Shades of Green Standard Guest Rooms are some of the largest standard rooms at Walt Disney World, and for many military families, they are the main reason the resort works so well.
If you are comparing Shades of Green with Disney resorts, the Standard Room is where the conversation really begins.
The room rate matters. The military eligibility matters. The Ticket Office, pools, transportation, and resort amenities all matter too. But once you arrive, the room itself becomes one of the biggest factors in how comfortable your vacation feels.
Shades of Green Standard Guest Rooms are about 480 square feet and sleep up to five guests, with two queen beds and a single sleeper sofa. Each room also includes either a balcony or patio.
Military Disney Tips Research: Based on nearly a decade of reader surveys, room size is one of the most consistently praised parts of staying at Shades of Green.

Who Should Choose a Standard Room?
For most Shades of Green guests, the Standard Room is the right starting point. It gives you the resort’s biggest room advantage without the limited availability or higher cost of a suite.
Standard Rooms are a good fit for:
- Families of four or five
- Military families planning longer Walt Disney World vacations
- Guests who value space over Disney theming
- Families planning midday breaks
- Travelers who want a balcony or patio
- Guests comparing Shades of Green with Disney Value or Moderate Resorts
- Families who want the best balance of space, price, and availability
You may want something else if you need:
- More than five sleeping spaces
- A separate bedroom
- Multiple bathrooms
- Guaranteed poolside patio access
- A fully Disney-themed resort room
- Direct Disney transportation from a Disney-owned resort
Steve Says: For most eligible military families, I would start with the Standard Room before looking at anything else. It gives you the room size advantage that makes Shades of Green special, and it is far easier to book than one of the very limited suites.
What Makes the Standard Rooms Different?
The biggest difference is usable space.
At about 480 square feet, Shades of Green Standard Rooms give families more breathing room than many Disney resort rooms. That matters most during the everyday parts of a Disney vacation: unpacking, getting ready, cooling off in the afternoon, charging devices, storing snacks, and winding down after a long park day.
This is where the research lines up with real vacation behavior. Families are not just praising a number on a room chart. They are praising what the extra room lets them do.
During a multi-day Disney trip, that extra space can make the room feel like part of the vacation instead of just a place to sleep.
Room Layout and Sleeping Arrangements
Standard Guest Rooms include two queen beds and a single sleeper sofa. Maximum occupancy is five guests, plus a crib when requested.
That setup works especially well for many military families because it gives a fifth guest a real sleeping option without moving into a suite or booking a second room.
The layout also gives families room to move around the beds, store luggage, and use the table area without feeling immediately crowded.
Planning Tip: Shades of Green offers adjoining rooms, but adjoining rooms are not guaranteed. Make the request when booking, then confirm the request again before arrival.
Bathroom Layouts Are Not All the Same
This is one of the most important details to understand before you book.
Standard Guest Rooms have different bathroom configurations. Palm Wing rooms have a split layout with the toilet and shower in one room and a double-sink vanity area in a separate attached space. Magnolia Wing rooms have a more compact single-room bathroom setup with one sink.
That difference matters for families.
A split bathroom layout makes mornings easier because one person can use the shower or toilet while others use the vanity area. A single-sink bathroom can feel tighter, especially with multiple adults, older kids, or a family of five.
Steve Says: If bathroom layout matters to your family, request the Palm wing with its split bathroom layout with double sinks. It is still a request, not a guarantee, but this is exactly the kind of room request that solves a real planning problem.
Balcony or Patio
Every Standard Guest Room includes either a balcony or patio with chairs and a table.
This is one of those features that sounds small until you use it. A balcony or patio gives you a place to step outside, enjoy the landscaping, let the room breathe a little, or sit with coffee before heading to the parks.
Views vary by room. Some rooms face the Magnolia Golf Course or Palm Golf Course. Others face inward toward resort landscaping or the Magnolia Wing area.
What Is Included in the Room?
Standard Guest Rooms include the basics most families need for a Disney vacation.
- Two queen beds
- Single sleeper sofa
- Balcony or patio
- Mini refrigerator
- Table and chairs
- In-room safe
- Free Wi-Fi
- Coffee maker using coffee pods, not K-Cups
- Hair dryer
- Iron and ironing board
- Bathroom toiletries
Guest rooms do not include microwaves. Microwaves are available in the laundry rooms and at the Express Café.
Wi-Fi is free, but in-room Wi-Fi is not one of Shades of Green’s strengths. If you need reliable internet for work, streaming, or heavy device use, plan accordingly.
What About Room Temperature?
This is one of my biggest personal frustrations with the current Shades of Green room experience.
During my May 2025 stay, the room thermostat could not be set below 68 degrees. The bigger issue was the motion sensor. When the thermostat did not detect motion for a period of time, it reset the room temperature to 76 degrees.
That happened while I was out of the room, and worse, it happened while I was sleeping.
Steve Says: I love many things about Shades of Green, but the motion-sensor thermostat system is a real concern for guests who sleep hot or want a consistently cool room after long summer park days. If room temperature is a major comfort issue for you, factor that into your decision before booking.

What About Cleanliness?
Reader ratings for room cleanliness are strong overall, but my own May 2025 stay raised a concern with hard-surface floor cleaning.
Hard-surface flooring can be cleaner than carpet when it is properly maintained. But it must be wet-mopped between guests. During my stay, the floor looked clean, but after walking barefoot while packing, my feet were dirty enough that I wiped them with a wet washcloth before putting on socks and shoes.
Steve Says: I would not tell readers to avoid Shades of Green because of this, but I would tell you to bring socks or slippers for the room. That is practical advice, not a deal-breaker for most families.
Which Wing Should You Request?
Standard Rooms are located in both the Magnolia Wing and Palm Wing. The best choice depends on what you want to be closer to.
Magnolia Wing
The Magnolia Wing is the original guest room wing. It has both pools and Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill outside the doors. All Poolside Rooms are located in this wing. Standard and Poolview Rooms in the Magnolia Wing have a traditional single-room bathroom with one sink. If bathroom space isn’t a major priority and you’d rather be closer to the pools, this wing is still an excellent choice.
The Magnolia Wing has 301 rooms arranged in a compact, squared-off Y layout. That matters because even the farther rooms do not feel as far away as they would in one long straight hallway.
Palm Wing
The Palm Wing was added during the 2002–2004 expansion and is attached to the parking structure. Standard Rooms in the Palm Wing have a split bathroom layout with a separate double-sink vanity. Many families prefer this setup because several people can get ready at the same time.
The Palm Wing has 285 rooms arranged in a stretched T-shaped layout. The parking garage entrance is near the short base of the T, while some rooms extend much farther down the longer hallways. If you are assigned near the far end, that walk feels longer after a full park day.
Steve Says: Do not request a wing just because someone online says it is “best.” Request a wing because it solves a problem. Pool access, parking access, walking distance, mobility needs, and daily routine matter more than a generic best-room recommendation.
Should You Choose a Standard Room, Poolside Room, or Suite?
For most guests, a Standard Room is the best starting point. Poolside Rooms and Suites solve more specific planning needs.
Choose a Standard Room if you want:
- Best overall balance of space and price
- Room for up to five guests
- More availability than suites
- Balcony or patio
- Lower cost than Poolside Rooms
Choose a Poolside Room if you want:
- Direct first-floor patio access near the pools
- Easy pool breaks with younger children
- A more resort-focused stay
- Magnolia Wing location
Choose a Suite if you need:
- More sleeping capacity
- Separate bedroom space
- Additional bathroom space
- Multi-generational family space
- Large-family accommodations

My Room Recommendation
If you asked me which room to reserve without giving me any other information, I’d recommend a Standard Room.
It gives you the biggest advantage that Shades of Green offers—space—without the limited availability of a suite or the premium of a Poolside Room. Unless you have a specific reason to choose another room type, this is where I would start.
Bottom Line
Shades of Green Standard Guest Rooms are the room type most military families should consider first.
They are large, practical, and well suited for families who need space during a busy Walt Disney World vacation. The rooms are not perfect. The thermostat system, bathroom layout differences, Wi-Fi, charging access, and lack of in-room microwaves are all worth knowing before you arrive.
But if your family values room size, functionality, and military resort value over Disney theming, the Standard Rooms are one of the strongest reasons to stay at Shades of Green.

Steve: It’s been nearly 6 years since we’ve communicated, but I will be making the trek from Green Bay to SoG/WDW in June 2022; our grandson age 17 will be at the DHS Disney Performing Arts OnStage supporting a recording session with his high school music ensemble – he’s Orchestra.
If there’s ONE thing I’ve learned in my previous 4 trips to SoG/WDW, don’t go without first reading every page of Military Disney Tips. Your sage advice and direction has been a true blessing. I just purchased your SoG Essential Guide and will read every word, again, and I still have my older copy.
We’ve never met, but when it comes to WDW, it feels like you are my best friend; your service to your country is always appreciated, but your “service” to your fellow “lifers” is priceless!
