military&#8217;s Shades of Green, the resort was operated by Disney as the Disney Inn, and you will still sometimes hear people compare it to today&#8217;s Disney Deluxe Resorts because of its large rooms, location, pools, and overall scale.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think that comparison fits particularly well.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, calling Shades of Green equivalent to a standard Disney Moderate also undersells some of its strengths.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve often described Shades of Green as a <strong>Moderate Plus<\/strong>, and I still think that is the best shorthand.<\/p>\n<p>Its rooms are significantly larger than Disney Moderate rooms; it has substantial resort amenities, and it offers military families some benefits no Disney resort can duplicate.<\/p>\n<p>But when I look at the overall guest experience today\u2014dining, transportation, theming, service, recreation, and the resort itself\u2014a Disney Moderate is a much closer comparison than a Disney Deluxe.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #eef5fa; border-left: 6px solid #2f6f9f; padding: 16px; margin: 20px 0;\"><strong>STEVE SAYS:<\/strong> Think of Shades of Green as a Moderate Plus rather than a Deluxe Minus. It exceeds a typical Moderate in some important areas, especially room size and military value, but the overall resort experience is not equivalent to Disney&#8217;s Deluxe category.<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Part of the problem with comparing Shades of Green to Disney resorts is that it was not designed around Disney&#8217;s current Value, Moderate, and of Green has its own mix of strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>It has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very large standard rooms<\/li>\n<li>Two pools and a children&#8217;s splash area<\/li>\n<li>A fitness center<\/li>\n<li>Several dining locations<\/li>\n<li>An Exchange<\/li>\n<li>A military ticket office<\/li>\n<li>A children&#8217;s play area<\/li>\n<li>A spa<\/li>\n<li>A quiet golf-course setting<\/li>\n<li>A good location near Magic Kingdom<\/li>\n<li>Military-specific pricing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But that doesn&#8217;t automatically make it Deluxe.<\/p>\n<p>Disney&#8217;s resort categories are about much more than room size.<\/p>\n<p>A Disney Deluxe Resort usually combines strong theming, more sophisticated dining, greater service depth, distinctive public spaces, and\u2014at many resorts\u2014exceptional park access or transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green has some Deluxe-like advantages, but it doesn&#8217;t consistently deliver the whole Deluxe package.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is probably the single biggest area where Shades of Green beats the Disney Moderate category.<\/p>\n<p>The two Shades of Green wings have different family moving from a Palm Wing room at Shades of Green to a typical Disney Moderate room is giving up roughly one-third of its room space.<\/p>\n<p>Even a standard room in Gran Destino Tower at Disney&#8217;s Coronado Springs Resort, which is larger than a typical Moderate room, is still noticeably smaller than either Shades of Green wing.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green&#8217;s rooms also sleep five plus a crib, which makes that extra space particularly useful for military families traveling with children.<\/p>\n<p>So while I consider Moderate the closest overall Disney category, <strong>Disney Moderate rooms are not a room-size equivalent to Shades of Green<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Disney_Value_Resorts_Are_Too_Much_of_a_Step_Down\"><\/span>Why Disney Value Resorts Are Too Much of a Step Down<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Disney Value Resorts can absolutely be the right choice for a military family.<\/p>\n<p>They are often the least expensive way to stay in a Disney-owned resort, and Pop Century and Art of Animation in particular have the transportation advantage of the Disney Skyliner.<\/p>\n<p>But if the question is which category provides the closest <strong>alternative experience<\/strong> to Shades of Green, Value is too much of a step down.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with Shades of Green, Disney Values offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smaller rooms<\/li>\n<li>More limited dining<\/li>\n<li>Fewer resort-style amenities<\/li>\n<li>A busier and more energetic atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>Less of the quiet retreat feeling you get at Shades of Green<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Value Resort may be a good <strong>budget alternative<\/strong> to Shades of Green.<\/p>\n<p>It just isn&#8217;t the closest experiential alternative.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_I_Dont_Consider_Shades_of_Green_a_Disney_Deluxe_Equivalent\"><\/span>Why I Don&#8217;t Consider Shades of Green a Disney Deluxe Equivalent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Shades of Green&#8217;s location and room size can still feel Deluxe-like.<\/p>\n<p>Disney Deluxe Resorts offer much more than large rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Even Disney&#8217;s less expensive Deluxe Resorts, such as Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge, deliver a complete Deluxe-level resort experience through immersive design, restaurants and lounges, elaborate public spaces, recreation, and a strong sense that the resort itself is part of the vacation.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/walt-disney-world-resorts\/magic-kingdom-resort-area-hotels-best-disney-world-resorts-near-magic-kingdom\/\">monorail<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/walt-disney-world-resorts\/epcot-resort-area-hotels-best-disney-world-resorts-near-epcot\/\">EPCOT-area<\/a> Deluxe Resorts, transportation and location can become major parts of the experience as well.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green simply doesn&#8217;t compete at that level across enough categories for me to call it a Deluxe equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean Shades of Green is a lesser choice.<\/p>\n<p>It means it is a different type of resort.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" options.<\/p>\n<p>That is a respectable selection.<\/p>\n<p>But the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/shades-of-green\/dining-options-at-shades-of-green-disney-worlds-military-resort\/\">dining locations<\/a> doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>The culinary experience at Shades of Green is much more functional than what you find at Disney&#8217;s Deluxe Resorts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Disney-Resort-Activities-Fine-Dining.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40680 size-full\" better resort restaurants have their own culinary identities, dedicated menus, lounges, specialty kitchens, baking and pastry programs, and food and beverage operations designed to make dining part of the resort experience.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green&#8217;s dining is primarily there to feed resort guests conveniently.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction becomes especially noticeable at table-service restaurants and with items such as baked goods and desserts, where Disney&#8217;s culinary operation is simply operating at another level.<\/p>\n<p>And today, you don&#8217;t even have to move up to Deluxe to find a significantly stronger dining program.<\/p>\n<p>Disney&#8217;s Coronado Springs Resort is still a Moderate, but it offers restaurants and lounges such as Toledo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disney-dining\/three-bridges-bar-grill-review-why-we-ate-there-3-times-in-4-nights\/\">Three Bridges<\/a>, Maya Grill, Dahlia Lounge, Rix Sports Bar, and Barcelona Lounge.<\/p>\n<p>That is much closer to the type of dining depth people often associate with a Deluxe Resort.<\/p>\n<p>So if dining matters to you, the idea that Shades of Green is basically a Deluxe resort at military prices becomes especially hard to defend.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" Transportation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Shades of Green is in an excellent physical location.<\/p>\n<p>It sits near the Polynesian, between two of Disney&#8217;s golf courses, and close to Magic Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But location and transportation convenience are not the same thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green relies on its own scheduled buses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Shades-of-Green-Bus.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18055\" Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Magic Kingdom requires transferring to the Monorail or Ferryboat<\/li>\n<li>EPCOT requires transferring to the EPCOT Monorail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That makes those two park trips less convenient than they appear when you simply look at Shades of Green on a map.<\/p>\n<p>Disney&#8217;s own resort buses, by comparison, use bus stops much closer to the park entrances.<\/p>\n<p>That matters when comparing Shades of Green to Coronado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Both resorts are effectively bus-only for theme park transportation, but the experience is different.<\/p>\n<p>At Coronado Springs and the other Disney Moderates, Disney buses take you directly to the Disney bus stops, which are closer to the park entrances.<\/p>\n<p>Transportation is another big reason I would not equate Shades of Green with Disney Deluxe-level resorts\u2014and in this particular category, it can even fall short of the Disney Moderates.<\/p>\n<h2><span href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disney-resorts\/soaring-to-the-magic-a-look-at-the-disney-world-skyliner-resorts\/\">Disney Skyliner<\/a>, giving guests direct gondola transportation toward EPCOT and Disney&#8217;s Hollywood Studios.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disney&#8217;s Port Orleans Resort &#8211; Riverside<\/strong> and <strong>Port Orleans Resort &#8211; French Quarter<\/strong> have boat transportation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/walt-disney-worlds-disney-springs\/\">Disney Springs<\/a> in addition to buses.<\/p>\n<p>So while Shades of Green has the better geographic location on paper, Disney Moderates provide a more convenient transportation experience depending on where you are going.<\/p>\n<h2><span two pools, a splash area, a playground, fitness and spa facilities, golf nearby, and plenty of open space.<\/p>\n<p>It also has something that is harder to quantify: <strong>quiet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green feels removed from the intensity of the theme parks.<\/p>\n<p>That is one of the things I have always liked about it.<\/p>\n<p>Disney Moderates tend to provide a similar sense of being at a real resort rather than simply having a hotel room near the parks.<\/p>\n<p>That is another reason I think Moderate is the right comparison as an Armed Forces Recreation Center.<\/p>\n<p>The experience is generally practical, friendly, and functional.<\/p>\n<p>Disney Deluxe Resorts operate with a different service expectation.<\/p>\n<p>That can show up in housekeeping, food and beverage operations, concierge-style assistance, public spaces, and the overall level of polish throughout the resort.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this does not mean Shades of Green provides bad service.<\/p>\n<p>It means the resort is serving a different mission.<\/p>\n<p>A Moderate comparison acknowledges that without pretending Shades of Springs has several qualities that translate well for Shades of Green guests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A more adult-oriented atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>A large, spread-out resort setting<\/li>\n<li>Extensive dining and lounge choices<\/li>\n<li>A substantial convention-resort feel<\/li>\n<li>A more polished hotel experience in Gran Destino Tower<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I mentioned, like Shades of Green, Coronado Springs relies on buses for theme park transportation.<\/p>\n<p>But Disney&#8217;s buses take guests directly to closer theme park bus stops. Riverside<\/strong><\/a> deserves a serious look.<\/p>\n<p>Riverside has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extensive landscaped grounds<\/li>\n<li>A quiet, mature atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>A main feature pool and multiple leisure pools<\/li>\n<li>Recreation throughout the resort<\/li>\n<li>Boat transportation to Disney Springs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It has the same kind of &#8220;come back from the parks and decompress&#8221; Shades of Green wins easily<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Moving_Up_to_a_Deluxe_Resort_May_Make_More_Sense\"><\/span>When Moving Up to a Deluxe Resort May Make More Sense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are times when Moderate may not be what you really want.<\/p>\n<p>If you are leaving Shades of Green because you want an actual <strong>upgrade<\/strong> rather than the closest equivalent, then a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarydisneytips.com\/blog\/disney-military-discounts\/shades-of-green-disney-deluxe-resort-comparison\/\">Disney Deluxe<\/a> may be worth considering.<\/p>\n<p>That is especially true if your priorities are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-quality resort dining<\/li>\n<li>Immersive theming<\/li>\n<li>Walking access to a theme park<\/li>\n<li>Monorail or boat transportation<\/li>\n<li>More polished resort service<\/li>\n<li>A resort that is a major part of the vacation itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In that case, I would not think of Deluxe as the equivalent of Shades of Green.<\/p>\n<p>I would think of it as the <strong>next level up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_Forget_the_One_Thing_Disney_Cant_Replicate\"><\/span>Don&#8217;t Forget the One Thing Disney Can&#8217;t Replicate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is one area where none of Disney&#8217;s resort categories can truly replace Shades of Green:\u00a0<b>Its<\/b><strong>\u00a0military identity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is one area where none of Disney&#8217;s resort categories can truly replace Shades of Green: <strong>its military identity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green gives military families access to military ticket services, the Exchange, military-specific pricing, and an environment filled with other service members, retirees, veterans, and military families.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So when I call a Disney Moderate the closest alternative, I am talking about the <strong>resort experience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I am not suggesting that a Disney Moderate can replace everything that makes Shades of Green unique.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bottom_Line\"><\/span>Bottom Line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you normally stay at Shades of Green and want the closest Disney-owned alternative, <strong>start with Disney&#8217;s Moderate Resorts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of Green has much larger rooms than a typical Moderate, an excellent location, strong recreation, and unique military benefits.<\/p>\n<p>But its overall dining, transportation, theming, service level, and resort experience are not equivalent to what Disney offers at its Deluxe Resorts.<\/p>\n<p>That is why I still think <strong>Moderate Plus<\/strong> is the best way to describe Shades of Green.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Disney Moderates, <strong>Coronado Springs is probably the closest overall alternative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But the best choice depends on what you value most:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose Coronado Springs for the strongest overall resort experience<\/li>\n<li>Choose Port Orleans Riverside for quiet and atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>Choose Caribbean Beach for transportation<\/li>\n<li>Choose Port Orleans French Quarter for a smaller, easier-to-navigate resort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And if what you really want is something noticeably better than Shades of Green rather than something similar, that is when I would start looking at Disney&#8217;s Deluxe Resorts.<\/p>\n\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Short Answer: Start With Disney&#8217;s Moderate Resorts If you normally stay at Shades of Green and are looking for the closest Disney-owned alternative, I would start with the Disney Moderate Resorts.
