Spaceship Earth, the iconic geodesic sphere that serves as the centerpiece of EPCOT, is not just an architectural wonder; it’s also home to one of Disney’s most beloved attractions.

Let’s look into the attraction itself and all of the historical goodies wrapped around it!

📍 EPCOT | World Celebration

Spaceship Earth is located in EPCOT’s World Celebration, that can be seen from everywhere in the park. Many of the uninitiated call it the golf ball.

Ride Experience

Printing Press

As you enter the sphere and board your ride vehicle, the adventure begins. You’ll find yourself gently ascending through time, passing by lifelike audio-animatronic figures, and scenes depicting key moments in the history of communication. The storytelling is enhanced by a captivating narration provided by iconic actress Dame Judi Dench. It’s a blend of captivating storytelling, cutting-edge technology, and Disney magic that makes Spaceship Earth a favorite among Disney fans.

Radio

Even more, this attraction is a family-friendly attraction, meaning there are no height requirements!

Computers

Important to note:

MDT does want to advise parents of babies or toddlers that while the ride is quite slow, there are some fairly steep inclines and moments that could be a little stressful for parents trying to keep infants and toddlers still in order to enjoy the attraction.

Please also note, also, that Spaceship Earth could be troublesome for those who have difficulty with dark enclosed spaces, and additionally, the scene in Rome adds in the smell of “Rome Burning” that some say smells like burning wood/barbecue like aroma (although some say burning rubber).

Ride Vehicles

Spaceship Earth uses a unique ride system to transport guests through time and history. The ride vehicles are designated as “Time Machines,” which can comfortably accommodate two to four passengers.

These vehicles rotate as you ascend the sphere, ensuring you have an optimal view of each scene. The ride vehicles offer a combination of gentle motion and stunning visuals, making it suitable for guests of all ages.

Then as you descend the vehicles again spin so that you are going down the hill backwards at a steep angle.

Height Requirements

One of the great aspects of Spaceship Earth is its accessibility to guests of all ages and heights. There are no height requirements for this attraction, making it a fantastic option for families and Disney fans of all generations to enjoy together. Whether you’re traveling with small children, teenagers, or adults, everyone can take part in this enlightening and entertaining journey through time.

Rider Swap

Rider Swap is not offered for Spaceship Earth. Since this attraction is a slow-moving journey through time, it’s suitable for most guests, making it a great option for families to experience together.

Accessibility

Guests using wheelchairs or ECVs must transfer to the ride vehicle to enjoy Spaceship Earth. The attraction features an accessible queue, and Cast Members are available to assist with boarding if needed. The queue for this attraction is not very accessible. If you have a family member in an ECV, they will have to transfer to a wheelchair where they will have to be pushed up a steep incline for the queue.

Tips for a Magical Experience

Thank the Phoenicians

  • The best time to experience this ride is at night after the sun has gone down. This is due to the dark nature of the ride. The first scene that you encounter is quite dark and very hard to se when your eyes are adjusted to the brilliant light of central Florida
  • To experience shorter wait times, consider visiting Spaceship Earth later in the day or at night, since this is usually many guest’s first attraction as they enter the park
  • Use Lightning Lane Multi Pass to skip the line
  • Keep an eye out for hidden details and Easter eggs within the scenes; Disney Imagineers have filled the attraction with numerous delightful surprises
  • After the ride, don’t forget to explore the interactive exhibits in Project Tomorrow, a post-show area located at the base of the sphere

The History of Spaceship Earth

Spaceship Earth first opened its doors in 1982 when EPCOT (the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) made its debut at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The attraction is a mesmerizing time-travel experience that explores the history of human communication and technology, all housed within the geodesic sphere designed by renowned architect R. Buckminster Fuller. This innovative ride takes guests on a journey through various historical periods, showcasing how advancements in communication have shaped our world.

In 2000 when EPCOT was renamed EPCOT 2000, Spaceship Earth got a makeover.

After 2000, the 2000 was removed and the hand and wand remained for a few years. See more on the history of EPCOT and its various names on the main EPCOT Page.

Did you know…

  • The sphere that houses Spaceship Earth was designed with the help of Ray Bradbury, the author of the famous dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451
  • Spaceship Earth is made up of 11,324 individual triangles that actually form a water recycling aqueduct that moves rain water to the lagoon
  • There’s actually a room at the top of Spaceship Earth! The original sponsor of the attraction used to use this room for special events. This was also how Mickey Mouse got on top of the giant sphere for the iconic photos for the year 2000
  • It took Imagineers 26 months to build Spaceship Earth, whereas Cinderella Castle took only 18 months!

Spaceship Earth is not just an attraction but a symbol of the boundless human imagination and a testament to Disney’s commitment to storytelling and innovation. It’s a must-visit for any Disney fan, and with no height requirements, it’s an experience the whole family can enjoy together. So, as you step into your Time Machine and embark on this remarkable journey through history, remember that the magic of Disney is woven into every facet of Spaceship Earth.
