Shades of Green Resort at Walt Disney World
Shades of Green is the U.S. military resort at Walt Disney World, and for many eligible families it can be one of the best lodging values in Central Florida.
But the real question is not simply, “Is Shades of Green cheaper?” The better question is, “Is Shades of Green the right resort for the way your family vacations?”
Shades of Green is an Armed Forces Recreation Center located on Walt Disney World property near Magic Kingdom. It offers military room rates, large guest rooms, a military discounted ticket office, restaurants, pools, transportation to the theme parks, and access to several important Disney resort benefits.
This guide will help you decide whether Shades of Green fits your needs, what to expect before you arrive, and which details matter most when comparing it with Disney resorts.

Should You Consider Shades of Green?
Yes. If you are eligible, Shades of Green should almost always be part of your Walt Disney World resort comparison.
It is not a Disney-owned resort, and it is not trying to be one. You will not find Disney character theming in the rooms. You will not be on the monorail. The walkway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is permanently closed.
What you do get is a spacious, well-maintained military resort with stable rank-based rates, some of the largest standard guest rooms on Walt Disney World property, a military ticket office, a quieter setting, and several Disney vacation benefits.
Shades of Green is a great fit if you:
- Want more room than many Disney resort rooms provide
- Are traveling with children, teens, grandparents, or multiple adults
- Value space, function, and comfort over Disney theming
- Plan to buy military discounted Disney or Universal tickets
- Want predictable room rates that do not change by season or day of the week
- Are staying several nights and want a room that feels comfortable beyond just sleeping
- Plan to take midday breaks or spend meaningful time at the resort
You may prefer a Disney resort if you:
- Want heavy Disney theming inside your resort and room
- Want direct monorail, Skyliner, or boat transportation from your resort
- Prefer being fully inside the Disney resort system
- Are booking a Disney vacation package with Disney Dining Plan options
- Are willing to pay more for location, theming, or transportation convenience
Steve Says: Shades of Green is not the right answer for every Disney vacation, but it is one of the first places I recommend military families seriously consider. Compare the complete experience—room, rate, transportation, benefits, and atmosphere—not just the theming.
What Military Families Like Most About Shades of Green
Military Disney Tips Research: Based on nearly a decade of reader surveys, room size is one of the most consistently praised aspects of staying at Shades of Green.
Guests rarely focus on the square footage itself. They talk about what the space allows their family to do: unpack, spread out, get ready more easily, take comfortable breaks, and complete a multi-day Disney vacation without feeling crammed into the room.
The research also shows that military families value layout, practicality, comfort, and family functionality more than luxury finishes.
STEVE NOTE: We stayed at Shades of Green for our family’s first multi-day Disney World trip for a whole week and loved it! It was early June, just after the kids got out of school, and it was HOT. We came back each day during the hottest part of the afternoon to cool off in the room, enjoy the pool, and change into dry clothes before returning to the parks. That trip convinced us that returning to the room in the afternoon was not wasting park time—it made the evenings much more enjoyable.
What Is Shades of Green?
Shades of Green was originally built, owned, and operated by the Walt Disney World Company under various names. Since 1994, it has operated as an Armed Forces Recreation Center serving eligible members of the U.S. military community, their families, certain Department of Defense guests, and sponsored guests.
The resort is located on Walt Disney World property in Central Florida near Magic Kingdom and the Disney golf courses. It is a self-sustaining DoD facility. No outside taxpayer funds are used for its operation or upkeep, and guests must meet eligibility and ID requirements.
Shades of Green has 586 standard guest rooms and eleven family suites. The resort includes restaurants, pools, recreation, paid parking, bell services, a fitness room, self-service laundry facilities, a mini Exchange, and a military discounted ticket sales office.
I am often asked whether staying at Shades of Green feels like staying in billeting on base. It does not. Shades of Green is a well-maintained resort hotel. It lacks Disney room theming, but it does not feel like temporary lodging on a military installation.

What Are the Rooms Like?
This is where Shades of Green is strongest.
Standard rooms are about 480 square feet and include two queen beds, a single sleeper sofa, a private balcony or patio, a mini refrigerator, table and chairs, an in-room safe, a coffee maker, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
Standard and Poolside rooms sleep five guests, plus a crib when requested.
The room setup is especially helpful during busy mornings, midday breaks, bedtime, and packing.
Bathroom Layouts Vary by Wing
One room feature many first-time guests do not realize is that the bathroom layout depends on which guest room wing you are assigned.
Standard Rooms in the Palm Wing have a split bathroom design with the toilet and shower in one room and a separate vanity area with double sinks. This layout makes it much easier for multiple family members to get ready at the same time.
Standard and Poolside Rooms in the Magnolia Wing have a traditional single-room bathroom with one sink. Families with several people getting ready at once may find mornings more crowded.
Steve Says: If a split bathroom and double sinks would make your mornings easier, request a Palm Wing room when you book. Requests are never guaranteed, but this is the kind of room request that can improve the daily routine.
Are Shades of Green Rooms Dated?
You may still find older online comments describing Shades of Green rooms as dated. Some of those comments were accurate when they were written because they reflected the pre-renovation era.
Both guest room wings have since been renovated. Current planning should focus on room layout, bathroom configuration, location, and whether the room fits your family.
Steve Says: I have seen first-time guests arrive expecting the rooms to feel old because they read reviews written years ago. They are often pleasantly surprised by the current room size and condition.
Standard Guest Rooms
Standard rooms are the main room type at Shades of Green and offer the basic layout, sleeping capacity, and amenities that make the resort appealing to families.
Poolside Guest Rooms

Pool View from a Magnolia Pool, Poolside Room (#102)
Poolside rooms are the same size as Standard rooms and include the same amenities. The difference is their location and patio access. Poolside rooms are on the first floor in the Magnolia Wing and face one of the two pool areas.
These rooms are especially appealing if your family plans significant pool time or wants convenient access to the resort’s recreation area.
Family Suites
Shades of Green offers eleven family suite combinations. Five sleep up to six guests, five sleep up to eight guests, and one sleeps up to ten guests.
Because the number of suites is very limited, they book early. Begin planning as soon as your dates are firm. Reservations open 365 days in advance and suites are frequently booked at or shortly after that point.
All but one of the suites are located in the Palm Wing.

Which Wing Should You Request?
Shades of Green has two guest room wings extending from each side of the main lobby area. The Magnolia Wing was the original guest room wing. The Palm Wing was added during the 2002–2004 expansion.
Both wings have renovated rooms. The right choice depends on the features and locations that matter most to you.
Magnolia Wing
The Magnolia Wing has both pools and Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill outside the doors. All Poolside rooms are located in this wing. Views are generally toward the Magnolia Golf Course or the resort pool areas. The Magnolia Spa is also located on this side of the resort.
The Magnolia Wing has 301 rooms arranged in a compact, squared-off Y layout. Even the farther rooms do not feel as distant as they might in a long, straight hotel hallway.
Standard and Poolside Rooms in the Magnolia Wing have a traditional single-room bathroom with one sink.
The Magnolia Wing is a strong fit if pool access, Evergreens, or a more resort-centered stay matters to your family.
Palm Wing
The Palm Wing is attached to the parking structure. Views are generally toward the Palm Golf Course or toward the Magnolia Wing and interior resort landscaping, though a few rooms have parking lot views.
The Palm Wing has 285 rooms arranged in a stretched T-shaped layout. The parking garage entrance is near the short base of the T, while some rooms extend much farther down the longer hallways. The distance can feel substantial after a full park day.
The Palm Wing is a strong fit if parking access, garage convenience, suite availability, or the split bathroom layout matters to your family.
Steve Says: Do not choose a wing based only on what someone online calls “best.” Consider whether you are driving, using the pools frequently, traveling with mobility concerns, or planning regular midday breaks.
Do Room Requests Matter?
Room requests can matter when they solve a specific planning problem.
Start by asking: What am I trying to make easier?
Useful requests can include reducing walking distance, being closer to the pool or parking, supporting mobility needs, or improving your family’s morning routine.
A request based only on someone else’s favorite room or wing may not improve your stay.
STEVE SAYS: Room requests can be made when booking Shades of Green online or by phone. Use the online form for simple requests. For detailed requests, call Shades of Green and explain what you are trying to accomplish. Reservations may be made online at shadesofgreen.org or by phone at (888) 593-2242.

How Do Shades of Green Rates Work?
Shades of Green room rates are based on rank, pay grade, or eligible status. Guests are placed into Category 1, Category 2, or Category 3, and that category determines the nightly rate.
Rates change each fiscal year on October 1. Unlike Disney resort prices, Shades of Green rates do not fluctuate by season or day of the week, except for special offers and packages. Very rarely—three or four times over the last 20 years—rates have changed during the year.
This predictability is especially valuable during holidays, weekends, and other high-price Disney travel periods.

Guest Categories
Category 1 includes E-1 to E-6 and Cadets. E-1 through E-6 and Cadet-sponsored rooms receive the rate that applies to Category 2.
Category 2 includes E-7 through E-9, O-1 through O-3, WO-1 to CW-3, widows, Medal of Honor recipients, 100% disabled veterans, Category 1 sponsored guests, and Category 2 sponsored guests.
Category 3 includes O-4 through O-10, CW-4, CW-5, active and retired DoD civilians, Category 3 sponsored guests, foreign military assigned to a U.S. military installation only, DoD contractors assigned to a U.S. military installation only, veterans who are Purple Heart recipients, veterans who are former prisoners of war, all veterans with service-connected disabilities, and individuals approved and designated as Primary Family Caregivers of eligible veterans under the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.
How Does Shades of Green Compare to Disney Resorts?
Shades of Green is often compared with Disney Value, Moderate, and Deluxe resorts, but each comparison highlights different strengths.
Compared with Disney Value Resorts, Shades of Green offers much larger rooms and a quieter setting. Disney Value Resorts offer stronger Disney theming and Disney-operated transportation.
Compared with Disney Moderate Resorts, Shades of Green can offer excellent room value and a Magic Kingdom area location, while Disney Moderate Resorts provide Disney theming and full Disney resort integration.
Compared with Disney Deluxe Resorts, Shades of Green offers generous room size at a lower military rate. Disney Deluxe Resorts can provide premium locations, monorail, Skyliner or boat access, stronger theming, and more extensive dining or recreation depending on the resort.

Steve Says: I do not think every military family should automatically choose the cheapest room. Choose the resort that gives your family the best overall trip, even when that is not the lowest nightly rate.
Will You Use the Amenities?
Shades of Green offers pools, dining, recreation, laundry, fitness facilities, parking, and a small Exchange.
If your family spends every waking moment in the theme parks, some amenities may matter very little. If you take breaks, swim, do laundry, buy snacks, or schedule non-park time, they can make the stay easier.
See: Shades of Green Resort Activities and Amenities Overview
Pools
Shades of Green has two heated pools, including the Mickey-shaped Mill Pond Pool. The resort also has a hot tub, kiddie splash area, and children’s play set.

Shades of Green’s Millpond Splash Area
Laundry
Laundry facilities are available and are especially useful for longer trips, split stays, and families trying to pack lighter.
Fitness Center
The fitness center is open 24 hours a day.
AAFES General Store
The AAFES General Store sells water, snacks, sundries, Disney merchandise, and other useful vacation items.
Other Amenities
Shades of Green also has access to golf, tennis courts, an arcade, and resort recreation options.
Shades of Green is a smoke-free resort. Pets are not permitted.
Should You Buy Tickets at Shades of Green?
The Shades of Green Ticket Office is one of the resort’s most useful planning resources.
It sells Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets, other Disney military ticket options, Universal Orlando military tickets, SeaWorld tickets, and tickets for many other Central Florida attractions. Purchases are tax-free, and the staff can help eligible guests understand ticket choices, current offers, and important rules.

What Is Dining Like at Shades of Green?
Shades of Green offers coffee, grab-and-go breakfasts, casual poolside food, table-service dining, takeout, and room delivery.
The main planning issue is timing. Breakfast fits naturally before a park day, and resort or pool days are ideal for eating at Shades. Returning from the parks solely for lunch or dinner is less convenient.
Dining locations include Mangino’s, Garden Gallery, Evergreens Sports Bar & Grill, Express Café, Java Café, and Disney-operated Chip and Dale’s Deli near the Magnolia Pool.
See:
How Does Transportation Work?
Shades of Green is a Magic Kingdom area resort, but it is not located on the monorail.
The resort provides bus transportation to Walt Disney World destinations, but the system works differently from Disney Resort transportation. Magic Kingdom and EPCOT trips use the Transportation and Ticket Center, while Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom use shared service to charter bus areas.
The permanently closed walkway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort means guests should plan around Shades buses, Disney transportation transfers, rideshare, or driving.
You must arrange your own transportation from Orlando International Airport. Mears Connect Driven by Sunshine is one available option.
Overnight parking at Shades of Green is $17 per day. Disney theme park parking is $35 per day for guests who drive to the parks.
Shades of Green also charges an hourly rate for day guests visiting to dine, use the Ticket Office, or shop at the Exchange. The current rate is 0–2 hours free, then $1 per hour with a $3 minimum and $24 maximum.

Shades of Green is not a Disney hotel, but guests receive several important Disney vacation benefits.
- Early Theme Park Entry
- Extended Evening Hours when offered and when eligibility applies
- Ability to make Advance Dining Reservations for the entire trip 60 days before check-in
- Use of Disney transportation once on Disney property
- Early access to Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass purchase windows

- Shades of Green is not on the monorail. The walkway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is permanently closed.
- Standard and Poolside rooms sleep five plus a crib when available.
- Guest rooms do not include microwaves. Microwaves are available in laundry rooms and at Express Café.

Final Thoughts: Is Shades of Green Worth It?
For many eligible military families, Shades of Green is one of the best overall lodging values at Walt Disney World.
Its greatest strength is the combination of large rooms, practical layouts, military pricing, a quieter setting, ticket access, and useful Disney vacation benefits.
If you want Disney theming, monorail access, or a fully Disney-operated resort experience, you may prefer a Disney resort. If you want space, predictable pricing, and a resort designed for the military community, Shades of Green deserves a very close look.
Steve Says: Shades of Green can be a fantastic choice when its strengths match your priorities. If the resort itself needs to feel fully Disney from morning to night, compare your options carefully before booking.

Hi Roger,

I have seen email traffic instructing Offices to allow 2020 Salute Tickets that can’t be used towards tickets later.
Have you called them vs, emailing?
Attraction Ticket Hotline (407) 824-1403
I’m concern about the military Disneyworld tickets my son-in-law purchased for my wife and I. He’s a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force and bought us 6 day passes. I’m a disabled veteran but at only 40%. Can we sell our tickets back at Shades of Green since we don’t meet the requirements to go in without our active duty son in law?
Hi Mike,
There are usually no refunds on the Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets. You shouls call SHades of Green’s Ticket Office to discuss your situation.
Attraction Ticket Hotline (407) 824-1403
Category 3 has veterans with service connected disability. Category 1 was only for 100%
Hi Amanda,
I’m sorry what are you trying to say? Please use full detailed sentences.
Category 1 has no veterans in it. 100% DAV are in cat 2, all other vets when eligible are in 3.
Also categories are not explained on this page…

shadesofgreen.org
do you have a phone number to call to ask about tickets. sorry I couldn’t find it.
Hi Monty,
I don’t, I’m a retired military member who runs this informational website. Providing phone advice isn’t part of what I do.
If you’re confused and think this is the Shades of Green website, their ticket office number is (407) 824-1403.

Hi Steve,
We are planning our first trip to WDW and staying at SOG this January. I drink a LOT of coffee. What are the coffee makers like in room? Can I bring my own K-cups? Thanks.
Hi Darissa,
When last there they had Senseo type coffee pod makers.
I am reading for the individuals eligible to stay and trying to figure out if I would qualify? I am employee with the VHA? Next, my father is a Purple Heart recipient who is 20% disabled. Would he qualify anytime of year for just in January and September?
Hi Jan,
You would not be eligible, but your dad being a disabled vet is eligible year-round.
How can I find out if you have any military salute 4 day tickets available? I want to bring my family this weekend.
Well Shelby, you are a little confused. I don’t have any tickets available. This is an informational website run by a retired military member for our community’s knowledge.
However the Shades of Green ticket office always has all tickets that they sell in stock.
I am wondering how do we get military discounts miliary park tickets. Where do I get the phone number
Hi Michelle,
Please check out my Tickets Overview Page, look in the sec ion labeled Where Can I Buy These Tickets?
https://www.militarydisneytips.com/blog/military-discount-theme-park-tickets/
I’m a little confused. So if my husband is a non-retired veteran that doesn’t fall under one of the specialty categories, can we still purchase discounted tickets at a base or long-distance? Or we would ONLY get discount tickets if we stayed at Shades of Green in Jan or Sept? Thanks!
Hi Ely,
It’s the latter, just from Shades in Jan/Sept while staying there.
Does Disney still do overflow rates if shades is full?
Hi Heather,
Shades of Green currently states, “We also can help connect you to nearby hotels with special rates available for our guests,…” To me, this does not sound like Disney resorts, but could be perhaps, rather local national chains.
