They can eat while everyone is getting dressed and preparing to leave.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not trying to reproduce a restaurant breakfast in the room.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re trying to get two kids fed without adding another stop before we begin the day.<\/p>\n<p>The same idea works with yogurt, fruit, muffins, pastries, breakfast bars, individual cereal containers, or whatever your family will actually eat.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be mornings when buying breakfast makes more sense. Perhaps a Character Breakfast!<\/p>\n<p>Express Caf\u00e9 is particularly convenient because it is near the Shades of Green bus area. If everyone wants a hot breakfast sandwich or you simply don&#8217;t want to deal with food in the room that morning, buying breakfast on the way out can be worth the money.<\/p>\n<p>Garden Gallery&#8217;s breakfast buffet is an entirely different experience and can make sense when breakfast itself is part of the morning.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage of stocking breakfast food isn&#8217;t that you must eat in the room every morning.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s that you have the option.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Snacks_and_Park_Food_Are_the_Other_Easy_Win\"><\/span>Snacks and Park Food Are the Other Easy Win<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is the other category where a little planning can save money without asking much from the vacation.<\/p>\n<p>We normally order kid snacks, chips, and Uncrustables along with our breakfast groceries. The snacks can stay in the room or go into the park bag, and the Uncrustables give the girls something familiar to eat without requiring us to buy a full meal every time somebody gets hungry.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re taking food with you, remember to order or pack what you need to carry it.<\/p>\n<p>Something as simple as sandwich bags can be easy to overlook when you&#8217;re placing a grocery order from a hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>You also don&#8217;t need to take this idea to extremes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 2px solid #2f5d3a; background-color: #f8f1df; padding: 18px; border-radius: 12px; margin: 24px 0;\">\n<p><strong>Steve Says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Years ago, I entered EPCOT behind a family of four carrying two enormous stuffed backpacks. When they reached the old bag check, food just kept coming out.<\/p>\n<p>There were full-size food-storage containers, prepared dishes, and then, to my amazement, an entire roast chicken with more fixings.<\/p>\n<p>They had essentially packed a family meal into two backpacks.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s probably taking &#8220;bring your own food to Disney&#8221; a little farther than I would recommend.<\/p>\n<p>A few kid snacks, Uncrustables, or a couple of sandwiches? Absolutely reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Catering your own EPCOT dinner out of a backpack? At some point the savings become a logistics exercise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Disney currently allows guests to bring outside food and nonalcoholic drinks into the theme parks for personal consumption, provided the food does not require heating, reheating, processing, refrigeration, or temperature control. Shades of Green to make those sandwiches is a different matter.<\/p>\n<p>A trip between Shades of Green and a theme park involves transportation, walking, and time.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/shades-of-green\/the-transportation-and-ticket-center-reality-for-shades-of-green-guests\/\">Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, it also involves the Transportation and Ticket Center<\/a> as part of the Shades of Green transportation process.<\/p>\n<p>So a family that leaves a park solely to save money on lunch may give up considerably more vacation time than the lunch savings are worth.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s different from a family that was already returning to the room.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re heading back for naps, pool time, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disney-tips\/walt-disney-world-mid-day-breaks-why-they-matter-and-how-to-plan-them-right\/\">midday break<\/a> anyway, eating something inexpensive in the room can fit naturally into the day.<\/p>\n<p>If everyone is having a great time in the park and the only reason you&#8217;re leaving is that there is sandwich meat in the mini fridge, I wouldn&#8217;t let the groceries dictate the vacation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cold_Meals_Work_Better_Than_They_Sound\"><\/span>Cold Meals Work Better Than They Sound<span especially helpful on arrival day, during an afternoon break, or when one family member wants something simple while everyone else is relaxing.<\/p>\n<p>The important part is keeping the meal simple.<\/p>\n<p>Once you need extensive preparation, multiple refrigerated ingredients, or a pile of equipment and disposable supplies, you start recreating the kitchen problem.<\/p>\n<p>A cold meal that takes five minutes and uses food you were already going to buy can be useful.<\/p>\n<p>A hotel-room culinary project probably isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/shades-of-green\/a-disney-mid-day-break-time-to-use-shades-of-greens-laundry-rooms\/\">Palm and Magnolia Wing laundry rooms<\/a> and at Express Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never actually used one, though.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is simple: <strong>the walk with the food seems like too much trouble.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think through the entire process rather than simply seeing &#8220;microwave available&#8221; on an amenities list.<\/p>\n<p>You carry the cold food from your room to the microwave.<\/p>\n<p>You heat it.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re feeding several people, you may need to heat several containers separately.<\/p>\n<p>Then you have to carry everything back while it&#8217;s hot.<\/p>\n<p>How many hot meal containers can one person comfortably carry?<\/p>\n<p>Even if you can safely manage two or three covered containers, feeding a family of four or five can quickly require another adult, another trip, or some creative juggling.<\/p>\n<p>And the first meal you heated may already be cooling while you&#8217;re heating the last one.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean the microwaves are useless.<\/p>\n<p>They can be very handy if one person wants soup, leftovers, oatmeal, or one microwave meal.<\/p>\n<p>I just wouldn&#8217;t build a family&#8217;s dinner strategy around making repeated trips to one.<\/p>\n<h2><span dining options<\/a> include reasonably priced takeout choices from Garden Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The current menu includes pizzas, sandwiches, children&#8217;s meals, and family-size options. Room delivery is also available for a small delivery charge.<\/p>\n<p>A frozen grocery-store dinner may still cost less.<\/p>\n<p>But if feeding the family means walking several frozen meals to a laundry room, waiting while they heat, and carrying hot containers back to the room, I would start comparing that effort with simply picking up a pizza or having an inexpensive meal delivered.<\/p>\n<p>This is the point where saving money on paper can become false economy on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes paying a little more buys back enough time and effort that it is the better value.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_a_Realistic_Six-Night_Family_Setup_Could_Look_Like\"><\/span>What a Realistic Six-Night Family Setup Could Look Like<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I would not try to buy six nights&#8217; worth of meals.<\/p>\n<p>For a family with children, I would think about the trip more like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Initial grocery delivery:<\/strong> Cereal, milk, kid breakfast foods, favorite snacks, Uncrustables or other simple park foods, fruit if your family will eat it, chips, limited sandwich supplies if you know you&#8217;ll use them, sandwich bags, and possibly bottled water<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exchange restocking:<\/strong> Bottled water, milk, drinks, snacks, and other basics you run through faster than expected<\/li>\n<li><strong>In-room eating:<\/strong> Breakfasts, snacks, simple cold food, and perhaps an occasional light lunch during a planned resort break<\/li>\n<li><strong>Park bag:<\/strong> Kid snacks and a modest amount of easy-to-carry food rather than trying to pack full family meals<\/li>\n<li><strong>Buy prepared:<\/strong> Most dinners and most park-day lunches, especially when getting back to the room or using a communal microwave would create more trouble than the savings justify<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We normally have a case or two of bottled water delivered on Disney Resort stays because buying individual bottles around Walt Disney World adds up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>At Shades of Green, I would look at that a little differently.<\/p>\n<p>The Exchange sells cases of water at much more reasonable prices than Disney resort shops. If you&#8217;re already placing a grocery order, adding water can still be convenient.<\/p>\n<p>But if water and a few snacks are all you need, I wouldn&#8217;t arrange a grocery delivery solely to avoid walking to the Exchange.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_I_Wouldnt_Bother_With\"><\/span>What I Wouldn&#8217;t Bother With<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t bring cooking appliances that Shades of Green doesn&#8217;t permit.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t fill the mini fridge with six days of complicated meals.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t plan on repeatedly leaving a theme park just because food is waiting back in the room.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t make several family microwave dinners a central part of the plan unless I had a specific reason.<\/p>\n<p>And I wouldn&#8217;t order a huge quantity of groceries simply because groceries are cheaper than restaurant food.<\/p>\n<p>Unused food isn&#8217;t a savings.<\/p>\n<p>Neither is buying disposable plates, bowls, utensils, storage containers, condiments, and other supplies for meals you ultimately decide are too inconvenient to make.<\/p>\n<p>The best grocery order is usually smaller than the one that looks impressive in your shopping cart.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 2px solid #2f5d3a; background-color: #f8f1df; padding: 18px; border-radius: 12px; margin: 24px 0;\">\n<p><strong>Steve Says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s common to see departing Shades of Green guests leave unopened nonperishable food and vacation items in the laundry rooms for others to use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Food_to_Make_the_Vacation_Easier\"><\/span>Use Food to Make the Vacation Easier<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Shades of Green room can support much more in-room food than the lack of a kitchen might make you think.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast is easy.<\/p>\n<p>Snacks are easy.<\/p>\n<p>Drinks are easy.<\/p>\n<p>Simple cold food can work very well.<\/p>\n<p>The Exchange makes restocking convenient, while grocery delivery gives families a much larger selection for the initial setup.<\/p>\n<p>But I would resist the temptation to measure success by how many restaurant meals you eliminate.<\/p>\n<p>If returning to the room costs an hour of your park day, the sandwich isn&#8217;t really free.<\/p>\n<p>If heating dinner requires carrying food across the resort and making multiple trips, the microwave meal isn&#8217;t as convenient as it looked in the grocery app.<\/p>\n<p>And if a reasonably priced Garden Gallery takeout meal lets everyone sit down and eat without turning dinner into a project, spending a little more may be the smarter choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feed the family in the room when doing so saves money and makes the vacation easier.
