2015: Solving the Calendar Problem

The fiscal-year structure eventually created another practical problem.

The announcement for the upcoming October offer was not typically announced until late July or August, putting military families behind the general public for FastPass planning.

Military families were caught in the middle.

So, in the summer of 2015, Disney decided to switch from Disney fiscal-year offer periods to a calendar-year offer period.

The 2014-2015 Salute would end at the end of September 2015, but the new calendar-year 2016 Salute wouldn’t be starting until 1 January 2016. So Disney created an unusual bridge that extended the 2014-2015 Salute through Christmas 2015.

At the time I queried Disney, “But what if a military family has already used their 6 allotted tickets and wants to go in November?”

I raised the problem with Disney, and Disney subsequently adopted another 12-ticket limit for the extended offer period.

More importantly, Disney was about to solve the underlying problem.

In January 2016, Disney officially switched to year-long calendar-year offers with the start of the 2016 Armed Forces Salute.

The 2016 offer ran from 3 January through 19 December.

For military families, that was much easier to understand and much easier to plan around. It seemed like a big win, but things were to change.

Eligibility Expands

The modern Salute had already taken a major step in 2009 when Disney included military retirees.

Other eligibility questions continued to arise.

One involved members of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and NOAA.

These uniformed services frequently fall into awkward territory with military discounts because they are a very small pair of uniformed services but aren’t part of the Armed Forces.

After questions and advocacy involving Military Disney Tips and others, Disney added qualifying Public Health Service and NOAA members to the Salute in January 2016.

Again, I wouldn’t claim that Military Disney Tips single-handedly caused Disney to change its policy.

What I can say is that we were part of the conversation, carried the issue to Disney, and then watched Disney expand the benefit.

Planning Issues Resurface

With the switch to calendar-year Salute offers in 2015, military families now had 5 months from the Salute announcement date until the earliest they could use the offer. This was plenty of time to make plans and then FastPass+ reservations.

But Disney complicated it again in 2016.

Starting with the announcement of the 2017 Disney Armed Forces Salute, Disney moved the announcements from late July to late September, giving military families only 3 months for planning and FastPass+.

After the COVID closures, it got even worse, with announcements not coming until late October to mid-November. By then, Disney vacation planning had changed again, but the underlying problem remained: military families planning early-January trips were still being asked to make important vacation decisions before they knew the details of the next Armed Forces Salute.

Salute Year

Announcement Date

Approximate Lead Time

2022 Walt Disney World

15 November 2021

About 6 weeks

2023 Walt Disney World & Disneyland

15 November 2022

About 7 weeks

2024 Walt Disney World

24 October 2023

About 10 weeks

2024 Disneyland

14 November 2023

About 8 weeks

2025 Walt Disney World

23 October 2024

About 10 weeks

2025 Disneyland

14 November 2024

About 7 weeks

2026 Walt Disney World

11 November 2025

About 7 weeks

2026 Disneyland

18 November 2025

About 8 weeks

The Mature Pre-COVID Salute

By the late 2010s, the Armed Forces Salute had become remarkably stable.

Military families could reasonably expect deeply discounted tickets at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland each year.

At Walt Disney World, the resort discount had also settled into a familiar pattern for many years:

30 percent off Value Resorts

35 percent off Moderate Resorts

40 percent off Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villas

Disneyland had its own ticket prices, rules, and resort discounts.

30 percent off the Paradise Pier Hotel

35 percent off The Disneyland Hotel

40 percent off the Grand Californian Resort and Spa

The two coasts shared the Armed Forces Salute name, but they weren’t identical programs.

In 2017, Disney added another valuable benefit: discounted military access to its photo products—Memory Maker at Walt Disney World and PhotoPass Collection at Disneyland.

Some restrictions also eased. Walt Disney World’s spring ticket blockout disappeared in 2017.

Then, in 2018, Disney briefly experimented with extending Salute eligibility to certain Department of Defense civilians and contractors in the last quarter of the year.

That experiment didn’t last.

By 2019, however, the basic Salute had become so predictable that it was easy to forget how temporary the offer had once seemed.

Then came 2020.

COVID Broke the Armed Forces Salute Calendar

The original 2020 Armed Forces Salute looked like another normal year.

Disney announced it in September 2019. Some had already used part of their tickets. Military ticket offices stopped selling tickets, and Shades of Green closed.

Disney introduced the Theme Park reservation system when Walt Disney World reopened; simply possessing a Salute ticket no longer guaranteed that a military family could enter the park it wanted on a particular day.

Disney eventually extended unused 2020 Walt Disney World Salute tickets through 26 September 2021. Disneyland tickets received their own extended expiration.

But the transition was messy.

At one point in September 2020, a Disney processing problem accidentally voided roughly 200 to 300 military tickets, based on the information I received at the time. Prices rose, ticket lengths changed, and blockout dates varied, but the basic structure was familiar.

The six-day Walt Disney World ticket returned for 2024.

There was another important change occurring on the resort side.

The old 30/35/40-percent Walt Disney World military room-discount structure had already begun giving way to “up to” discounts and more variable availability. By the mid-2020s, military resort pricing was increasingly dependent on resort, room type, and travel dates.

That’s another reminder that the Armed Forces Salute isn’t really one offer.

It’s better understood as several related military benefits operating under one familiar name.

Walt Disney World tickets, Walt Disney World resort rooms, Disneyland tickets, and Disneyland resort rooms.

They can—and do—change independently.

2026: A Very Different Salute Year

And that brings us to 2026.

This year is unusual enough that I don’t think we should assume it represents the permanent future of the Armed Forces Salute.

Disney retained the familiar four-, five-, and six-day Walt Disney World military promotional tickets.

But it also introduced something completely new for America’s 250th anniversary: the Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket.

For $499, eligible military guests could purchase a Park Hopper ticket allowing repeated visits during most of 2026, subject to blockout dates.

It isn’t an Annual Pass.

But it is unlike any previous Armed Forces Salute ticket.

Disneyland’s 2026 Salute evolved separately, including a new one-day military ticket and sales through GOVX in addition to military ticket offices.

I view 2026 as a special, experimental Salute year, not necessarily the beginning of a permanent new structure.

Disney tied much of the year’s celebration to the United States’ 250th anniversary. If Disney offers another Armed Forces Salute in 2027, it could build on the 2026 model—or it could look much more like the 2025 Salute.

We’ll have to see.

What the History of the Armed Forces Salute Tells Us

Looking back over more than three decades of Disney military offers, what strikes me most is how much the Armed Forces Salute has evolved.

The 1991 Desert Storm ticket was a temporary gesture.

The 2002 and 2003 Salutes responded to another extraordinary period for both the military and the travel industry.

The modern Salute returned during the 2009 economic downturn.

But something different happened that time.

It stayed.

Disney gradually turned an occasional promotion into a benefit that military families began incorporating into their vacation planning year after year.

The free military-member ticket disappeared. Retirees became eligible. The six-ticket model emerged. The calendar changed. Eligibility expanded. Blockouts came and went. Ticket lengths and prices changed. Disney added photo discounts. COVID shattered the normal cycle, and Disney rebuilt it.

Through all of that, one thing has remained constant:

The Disney Armed Forces Salute is still a special promotional offer, not a permanent military entitlement.

Disney has never guaranteed that next year’s Salute will look like this year’s—or that there will be a next year’s Salute at all.

That’s why I still pay close attention every time Disney announces it.

I’ve watched this benefit go from something military families hoped might be extended for another month to something generations of military families now assume will be waiting for them next year.

I don’t take that for granted.

And after using Disney’s military offer myself in 1991, documenting the modern Salute since its return in 2009, and spending years helping military families understand and use it, I don’t think I’ll ever see a new Armed Forces Salute announcement as just another Disney discount.

It’s a remarkable little piece of Disney—and military-family—history.

How About You?

What has the Disney Armed Forces Salute meant over the years for your family?
