    • Do you have to be present to use Disney military tickets?
    • Can friends and extended family use Disney military tickets?
    • How to figure out how many Disney military tickets you can buy

This is one of the most confusing parts of Disney military ticket planning, because people often lump all military Disney tickets together as if they work the same way.

They do not!

There are really two different categories of military Disney tickets at Walt Disney World and Disneyland:

  • Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets
  • Regular Military Theme Park Tickets

And the rules are very different depending on which one you are buying.

That means the answer to questions like:

  • How many can I buy?
  • Who has to be present?
  • Can I buy for friends or extended family?
  • Does the military member have to use one?

…depends entirely on the ticket type.

Let’s break it down clearly.

The Short Answer

If you are talking about Disney Military Promotional Tickets, the discounted Military Salute-style tickets, there is a 6-ticket limit per eligible service member, and one of those tickets must be used by the eligible service member or spouse.

If the eligible service member already has a valid Walt Disney World Annual Pass, that maximum drops to 5 promotional tickets, because the service member can use the Annual Pass instead of needing one of the Salute tickets.

If you are talking about the regular Walt Disney World Military Theme Park Tickets, that is a different category.

So the “6 ticket limit” is real, but it applies to the promotional / Salute ticket side, not to all military Disney tickets.

First: Know Which Military Ticket You’re Talking About

This is the key distinction.

1. Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets

These are the specially priced promotional tickets, such as the Disney Armed Forces Salute or Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Tickets. These are a temporary discount!

Disney’s rule is that no more than 6 total promotional tickets may be purchased per eligible service member.

One of those tickets must be used by the eligible service member.

2. Regular Military Theme Park Tickets

These are the non-promotional military tickets sold in a variety of lengths. These are a permanent discount!

They are a different ticket category with different rules.

That is a huge difference.

For Disney’s military promotional Salute tickets, the rule is that no more than a total of 6 tickets may be purchased per eligible service member. The spouse can purchase and use the Salute tickets in place of the member if the member can not go; however, this changes the ticket limit to 5, as Disney says, “One ticket must be reserved for the member.”

The ticket allocation is for the service member only. In other words, the member and spouse do not get separate sets of six.

Another Exception if the Service Member Has an Annual Pass

This is the part many people miss.

If the eligible service member or spouse has a valid Annual Pass at the time the promotional ticket is used, then the eligible service member or spouse does not have to buy one of the promotional tickets for their own use.

But in this situation, the maximum number of promotional tickets again drops to 5 because “One ticket must be reserved for the member.”

Who Has to Use One of the Promotional Tickets?

For the promotional / Salute tickets, one of the tickets must be used by:

  • the eligible service member, or
  • the eligible spouse

That means you cannot just buy six promotional tickets for six other people while the eligible member or spouse stays home.

One of the biggest misunderstandings is that people think the military member only has to buy the tickets. That is not enough on the promo side.

One of those tickets must actually be used by the eligible service member or spouse, unless that person is using a valid Annual Pass instead, in which case the promo limit becomes five.

Who Has to Be Present for Promotional / Salute Tickets?

Walt Disney World Touchpoints replace Turnstiles

Walt Disney World Touchpoints

This is where “who has to be present” matters most.

The eligible service member or spouse is not just the buyer. They are part of the actual usage rules for these tickets.

And because one of the promotional tickets must be used by them, this is not a set of tickets you can simply hand off to an unrelated group while the eligible person does not participate.

Also important: Disney’s promotional military tickets require park reservations, which adds another layer of planning on top of the ID and usage rules.

Can Friends and Extended Family Use Promotional / Salute Tickets?

Yes, but with limits.

These tickets can be used by other family members and friends.

But the key restriction still applies:

The Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets may be purchased for anyone the member likes, but one of those tickets must still be used by the eligible service member or spouse

So the short version is:

Yes, others can use them.

No, you cannot buy the full allotment just for other people while the eligible person sits it out.

What About the Regular Military Theme Park Tickets?

Shades of Green Attraction Ticket Office

This is where the rules loosen up quite a bit.

The regular Disney Military Theme Park Tickets are a different, non-promotional ticket category. These are the original/permanent military ticket discount!

This is one reason they can be such an important option for:

  • larger families
  • longer trips
  • veterans using the broader Equal Access Act eligibility
  • DoD civilians who do not qualify for the promotional Salute tickets

Who Has to Be Present with the Regular Military Theme Park Tickets?

This is where the biggest practical difference shows up.

Because these are non-promotional tickets, the rules function much more like regular Disney admission than the promotional Salute tickets do.

So while the eligible person is the one who qualifies to purchase them, this category does not carry the same published 6-ticket cap or the same “one of the tickets must be used by the eligible member/spouse” rule that applies to the promotional tickets.

So to put it very clearly: The member or spouse may buy any number of the Military Theme Park Tickets for anyone that they choose to. And these tickets may be used without the member or spouse having one or being present!

The 6-Ticket Limit Confusion, Explained Simply

2016 Disney Armed Forces Salute

If you remember nothing else from this post, remember this:

The 6-Ticket Limit Applies to Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets

That includes the Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket.

For those tickets:

  • Max 6 per member
  • One must be used by the eligible service member or spouse (max becomes 5 if the spouse uses without th emember)
  • If that person is using an Annual Pass instead, max becomes 5

The 6-Ticket Limit Does Not Apply to Regular Military Theme Park Tickets

For those tickets:

  • Different rules apply
  • They are a separate, non-promotional ticket category

That is the cleanest way to keep it straight.

My Take

This is one of those Disney military topics where the details really matter.

If you are using Military Salute / promotional tickets, you need to think in terms of:

  • The 6-ticket cap
  • The member/spouse usage requirement
  • The 5-ticket cap if the eligible person already has an Annual Pass

If you are using regular Military Theme Park Tickets, the rules are much more flexible, and that is often where larger groups or longer trips make more sense.

That is why I always tell people not to ask, “How many military Disney tickets can I buy?”

The better question is:

Which military Disney ticket are you talking about?

The Bottom Line

The answer depends on the ticket type.

For Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets

  • usually 6 max
  • one must be used by the eligible service member or spouse
  • if the eligible person is using an Annual Pass instead, the promo max becomes 5

For Regular Military Theme Park Tickets

  • different rules apply
  • much more flexible for larger or longer trips

If you keep those two categories separate, the whole thing gets much easier to understand.

How many Disney military tickets can you buy?

It depends on the ticket type. For Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets, the limit is typically 6 per eligible service member. However, if the service member does not use one of the tickets, the limit drops to 5. Regular Military Theme Park Tickets do not have this limit.

Does the military member have to use one of the Disney Salute tickets?

Yes. One of the Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets must be used by the eligible service member or their spouse. If the member does not use one, the total number of tickets allowed drops to 5.

Can a spouse use military Disney tickets without the service member?

Yes. A spouse can purchase and use Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets without the service member present, but in that case the maximum number of tickets is reduced to 5 because one ticket must be reserved for the member.

Do Disney Military Theme Park Tickets have a purchase limit?

No. Regular Disney Military Theme Park Tickets do not have a set purchase limit and can be bought for anyone. These tickets are separate from the promotional Salute tickets and follow different rules.

Do you have to be present to use Disney military tickets?

For Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets, the service member or spouse must be involved in the purchase and usage rules. For regular Military Theme Park Tickets, the tickets can be used without the service member or spouse being present.

Can friends and extended family use Disney military tickets?

Yes. Both Disney Military Promotional / Salute Tickets and Military Theme Park Tickets can be used by friends and extended family. However, for Salute tickets, one must still be used by the eligible service member or spouse.

How to figure out how many Disney military tickets you can buy

  1. Determine which type of ticket you are buying: Military Promotional / Salute Tickets or Military Theme Park Tickets.
  2. If using Salute tickets, start with the 6-ticket limit per eligible service member.
  3. Check whether the service member or spouse will use one of the tickets. If not, reduce the limit to 5.
  4. If the service member or spouse has an Annual Pass and will use that instead, reduce the Salute ticket limit to 5.
  5. If you need more tickets or have a larger group, consider using Military Theme Park Tickets, which do not have the same purchase limits.
  6. Plan who will use each ticket to make sure you meet Disney’s usage rules before purchasing.
