Nestled among towering evergreens and misty mountain air, Grizzly Peak celebrates California’s great outdoors—from its national parks to its rugged frontier spirit.
The land’s signature bear-shaped mountain is one of Disney California Adventure’s most iconic sights, setting the stage for rafting adventures, nature trails, and forest-inspired dining. It’s the park’s calmest and most scenic escape, evoking the beauty and nostalgia of a vintage Yosemite campground.
Attractions
- Grizzly River Run (H42) (LL Multi) – A white-water rafting adventure through the heart of Grizzly Peak. Guests board six-person rafts for a wild journey filled with drops, swirling rapids, and plenty of splashes—including one guaranteed drenching finale. Pro tip: pack a poncho if you want to stay dry!
- Soarin’ Around the World (H40) (LL Multi) – One of Disney’s most beloved attractions. Board a hang-glider and soar over the world’s most breathtaking landmarks, from the Great Wall of China to the Eiffel Tower. With wind effects, scents, and sweeping visuals, it’s an unforgettable experience.
- Redwood Creek Challenge Trail – A massive outdoor play area designed for kids (and the young at heart). Climb rope bridges, explore caves, and complete activities themed to Disney’s Brother Bear and Up. Some features, like the rock climb and zip line, have a 42-inch height requirement.
Dining
- Smokejumpers Grill (B, L, D, S, $$) – Counter Service – Mobile Order. Inspired by California’s firefighting heroes, this grill serves customizable burgers, fries, onion rings, ribs, and chicken sandwiches. The open-air seating and rustic décor make it an ideal place to unwind after your adventure on the river.
Shopping
- Rushin’ River Outfitters – Outdoor gear, clothing, postcards, and maps—plus ponchos and towels for those drenched from Grizzly River Run.
- Humphrey’s Service & Supplies – Named after Disney’s classic bear character, this shop sells forest ranger–themed apparel, Smokey Bear merchandise, and camping-inspired souvenirs.
Entrance from Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel
One of the most convenient features of Grizzly Peak is that it serves as the exclusive back entrance to Disney California Adventure for guests staying at the Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.
This private entryway is located at the rear of the hotel and opens directly into the Grizzly Peak area, near Grizzly River Run. It’s a beautifully themed gateway lined with pine trees and rustic signage that feels like you’re stepping straight from a luxury lodge into a national park.
To use this entrance, guests must present a valid hotel room key and park admission. Security screening is completed right outside the gate, and in most cases, lines here are much shorter than those at the park’s main entrance in the Esplanade.
Many on-property guests prefer this entrance for early morning access to attractions like Soarin’ Around the World, or as a convenient mid-day return route for hotel breaks. It’s also a wonderful way to experience the park “waking up”—often quieter, shaded, and full of that morning Grizzly Peak atmosphere.
Ambiance & History
Grizzly Peak was one of Disney California Adventure’s original lands when the park opened in 2001. Initially, it resembled a rustic outpost called “Grizzly River Recreation Area.” In 2015, the land received a major redesign that expanded its borders and transformed nearby Condor Flats (a separate aviation-themed zone) into the Grizzly Peak Airfield, seamlessly blending the two areas under one cohesive natural theme.
The land’s visual centerpiece is Grizzly Peak Mountain, a 110-foot-tall rock formation shaped like a bear howling at the sky. Its design draws inspiration from iconic California landscapes such as Yosemite’s Half Dome and Yellowstone’s geothermal rivers. From the pine scent in the air to the ambient sound of waterfalls, Grizzly Peak is a masterclass in Disney’s environmental storytelling.
This is also one of the most atmospheric places in the park at sunset—when golden light hits the cliffs and the mist from Grizzly River Run drifts through the trees, creating pure Disney magic.
Disney California Adventure Layout
Grizzly Peak is on the “right” side of the park as you walk down Buena Vista Street—guests reach it by taking the right-hand route at Carthay Circle. It’s also the area where the Grand Californian’s dedicated entrance drops you into Disney California Adventure.
Grizzly Peak is connected to:
- Buena Vista Street via Carthay Circle
- Performance Corridor via the main walkway deeper into the park
- Pixar Pier via the bridge paths around Paradise Bay
- Paradise Gardens Park by continuing around the bay toward the park’s central/back areas
Wrap-Up
Grizzly Peak is the heart of nature within Disney California Adventure—a tranquil retreat filled with thrills, beauty, and nostalgia. Whether you’re braving the rapids, soaring across the globe, or simply enjoying a quiet meal under the pines, this land reminds guests to slow down and enjoy California’s wild side. It’s both peaceful and exhilarating—the perfect finale to your day in the park.
