The pools are one of the best parts of staying at Shades of Green
Shades of Green has two heated outdoor pools: the Mill Pond Pool and the Magnolia Pool.
Both pools are located near the Magnolia Wing, but they offer very different experiences. The Mill Pond Pool is the resort’s main family pool, with the waterslide, kids’ splash area, playground, and Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill nearby. The Magnolia Pool is the quieter pool area, with a more relaxed atmosphere and the resort’s hot tub.
After years of collecting survey responses from military families, the pools consistently rank among the strongest parts of the Shades of Green resort experience.
The real question is not which pool is better.
The better question is: Which pool is better for your family?
Which Shades of Green Pool Is Right for You?
The two pool areas serve different vacation styles. Use this quick guide to decide where your family is most likely to spend time.
| If You Want… | Choose… |
|---|---|
| Waterslide | Mill Pond Pool |
| Kids’ splash area | Mill Pond Pool |
| Playground nearby | Mill Pond Pool |
| Lunch at Evergreens | Mill Pond Pool |
| Main family pool atmosphere | Mill Pond Pool |
| Quieter pool time | Magnolia Pool |
| Hot tub | Magnolia Pool |
| Less activity | Magnolia Pool |
| Relaxing with a book | Magnolia Pool |
| Calmer Poolside Room setting | Magnolia Pool |
Steve Recommends: If this is your family’s first stay at Shades of Green, start at the Mill Pond Pool. It is the resort’s main activity pool, with the waterslide, splash area, playground, and Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill all nearby. Later in your stay, spend some time at the Magnolia Pool to experience the quieter side of the resort.
Shades of Green Pool Ratings
Military Disney Tips readers rate the pools very highly in the ongoing Shades of Green guest surveys.
The ratings show a clear pattern. Both pools are well-liked, but the Magnolia Pool scores slightly higher for crowd level and cleanliness, while the Mill Pond Pool scores slightly higher for size and layout.
| Pool Area | Survey Question | Rating | What It Tells Us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnolia Pool | Size and Layout | 4.58 | Guests rate the area very highly |
| Magnolia Pool | Crowd Level | 4.61 | Generally the quieter-feeling pool area |
| Magnolia Pool | Cleanliness | 4.67 — Highest | The strongest pool-related rating |
| Mill Pond Pool | Size and Layout | 4.61 | Strong layout score for the main family pool |
| Mill Pond Pool | Crowd Level | 4.34 — Lowest | Still strong, but reflects a busier family pool environment |
| Mill Pond Pool | Cleanliness | 4.50 | Cleanliness remains a strength |
The lower crowd-level score for the Mill Pond Pool does not mean guests dislike it. It reflects what you would expect from the resort’s main family pool. More families use it because it has the waterslide, splash area, playground, and Evergreens nearby.

The Mill Pond Pool
The Mill Pond Pool is the main pool at Shades of Green and the best choice for families who want the most activity.
The pool is shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head and ears, which gives it a little Disney-style personality while still feeling like part of the quieter Shades of Green resort environment.
Mill Pond Pool is best for:
- Families with children
- Waterslide time
- Kids’ splash area
- Playground access
- Lunch or snacks from Evergreens
- Active resort days
- Guests who want the main pool atmosphere
The Mill Pond Pool includes a waterslide and a kids’ splash area. The dry playground is also nearby, making this side of the resort especially convenient for families with younger children.
Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill is located right next to the Mill Pond Pool. That makes it easy to grab lunch, drinks, or snacks without leaving the pool area.
This is one reason the Mill Pond Pool works so well for resort days. Families can swim, eat at Evergreens, return to the pool, and stay in the same general area for much of the day.
The Mill Pond Pool is also handicap accessible. Lifeguards are on duty at both Shades of Green pools.
Steve’s Perspective: If your family has children, this is probably where you will spend most of your pool time. The Mill Pond Pool has the energy, the slide, the splash area, the playground, and Evergreens. It is the more active pool area, and that is exactly why many families love it.
The Magnolia Pool
The Magnolia Pool is the quieter of the two Shades of Green pool areas.
It has traditionally served as the resort’s quiet pool and is usually the better choice for guests who want a calmer, more relaxing pool experience.
Magnolia Pool is best for:
- Quieter afternoons
- Adults
- Reading or relaxing
- Hot tub access
- Less active pool time
- Guests staying near the Magnolia Pool
- Calmer Poolside Room locations
The Magnolia Pool is a zero-entry pool located in a quieter corner of the resort. It is usually less busy than the Mill Pond Pool and often has fewer children nearby.
The resort’s hot tub is also located at the Magnolia Pool.
Chip and Dale’s Deli is located close to the Magnolia Pool, making it easy to pick up drinks or snacks to enjoy poolside.
Steve’s Perspective: I think the Magnolia Pool is the better choice when you want to slow down. It is not where I would send a family looking for the most kid activity, but it is excellent for a quieter afternoon, a soak in the hot tub, or a break from the noise and pace of the parks.
How Pool Time Shapes a Shades of Green Resort Day
One thing many first-time guests do not realize is that the pools often become the center of a resort day at Shades of Green.
Shades of Green is a quieter resort. It does not have the same level of themed entertainment, lounges, shopping, nightlife, or public-space activity that you find at some Disney Deluxe Resorts.
That is not a criticism. It is simply part of understanding how the resort works.
On a resort-focused day, families often rotate between the pools, dining locations, and their room. A typical pool day might look something like this:
- Breakfast at Garden Gallery, Express Café, or Java Café
- Morning swim at Mill Pond or Magnolia Pool
- Lunch at Evergreens or takeout from Chip and Dale’s Deli
- More pool time in the afternoon
- Break in the room
- Dinner at the resort, Disney Springs, or a theme park
This is why the pools matter so much. If you plan a resort day at Shades of Green, the pool area will likely be where much of that day happens.
Should You Book a Poolside Room?
Poolside Rooms can be a great choice, but only for the right kind of vacation.
All Shades of Green Poolside Rooms are located on the first floor of the Magnolia Wing and face either the Magnolia Pool or Mill Pond Pool. The rooms themselves are identical to Standard Rooms. What you are paying for is location.
If your family plans meaningful pool time, resort days, midday breaks, or easy access to Evergreens, a Poolside Room may be worth the upgrade.
If your vacation is mostly park-focused and you only expect to use the pools once or twice, a Standard Room is probably the better value.

Steve’s Best Summer Tip: Take a Midday Break
One of my best Shades of Green pool tips is especially useful in the summer: use the pools as part of a midday break from the theme parks.
Hit the parks early and get as much done as possible before the hottest part of the day. Then return to Shades of Green for a nap, a swim, and a change of clothes.
By late afternoon or evening, you will be rested, refreshed, and ready to head back out for dinner, nighttime entertainment, fireworks, or a few more attractions.
This strategy works especially well at Shades of Green because the resort is calm, the rooms are large, and the pool areas make it easy to reset before returning to the parks.

Military Family Experiences
The following comments illustrate the survey findings and represent themes that appear repeatedly in guest feedback.
Military Family Experience: Family Pool Time
Our kids loved the day we spent at the pool… especially the slides.
Military Family Experience: Magnolia Pool
The quiet pool was empty on the day we visited and really relaxing!
Military Family Experience: Mill Pond Pool
The Mill Pond Pool was awesome. We loved having Evergreens right there.
Military Family Experience: Cleanliness and Lifeguards
Great lifeguards – always friendly and knowledgeable.
Military Family Experience: Realistic Tradeoff
We loved it but they closed too early at Mill Pond area.
Bottom Line
Both Shades of Green pool areas are excellent, but they serve different purposes.
The Mill Pond Pool is the better fit for families who want the waterslide, splash area, playground, Evergreens access, and a more active pool atmosphere. The Magnolia Pool is the better fit for guests who want a quieter, more relaxed pool experience with hot tub access.
For park-focused trips, the pools may be a pleasant bonus. For resort-focused days, they become one of the most important parts of the entire Shades of Green experience.
