Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is not a Disney theme park hotel dropped into Hawaii. It’s a Hawaiian resort experience with Disney touches woven throughout.
Located in Ko Olina on the island of Oahu, Aulani is Disney’s Hawaiian destination resort, combining beautiful surroundings, Hawaiian culture, family activities, Disney characters, pools, dining, and beach time into one very different kind of Disney vacation.
Aulani is very different from staying at a Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort hotel. There are no theme parks next door, no monorail, no Skyliner, and no Disney bus system taking you to attractions. Instead, Aulani is designed to be the destination.
This is a resort where families can spend full days swimming, floating on the lazy river, relaxing by the beach, meeting Disney characters, enjoying Hawaiian cultural activities, and simply slowing down. For Disney fans, it offers just enough Disney magic to feel special without turning the entire trip into a theme park-style vacation.
That difference is important. Aulani is still Disney, but it is also very much Hawaii. The best Aulani trips are usually planned with that in mind.
Guest Rooms
Aulani offers standard hotel rooms, suites, Disney Vacation Club Deluxe Studios, and larger villas. The mix of room types makes the resort a good fit for couples, families, and multigenerational groups, but choosing the right room type and view category can make a big difference in both comfort and cost.
Standard Hotel Rooms
Aulani’s standard hotel rooms are similar in concept to deluxe Disney hotel rooms, with two queen beds or one king bed options in many categories. Rooms include a private balcony or porch, small refrigerator, coffee maker, television, safe, and typical hotel room amenities.
STEVE SAYS: During our recent three-generation trip to Aulani, we stayed in a 2-bedroom villa. The furnishings and beds were great! We enjoyed spending time in the room. Note, my only slight complaint was that the room’s safe was rather small, and it was tough for 5 adults to get everything they wanted into it.
Disney Vacation Club Villas
Aulani also has a large Disney Vacation Club component. DVC accommodations include Deluxe Studios, 1-Bedroom Villas, 2-Bedroom Villas, and 3-Bedroom Grand Villas. These can be especially useful for longer stays or larger families because many villa categories include kitchen facilities, extra living space, and, in larger villas, washers and dryers.
For families trying to manage food costs in Hawaii, having even a kitchenette can be a real advantage. Groceries are not cheap on Oahu, but being able to handle breakfast, snacks, drinks, and leftovers in the room can help control costs.
Aulani Room Views
Aulani offers several view categories, including Standard View, Island Gardens View, Poolside Gardens View, Partial Ocean View, and Ocean View. However, this is one area where guests should pay very close attention before assuming what they will actually see from the room.
In our experience, some rooms categorized as Ocean View may feel more like partial ocean views. Our room was booked as an Ocean View, but the primary view looked toward the resort next door and the industrial area beyond it, with the ocean visible only off to the far right.
To me, an ocean view should fully face the ocean. There are only a few rooms on each floor that fit that description. At Aulani, a full ocean-facing room may not always be what guests receive, even when paying (cash or points) for the higher view category.
This does not mean the room itself was bad, but it is something guests should understand before spending extra for a premium view. If the view is very important to you, ask questions, look carefully at resort maps, and understand that “Ocean View” may not always mean a straight-on ocean-facing room.
STEVE SAYS: Next time, I’ll opt for a cheaper category! I’d wanted to splurge this time around, as most of the family had never been to Hawaii.

Dining
Dining is a much bigger part of the Aulani experience than it is at many Disney hotels. Since many guests spend full resort days at Aulani, you may eat most or all of your meals on property unless you have a rental car or plan to walk to nearby Ko Olina dining locations.
Table Service Dining
AMAʻAMA is Aulani’s signature oceanfront dining location. This is the resort’s upscale dining experience and is best suited for guests looking for a slower, more elevated meal.
Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands serves both character breakfast and dinner. The character breakfast is the big draw for many families, but dinner is also a table service meal and does not include characters.
STEVE SAYS: We loved the Character Breakfast; it was the most full-on Disney experience of the trip. After checking in for breakfast, you join the line for a one-on-one meet and greet with Chef Mickey. Afterwards, you head to the waiting area until your table is ready. As usual for a character breakfast, the characters will stop by your table to interact with your party, Characters include: Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Chip and Dale.
Quick Service and Grab-and-Go Dining
Ulu Cafe is one of the most practical dining locations at Aulani. It offers quick-service meals, snacks, refillable mug stations, grab-and-go items, and convenient options for families spending the day around the pool.
For many families, Ulu Cafe will become a regular stop during the trip because it is easy, casual, and centrally located.
STEVE SAYS: We stopped by the Ulu Cafe often, the acai bowls were great to start your day, and stopping by at 11 sharp when they put the musubi out was a must!
Off the Hook Located near the beach and the main Waikolohe Valley pool area. This poolside venue serves as a morning coffee bar with lattes, cold brew, and grab-and-go breakfast options. We hit it every morning!
Pool and Beach Dining
One of the nice conveniences at Aulani is that you do not necessarily have to leave your pool chair, beach chair, or cabana area to get food and drinks.
Servers regularly circulate through many of the pool and beach areas, taking food and beverage orders directly from guests. This makes it very easy to settle in for a full resort day without constantly packing up and heading to a restaurant or quick service location.
The Poolside Dining Menu includes appetizers, burgers, tacos, pizzas, salads, desserts, tropical cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic specialty drinks.
Some of the more notable menu items include Ahi Poke Nachos, Garlic Shrimp Tacos, Butcher’s Favorite Burger, Korean-Style Fried Chicken Wings, Tropical Mai Tais, Lava Flows, and several other tropical drinks that fit perfectly with the resort atmosphere.
For families spending long days around Waikolohe Valley or the beach lagoon, this service becomes a bigger benefit than you might initially expect. Being able to order lunch, snacks, or drinks without completely disrupting the day adds a lot to the relaxed Aulani experience.
Lounges and Bars
The ʻŌlelo Room is one of the most distinctive lounges at Aulani, with a strong Hawaiian language theme and a relaxed atmosphere. This is a great example of how Aulani blends Disney design with Hawaiian culture rather than simply adding Disney characters everywhere.
STEVE SAYS: The ʻŌlelo Room serves sushi, appetizers/small plates, and dessert. We ordered a bunch of items and shared them all around for dinner one night.
Wailana Pool Bar is another convenient option for drinks and casual food near the pool area.
Character Dining
Aulani’s character breakfast at Makahiki is one of the most popular dining experiences at the resort. Reservations can be important, especially during busier travel periods.
Dining reservations at Aulani can generally be booked 45 days in advance on the Aulani App.
Pools, Beach, and Water Activities
The pools and water areas are the heart of the Aulani experience. For many families, this is the reason to stay here.
Waikolohe Valley
Waikolohe Valley is the resort’s main pool and recreation area. It includes pools, water slides, kids’ play areas, whirlpool spas, and the lazy river. The entire area is beautifully themed and feels much more immersive than a standard hotel pool complex.
Waikolohe Stream Lazy River
The lazy river is one of Aulani’s signature features. It winds through the resort’s lush pool area and is a major part of the relaxed Aulani rhythm: float, swim, snack, repeat.
NOTE: The lazy river can be crowded at times, and when it is, there is a shortage of tubes!
Water Slides and Kids’ Play Areas
Aulani includes water slides and children’s water play areas, including Menehune Bridge, which is especially appealing for younger kids. Families with children can easily spend hours in this area without feeling like they need to leave the resort.
Rainbow Reef
Rainbow Reef is Aulani’s private snorkeling lagoon experience. It is actually an aquarium tank separate from the public beach lagoon and allows guests to snorkel in a controlled environment with tropical fish.
This is an additional-cost activity, so families should decide whether it fits their budget and interest level.
The Beach and Ko Olina Lagoon
Aulani sits along one of the Ko Olina lagoons. The lagoon is beautiful, generally calmer than many open-ocean beaches, and a major part of the appeal of the resort.
However, it is very important to understand that this is not a private Disney beach. The beach and lagoon area is shared with the neighboring resort, and public beach access is also available, including a public parking lot next to Aulani.
That does not mean the beach felt unsafe or unpleasant to us, but parents should know that anyone can be on the beach. This is Hawaii, not Castaway Cay or a gated Disney pool area. Keep an eye on your children and your belongings, just as you would at any public beach.
There is also a newly announced resort project planned next door, so this shared beach environment will become even more noticeable in the future.
Cabanas
Aulani offers cabana rentals for guests who want a more comfortable and reserved pool or beach experience. They are expensive, but for families who can afford them, they can dramatically improve the day.
Having a dedicated shaded space, seating, service, and a home base can make a long pool day much easier, especially for multigenerational families or families with young children.
Cabanas can be reserved ahead of time by calling Aulani. Numbers are limited, so if you are interested, make the effort to call. A small number of cabanas are set aside for day-of bookings.
STEVE’S TIP: Cabana rentals are not cheap! But even so, we thought it was well worth the price! We had a great shady home base for our whole pool day. We had a dedicated server all day that brought us anything we wanted from the Wailana Pool Bar, Ulu Cafe, and the Poolside Dining menu. The cabana also came with 6 waters, sunscreen, a Bluetooth speaker (which we loved), a Fruit plate in the morning, and a hummus plate and a dessert plate in the afternoon. We liked it so much, we rented another on our second pool day!
Entertainment and Activities
Aulani offers far more than pools and beach time. The resort has a full schedule of activities, entertainment, character experiences, and cultural offerings. This is one of the reasons Aulani feels different from a typical luxury beach resort.
Included Activities
Many Aulani activities are included with your stay, while others require reservations or an additional fee. Activities may include crafts, cultural programs, music, storytelling, fitness activities, and family entertainment.
The daily ʻIwa activity schedule is important. Check it regularly because activity times, locations, and availability can change.
Disney Character Experiences
Disney characters appear throughout the resort, often in vacation-style outfits that fit the Hawaiian setting. Character experiences at Aulani feel different from the theme parks because the resort setting is more relaxed.
STEVE SAYS: Meet and Greets were both scheduled (check the app) and unscheduled throughout the day. Lines were never too long and moved quickly.
Aunty’s Beach House
Aunty’s Beach House is Aulani’s supervised children’s activity center for kids ages 4 to 12. It offers games, crafts, and themed activities. Pre-registration is required, and some experiences may require reservations or additional fees.
Pau Hana Room
The Pau Hana Room is Aulani’s community activity space. It hosts crafts, games, family activities, and various scheduled experiences throughout the day.
During our visit, our grandchildren made their own Mickey ears here, and we also checked out iPads for the Menehune Adventure Trail scavenger hunt around the resort.
The Menehune Adventure Trail is one of Aulani’s more unique activities. Using an interactive tablet, families follow clues and explore different areas of the resort while uncovering hidden magical effects and interactive elements tied to Hawaiian Menehune legends.
The Pau Hana Room is separate from Aunty’s Beach House and offers a more flexible family activity experience rather than supervised childcare.
Families with children in the right age range should look into this before the trip rather than waiting until arrival.
Evening Entertainment
Aulani also offers evening entertainment and family activities, which may include live music, movie nights, campfire storytelling, and other resort programming.
STEVE SAYS: We enjoyed the live music at the Olelo Room in the evenings!
Location
Aulani is located in Ko Olina on the western side of Oahu. This is a quieter, resort-focused area, very different from Waikiki.
That location is one of Aulani’s greatest strengths and one of the biggest things first-time visitors need to understand. Ko Olina feels calmer and more contained than Honolulu, but it is also farther from many of Oahu’s major sightseeing locations.
Ko Olina
Ko Olina is a planned resort area with lagoons, walking paths, nearby dining, and a more relaxed feel. It is beautiful and family-friendly, but it does not have the same energy, nightlife, or density of Waikiki.
Distance from Honolulu and Waikiki
Aulani is not in Honolulu or Waikiki. Travel times vary heavily based on traffic, but guests should not assume they can casually pop back and forth without planning.
If you want a vacation centered around Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, Diamond Head, North Shore sightseeing, or multiple island excursions, transportation planning becomes very important.
Nearby Dining and Shopping
There are some nearby dining and shopping options within Ko Olina, including convenient places for snacks, drinks, and basic supplies. These can be useful because Aulani dining and resort prices add up quickly. And they are within an easy walk from Aulani.
STEVE SAYS: We didn’t eat at any of the Ko Olina restaurants, though I’ve heard they are good. We did spend a couple of hours looking through the stores and souvenir shopping.
Transportation
Transportation at Aulani is completely different from Walt Disney World or Disneyland. There is no Disney transportation network taking you to parks, shopping districts, or island attractions.
Airport Transportation
Guests flying into Honolulu will need transportation from the airport to Aulani. Options may include rental cars, rideshare, taxis, shuttles, or private transportation.
STEVE SATS: We rented a car at the airport as we had two off-property excursions planned (Pearl Harbor/Dole Plantation, and Waikiki), and as DVC members, we had free parking at Aulani
Rental Cars
A rental car can be very useful at Aulani, especially if you plan to visit Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, the North Shore, grocery stores, or other Oahu attractions.
However, guests should factor in parking costs and whether they actually plan to leave the resort enough to justify the expense.
Getting Around Ko Olina
Ko Olina is walkable in some areas, especially around the lagoons and nearby resort zone. But this is not the same as being in the middle of Waikiki, where a wide range of restaurants, shops, and attractions are clustered together.
Parking
Aulani currently charges $40 per night for parking, though Disney Vacation Club members staying on points are free.
Features
Aulani has many of the amenities guests expect from a high-end destination resort, plus several Disney-specific touches.
Laniwai Spa
Laniwai Spa is Aulani’s full-service spa. It is one of the resort’s premium features and may appeal to adults looking for a quieter, more relaxing part of the trip.
Fitness Center
Aulani has a fitness center for guests who want to keep up with workouts during their stay.
Shopping
Aulani has resort shopping with Disney, Aulani-specific, and Hawaii-inspired merchandise. For Disney fans, the Aulani-exclusive merchandise can be a major draw.
Laundry
Laundry options are available at the resort, which can be especially helpful for longer Hawaii stays, families with children, and guests using DVC villas.
Military Discount Information
Aulani does sometimes offer military discounts. Military families should also understand that Aulani discounts can be limited and may not be available for every date, room type, or view category.
For full details, see my dedicated page on Aulani military discounts.
Best For
Aulani is not the right fit for every Hawaii trip, but it can be a wonderful choice for the right family.
Families with Younger Children
Aulani is especially strong for families with younger children because of the pools, lazy river, kids’ water play areas, character experiences, beach lagoon, and family activities.
Multigenerational Families
Aulani can also work very well for multigenerational trips. Grandparents, parents, and children can enjoy the same resort while still choosing different levels of activity. This worked so well for us!
Some family members may spend the day at the pool, while others relax on the beach, book spa time, take part in activities, or head out for sightseeing.
Disney Fans Who Want Hawaii, Not Theme Parks
Aulani is a great fit for Disney fans who want the Disney standard of design, service, and family focus, but do not want a theme park vacation.
The Disney touches are present, but they do not overwhelm the Hawaiian setting.
DVC Members
Aulani is also a major destination for Disney Vacation Club members. Using points can make the stay feel more approachable, especially for families who would otherwise be looking at very high cash rates.
Maybe Not Ideal For
Aulani may not be the best choice for guests who want a budget Hawaii vacation, heavy nightlife, constant sightseeing, or a Waikiki-style location. It is also not ideal for guests who plan to spend very little time at the resort, because so much of Aulani’s value comes from actually using the resort.
Things to Know Before You Book
Hawaii Is Expensive
There is no way around it: Hawaii is expensive. Food, transportation, activities, groceries, and resort costs can add up quickly.
Aulani is a premium Disney resort in a premium Hawaii location, so families should plan carefully and avoid assuming that costs will feel similar to a Walt Disney World or Disneyland hotel stay.
Aulani Is a Resort Vacation
If you stay at Aulani, plan time to enjoy Aulani. The pools, beach, activities, characters, dining, and atmosphere are the reason to stay here.
If your trip plan has you leaving the resort early every morning and returning late every night, you may not get enough value from what makes Aulani special.
Dining and Activity Reservations Can Be Frustrating
Planning Aulani is not as smooth as planning for Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Some reservations can be made online or through the Aulani App, while others may require a phone call. The Hawaii time difference can also make calling less convenient for mainland guests.
Aulani dining reservations can generally be booked 45 days in advance, but availability, activity rules, and reservation processes can and do vary.
The Aulani App Is Not the Walt Disney World App
Guests who are used to the Walt Disney World or Disneyland apps may find the Aulani app disappointing. It can be harder to navigate, less intuitive, and less capable than Disney’s theme park apps.
Do not assume that everything you want to do can be easily handled in the app. For some things, you may need to check the daily schedule, visit a location in person, or call.
Pool Chair Strategy Matters
Aulani’s pool areas are popular, and pool seating is very competitive. Families who care about location, shade, or having a reliable home base should think through their pool strategy before arrival. Many people go to the pool area early to stake out their territory!!!
This is one reason cabanas can be so valuable for those who can afford them.
Aulani enforces a strict pool and beach chair policy to prevent “chair saving”. Only registered guests are permitted to use seating, and each guest is limited to one lounge chair.
- Before 8:00 AM: You must physically use or sit in the chairs; saving chairs with personal belongings is strictly prohibited and unattended items will be removed.
- After 8:00 AM: You may leave your chairs to go to the beach, eat, or participate in other activities. However, if belongings are left unattended for more than one hour, staff will fold the towel on the chair, start a timer, and remove your items to the nearest Kawele Korner if you do not return.
Wristbands Required: Guests must wear a daily, non-transferable wristband to access pool chairs and the beach.
Aulani Shuts Down Earlier Than You Might Expect
One thing that genuinely surprised us was how early much of Aulani closes in the evenings.
Unlike Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort hotels, Aulani does not have a late-night Disney atmosphere. Many dining locations and activities close fairly early, and during our stay, ʻŌlelo Room was the last major location open most nights, typically closing around 10 PM.
At first, this felt surprising, but it actually makes sense once you settle into the Aulani rhythm. Most guests are waking up early for beach time, pool time, excursions, character experiences, or to secure good pool seating.
Aulani is much more of an early morning resort than a late-night resort.
The Beach Is Public
Aulani may feel like a self-contained Disney beach resort, but the beach itself is not private. The lagoon area can be accessed by the public, and it is also shared with neighboring resort guests.
This is not necessarily a problem, but it is something parents should understand before letting children roam too freely.
You May Want Groceries
Because dining costs add up, many families may want to purchase groceries, drinks, snacks, or breakfast items. This is especially helpful for DVC villa stays, but even standard hotel room guests can benefit from having some basics on hand. Standard delivery services are available, and there is an ABC Store within walking distance in Ko Olina.
Our Thoughts
Aulani is one of the most unique Disney resorts we have ever visited. It does not feel like Walt Disney World, Disneyland, or even a Disney Cruise Line vacation. It has its own rhythm.
The best part of Aulani is the way Disney details are woven into a Hawaiian resort experience without taking over the entire vacation. You can meet Mickey, float the lazy river, enjoy Disney-level design, and still feel like you are in Hawaii.
That balance is what makes Aulani special.
At the same time, Aulani is expensive, and not every part of the experience is perfect. Room view categories can be frustrating; the app is not as useful as Disney’s theme park apps, and planning some activities or reservations can take more effort than expected. There are some reservations, such as the cabanas, that you have to call the resort to make versus using the app.
But when Aulani works, it really works. For families who want a relaxing Hawaii vacation with Disney comfort, characters, pools, activities, and beautiful surroundings, it can be a very memorable trip.
STEVE’S LAST THOUGHTS:
- I highly recommend renting a cabana if you can swing the price (currently $650 & $750 depending on size, there is a DVC Member Discount). Having that relaxing, private home base for the entire day was amazing!
- We stayed 6 nights and were sad to leave! There were things that we didn’t get to do, so if (when) we go back it will be for longer!
- This slow-paced vacation was so different than the fast-paced Disney theme park vacation that we are used to! Everything shutting down early took a little getting used to, but it’s not a nightlife resort, ot’s a calmer atmosphere where families wind down early.
