There is a lot more to do at Walt Disney World resorts than just sleep between park days.
One of the biggest perks of staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel is that the experience does not stop when you leave the parks. In fact, some of the most relaxing and memorable parts of a Disney vacation can happen right at your resort. Whether you are planning a pool day, taking a mid-trip break, or just want to slow the pace a little, Disney resorts offer far more to do than many guests realize.
Some of these activities are included with your stay, while others come with an added fee. Some are found at nearly every Disney resort, and others are unique extras that help certain hotels stand out. Either way, building in time to enjoy your resort can add a lot of value to your vacation.
Resort Activities Available at Most Disney Resorts
While every Walt Disney World resort has its own personality, there are some core activities that show up again and again. These are the kinds of offerings that can make a rest day feel fun instead of boring and can give families something to do without needing another park ticket.
Pools and Poolside Activities
Every Disney resort has at least one pool, and many have more than one. These are not just basic hotel pools dropped onto the property as an afterthought. Disney leans hard into theming, and the result is that many resort pools feel like attractions of their own, especially for kids.
Depending on the resort, you may find zero-entry pools, splash areas, waterslides, and highly themed surroundings that match the overall story of the hotel. Throughout the day, the recreation team often hosts poolside activities that can include trivia, bingo, dance parties, and simple games that get kids and parents involved. If your family likes downtime but still wants a little structure and energy, this is often one of the easiest activities to enjoy.
- Trivia and bingo
- Dance parties
- Water games and family-friendly contests
- Themed pool environments at many resorts
Movies Under the Stars and Campfire Activities
One of the most classic Disney resort evening activities is Movies Under the Stars. These outdoor movie showings usually take place near the pool or on a lawn and are a simple, low-stress way to wind down after a busy day. You do not need Lightning Lane strategies, a dining reservation, or even much energy. Just show up, find a seat, and enjoy.
Many resorts also pair the movie with a campfire beforehand. That usually means complimentary marshmallows for roasting, with s’mores kits available for purchase if you want the full experience. It is a small thing, but it feels very “vacation,” especially when you are traveling with kids.
Arcades
Most Disney resorts also have an arcade, which can be a nice backup option on a rainy afternoon or during a slower part of the day. While arcades may not be the highlight of every family’s trip, they are another easy source of entertainment that does not require transportation or much planning.
The size of the arcade and available games varies by location, but you can generally expect a combination of classic games, newer machines, and prize-style games. For some families, this ends up being a fun little tradition at the resort each night.
Sports, Fitness, and Outdoor Recreation
Disney resorts are not just about lounging around, although there is certainly nothing wrong with that. Many also offer ways to stay active, especially at the Moderate and Deluxe levels. Fitness centers are common at those resorts, and several hotels also have scenic jogging trails that let you explore the grounds while getting in a walk or run.
Some resorts offer courts or open spaces for sports like basketball, tennis, and pickleball. These options are especially nice for longer stays when everyone starts to need a little space and movement outside the usual park routine.
Playgrounds
Playgrounds do not get nearly enough attention in Disney planning, but they can be a lifesaver for families with younger kids. If little ones need to burn off some energy after a meal or before bed, a resort playground can be just the thing. They are simple, but that is exactly why they work.
Shopping and Dining
Every Disney resort has at least a quick-service dining location and a gift shop, and these can be more useful than people expect. Yes, you will find Disney merchandise and resort souvenirs, but you will also usually find everyday items like sunscreen, snacks, drinks, and basic over-the-counter medicine.
Dining varies a lot by resort. Some hotels only offer the basics, while others have character meals, signature restaurants, lounges, or highly themed dining experiences. Even if you are not staying at a Deluxe resort, it can be worth visiting one for dinner and building in time to enjoy the atmosphere while you are there.
Unique and Deluxe-Level Resort Activities
This is where the differences between Disney resorts really become more noticeable. The higher the price point, the more likely you are to find recreation beyond the basics. That said, many of these activities are not limited only to guests staying there. In some cases, you can visit another resort and enjoy the activity even if you are sleeping somewhere else.
Electrical Water Pageant
If you are staying around Seven Seas Lagoon or Bay Lake, the Electrical Water Pageant is one of those old-school Disney touches that still feels special. This floating nighttime parade has been around for decades, and while it is much simpler than the big park spectaculars, that is part of its charm.
It is free, easy to watch, and a fun reminder that Disney resort evenings can have their own kind of magic. If you are at the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge area, or Contemporary, it is worth checking the nightly schedule.
Fireworks Viewing from Resorts
You do not always need a park ticket to enjoy Disney fireworks. A few resorts offer surprisingly good views, and in some cases, these can be a peaceful alternative to watching from inside the park crowds.
The Polynesian beach remains one of the best-known spots for Magic Kingdom fireworks, and the Grand Floridian and Contemporary can also offer strong viewing depending on your location.
Over at Disney’s Riviera Resort, the outdoor terrace at Topolino’s Terrace is a great place to catch EPCOT fireworks. Gran Destino Tower at Coronado Springs is another fun option, with views that include EPCOT on one side and, on the other, the Magic Kingdom in the distance. These views are not all equal, and some are better than others, but they can still make for a memorable evening, especially if you pair them with dinner or drinks.
Community Halls
Community Halls are one of the most overlooked Disney resort perks at the Disney Vacation Club resorts. These activity spaces often offer crafts, games, movies, and other low-key entertainment that work well on a non-park day.
Some activities are complimentary, while others require a small fee. Either way, they are worth checking if you are staying at or visiting a DVC property and want something fun that does not involve transportation or a reservation.
Fishing Excursions
Fishing is one of those Walt Disney World activities that surprises people when they first hear about it. Disney does offer guided fishing excursions, primarily on Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon, and these can be a great option for guests who want something peaceful and different from the usual vacation routine.
These are guided outings rather than casual “grab a pole and fish off the dock” experiences. Disney provides the boat, the equipment, and the guide, so it is a more polished and beginner-friendly option than many guests would expect. It is also catch-and-release.
Boat Rentals and Marinas
Disney’s waterways are part of what makes the property feel so large and varied, and renting a boat can be a fun way to enjoy a different side of the resort area. Pontoon boats are available at select marinas and are especially good for families or small groups who want a relaxed ride on the water.
At Fort Wilderness, guests can also find canoe and kayak rentals. Those options bring a more active, outdoorsy feel and fit especially well with the campground setting. While the old Sea Raycer rentals were once a popular option, those have not returned, so current boating choices lean more toward sightseeing and relaxation than speed.
Bike and Surrey Rentals
Bike rentals are another underrated way to slow down and enjoy your surroundings. Resorts like BoardWalk, Old Key West, Caribbean Beach, Fort Wilderness, and Port Orleans have all been known for this kind of recreation, and it can be a fun way to explore the grounds beyond the usual walkway from your room to the bus stop.
Surrey bikes are especially fun for families because they turn a simple ride into something a little silly and memorable. This is one of those activities that may not make the planning spreadsheet ahead of time, but often ends up being a trip favorite once you do it.
Horses and Tri-Circle-D Ranch
Fort Wilderness offers one of the most distinctive non-park experiences at Walt Disney World. Tri-Circle-D Ranch gives guests a chance to enjoy Disney’s equestrian side, and that can mean more than many people expect.
Depending on age and comfort level, guests may be able to enjoy trail rides, pony rides, carriage rides, or wagon rides. Even just visiting to see the horses can be worthwhile, especially if your family likes animals or wants a break from the more polished resort environments elsewhere on property.
Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides at Port Orleans
If you are looking for something a little more relaxed and memorable in the evening, the horse-drawn carriage rides at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside are a great option. This is one of those classic Disney experiences that feels simple on the surface but ends up being a highlight for many guests.
The carriage rides follow scenic paths along the Sassagoula River and through the resort’s quiet, tree-lined grounds. It is a peaceful contrast to the parks and a nice way to slow things down, especially after a busy day.
Carriages can accommodate small groups, making this a great choice for couples, families, or even a small group looking to share the experience. Reservations are recommended, and this is a paid activity.
While the experience itself is not long, it is one of those moments that really adds to the overall feel of a Disney vacation—something a little different, a little quieter, and easy to enjoy.
Animal Viewing and Bead Activities at Animal Kingdom Lodge
Animal Kingdom Lodge is in a category of its own when it comes to resort activities. The savanna viewing areas are a major draw all by themselves, giving guests the chance to see giraffes, zebras, and other animals right from the resort.
For a more in-depth and truly unique experience, Animal Kingdom Lodge also offers a paid nighttime safari. Using night vision equipment, guests can head out onto the savanna after dark in a vehicle with a guide to observe animals in a completely different environment. It is a small-group, guided experience and one of the most unique “behind-the-scenes” style activities available anywhere at Walt Disney World.
But one of the best free activities for kids is the bead collection experience, often called String of Memories. Children can participate in educational activities led by African Cultural Representatives and earn beads at different locations around Jambo House and Kidani Village.
These activities can involve learning about animals, African culture, or enrichment, and the beads become a fun souvenir tied directly to the experience.
It is a smart example of Disney doing what it often does best: turning learning into something interactive and memorable.
Free Resort Tours
Some Disney resorts also offer complimentary tours, and these are a great fit for guests who enjoy theming, storytelling, and the little details that make Disney resorts special. Wilderness Lodge is one of the best-known examples, with a tour that helps guests appreciate the resort’s architecture, inspiration, and design elements on a deeper level.
These tours are easy to miss if you do not know to look for them, so it is always worth asking at the front desk or checking the resort recreation schedule when you arrive.
Classes and Specialty Experiences
At select resorts, Disney also offers more hands-on classes and specialty experiences. Coronado Springs is especially known for these, including Sangria University and mosaic-style art activities. These come with an extra fee, but they can be a fun splurge for adults or for guests looking for something beyond the standard resort schedule.
These are the kinds of activities that work especially well on a rest day or arrival day, when you want something memorable but not exhausting.
Live Music and Evening Atmosphere
Some resorts also shine simply because of their atmosphere at night. The Grand Floridian no longer has the old orchestra, but it still often features a lobby pianist, which helps maintain that elegant, relaxed feel in the evenings. The Polynesian and a few other resorts also benefit from outdoor music, lounge energy, or simply a setting that feels especially enjoyable after dark.
Not every “activity” has to be scheduled. Sometimes the best resort experience is just finding a good seat, ordering a drink, and taking in the setting.
Spa and Wellness
Select Deluxe resorts offer spa and wellness options, which can be especially appealing on adult trips or longer stays. If part of your goal is to make your Disney vacation feel more like an actual vacation and not just a sprint from one thing to the next, this can be a worthwhile way to slow things down.
Golf and Mini Golf
Golf does not always come to mind first when people think about Walt Disney World, but it is very much part of the resort experience. Disney has championship golf courses as well as mini golf, giving guests a couple of different ways to build some non-park recreation into the trip.
For some families, mini golf can be a fun arrival-day or departure-day activity, while full golf may appeal more to adults looking to mix Disney with something familiar and relaxing.
Always Check the Daily Recreation Schedule
If there is one tip that ties all of this together, it is this: always check your resort’s daily recreation schedule. This is where you will find the actual times for pool games, campfires, movies, bead activities, tours, crafts, and other limited offerings.
These schedules are often posted near the lobby or pool and may also appear in the My Disney Experience app. If you do not check, you can easily miss some of the best included activities at your resort.
Final Thoughts
It is easy to think of your Walt Disney World resort as just the place you return to after the parks. But in many cases, the resort is part of the vacation, not just the backdrop for it.
From campfires and outdoor movies to fireworks views, bead activities, tours, fishing, and boating, Disney resorts offer a lot more to do than many guests expect. Some of these activities are simple, some are unique, and some are worth going out of your way for. But together, they help make a Disney vacation feel more complete.
If you build in even a little time to enjoy your resort, you may find that some of your favorite memories happen outside the parks.
