The Office at Lamplight Lounge. The Lounge’s private deck is where the life preserver hangs, and the Office is to the left between the deck and the umbrella.

During our Disneyland family vacation last June, while staying at Disney’s Grand Californian on our DVC points, we were treated to a truly rare Pixie Dust surprise. What began as a simple lunch reservation at Lamplight Lounge turned into one of the most unforgettable Disney dining experiences we’ve ever had. We were seated in The Office — a secret room that most guests will never even know exists!

What is The Office?

Hidden inside the downstairs dining room of Lamplight Lounge, The Office is a private space originally created for Disney Imagineers and Pixar illustrators when they visit the park. It’s accessed through a vault-style door, tucked beyond the main dining area, and opens into a cozy hideaway filled with Pixar artwork, sketches, and playful touches. The room even has its own private patio overlooking Paradise Bay and the launch of the Incredicoaster.

Unlike a standard table, you can’t request or reserve The Office — seating there is pure chance, a sprinkle of Pixie Dust when the stars align. And on this trip, that’s exactly what happened to us!

How We Got Seated There

I had made all our dining reservations well in advance, but Lamplight Lounge wouldn’t allow a booking for our party of seven — only six or fewer. We debated making two reservations (four and three), but worried about being split up. Instead, I booked for six and planned to arrive early to ask for help.

We checked in about 30 minutes before our reservation time and asked if all seven of us could be seated together. The hostess said she’d look into it. She called downstairs, and — to our relief — said they could accommodate us.

We were taken through the door at the far left in this pic.

We descended to the main dining room with a second hostess, who led us all the way to the far end of the dining room, then turned left into what looked like an unfinished cast member area with stacked up extra furniture and serving items. A right turn took us into a hallway with that unmistakable vault door at the end.

And this is what we saw at first. The Vault Door is behind to the right!

Opening the Vault

Our two granddaughters were invited to “unlock” the door by spinning the big metal wheels (pure showmanship and pure joy). With everyone grinning, the vault door swung open… and just like that, we stepped into another world.

Inside The Office

The room is intimate and private, ideal for one family or a small group. Booth-style seating lines the walls, while whimsical Pixar artwork and animator sketches provide a creative, clubhouse feel. The atmosphere instantly shifts from the lively dining room to cozy and exclusive.

There is a low, round side table and comfy chairs just perfect for a casual drink or board game (which are provided!). Our granddaughters had fun playing the games.

The walls are adorned by sketches by the Disney royalty who have visited (mostly self-portraits), and it’s so interesting to check them out.

Coasters signed by Disney Artists and Imagineers

Just beyond the room is a small private patio with stellar views of Paradise Bay. You can watch the Incredicoaster launches and soak in the lagoon scenery — it feels like your own little slice of Disney California Adventure, away from the crowds yet still in the heart of it.

Our Meal and the Magic

The food and drinks at Lamplight Lounge are always a hit, but enjoying them in The Office made everything feel even more special. The service had that extra layer of warmth and delight — Cast Members clearly understood how magical this seating was for our family.

We enjoyed a wide range of lunch items from the restaurant’s menu (the regular menu is served in the Office), including the Potato Skins appetizer, Herb-roasted Chicken, Burgers, and a fabulous Pork Chop, as well as several drinks per adult. We didn’t want the experience to end, and the cast made it clear that we could spend as much time as we liked with no rush!

Why This Was So Special

Being seated in The Office transformed an ordinary lunch into the highlight of our trip. Watching our granddaughters “open” the vault, relaxing in a secret Pixar space, and sharing private bay views together created a memory we’ll never forget.

It’s the kind of Pixie Dust that reminds you why Disney trips are so meaningful across generations.

Tips for Other Guests

  • You can’t reserve The Office. Seating is rare and completely at the Cast Members’ discretion.
  • Larger parties are sometimes a fit, but there’s no guarantee.
  • There is a maximum of 13 guests allowed in the Office
  • Be courteous and hopeful at check-in — the surprise is part of the magic.
  • If it happens, savor every minute!

Wrap-Up / Final Thoughts

Lamplight Lounge is a must-do even in the regular dining room, with creative food, drinks, and Pixar storytelling throughout. But The Office takes it to another level — intimate, surprising, and unforgettable. For our family, it was the moment that turned a great Disneyland vacation into a legendary one.
