Why Disney Still Requires Park Reservations for Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets
If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World using a Disney Armed Forces Salute Ticket or the new 2026 Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket, you may be surprised to learn that Theme Park Reservations are required!
And you probably would ask the same question thousands of other families have asked:
If Disney got rid of park reservations, why do military tickets still require them?
It’s a fair question—and the confusion is understandable. Disney did remove park reservations for most standard tickets. But military promotional tickets, including the Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket, follow a different set of rules.
Here’s the real reason Disney still requires park reservations for military tickets—and what it means for your trip planning.
The Short Answer: Military Tickets Aren’t Date-Based
The biggest reason military tickets still require park reservations is simple:
They are not date-based tickets.
Most standard Walt Disney World tickets sold today (including the Military Theme Park Tickets, which are a different product) are tied to specific dates. Disney already knows when you’re arriving, how many days you’re visiting, and roughly how many guests will be in the parks on those days.
Because of that, Disney no longer needs a separate reservation system for those tickets.
Military promotional tickets work differently.
Military Salute Tickets Are Open-Ended by Design
The 4, 5, and 6-day Salute tickets, and the Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket are intentionally flexible. Instead of locking you into specific dates at purchase, they allows:
- Multiple visits
- Spread out over a long eligibility window
- No requirement to pick dates in advance when buying the ticket
That flexibility is exactly what makes the ticket so valuable for military families—but it’s also why Disney still needs a control mechanism.
Park reservations serve that purpose. They allow Disney to track expected attendance, prevent extreme overcrowding, and balance capacity across parks and dates.
Without reservations, Disney would have no visibility into when military ticket holders actually plan to visit.

It’s About Capacity Management, Not Restriction
This isn’t about limiting military access or making planning harder. In fact, park reservations are how Disney preserves flexibility for military tickets without converting them into rigid, date-based products.
Requiring reservations helps Disney keep the ticket flexible instead of restrictive. It supports:
- Long validity windows
- Fewer “blackout-style” limitations
- Continued Park Hopper and Park Hopper Plus options
- More predictable crowd management during peak seasons
In other words, reservations are the tradeoff that keeps the ticket open-ended.
Why Annual Pass Comparisons Create Confusion
A lot of the online confusion comes from comparing the 2026 Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket to Annual Passes.
The 2026 Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket allows multiple visits over a long time period, so you’ll see it called things like “Disney military pass” or “military annual pass” in Facebook groups and forums.
But they are not Annual Passes, and Disney does not manage them the same way. Annual Passholders have their own rule set, pricing structure, and capacity tracking model.
When families assume military tickets work like Annual Passes, park reservation rules are often where frustration starts.
Why Resort Stays Can Change the Rules
If park reservations exist to help Disney predict attendance, resort stays give Disney exactly that information. When you have a qualifying resort hotel reservation linked, Disney can see:
- Your arrival and departure dates
- How many people are in your party
- The length of your stay
That’s why guests with a linked Disney-owned or select resort hotel reservation can often book park reservations for their full stay—even when using military tickets.
This includes select resorts that qualify, such as Shades of Green (along with the Swan, Dolphin, and Swan Reserve).
It isn’t just a perk—it’s that a resort reservation gives Disney a planning certainty.
Myth vs Reality
Myth: “Disney ended park reservations, so military tickets shouldn’t need them.”
Reality: Disney ended reservations for most date-based tickets. Military promotional tickets are handled differently and still require reservations.
Myth: “The Military Salute ticket is basically an annual pass.”
Reality: It’s not an Annual Pass. It’s a promotional ticket with its own rules, including required park reservations.
Myth: “Park Hopper means I don’t need a reservation.”
Reality: Park Hopper still requires you to reserve a starting park for the day.
Myth: “Disney is restricting military families.”
Reality: Reservations are the system that allows Disney to offer a flexible, open-ended military ticket without switching it to date-based pricing or adding heavy restrictions.
Myth: “A hotel stay doesn’t matter for reservations.”
Reality: A linked Disney or select resort stay (including Shades of Green) can allow reservations for the full length of your stay instead of being limited to holding five at a time.
The Bottom Line
Disney still requires park reservations for military tickets because these tickets are open-ended and not date-based. Disney needs attendance visibility, and reservations are what allow the Military Salute ticket to stay flexible without adding harsher restrictions.
Once you understand the “why,” the rule makes a lot more sense—and planning becomes much easier.
