What Guests Love About Shades of Green — And the Tradeoffs You Should Know

7 July 2026 by Steve Bell Leave a Comment

Shades of Green is one of the most unique places to stay at Walt Disney World, but it is also one of the most misunderstood.

Some military families absolutely love it. Some are surprised by parts of the experience. And some arrive with expectations that do not quite match how the resort actually works.

That is why Military Disney Tips has spent years collecting feedback from military families who have stayed at Shades of Green. Instead of simply asking whether guests liked the resort, the Military Disney Tips Research Project looks for patterns: what guests consistently praised, what surprised them, what caused frustration, and what future guests should understand before booking.

Military Disney Tips Research Project

This article is based on nearly a decade of Military Disney Tips reader surveys and guest feedback from military families who have stayed at Shades of Green.

Rather than simply repeating resort information, this article explains what guests consistently experienced — and what that means for your vacation planning.

The short version?

Guests consistently praise Shades of Green for its large rooms, practical family layout, peaceful setting, military atmosphere, and strong overall value. But the resort also comes with tradeoffs, especially around transportation, dining convenience, walking distances, and expectations.

So instead of asking, “Is Shades of Green good?” the better question is:

Is Shades of Green the right fit for the way your family vacations?

The Best Things Guests Love About Shades of Green

1. The Rooms Are Much Larger Than Many Guests Expect

The strongest theme in the Military Disney Tips Research Project is room size.

Again and again, military families described Shades of Green rooms as spacious, comfortable, and more practical than expected. That matters because Walt Disney World vacations are not normal hotel stays. Families come back to the room with backpacks, souvenirs, strollers, rain gear, groceries, laundry, tired kids, and tired adults.

A larger room changes the way the vacation feels.

It gives everyone more breathing room. It makes unpacking easier. It helps families stay organized. It gives kids space to spread out. It makes afternoon breaks more relaxing. And after several long park days, that extra space becomes more valuable than many first-time guests realize.

Military Disney Tips Research Project: Room size is one of the most consistently praised parts of the Shades of Green experience. Guests rarely talk about square footage as a number. They talk about what the space does for their vacation.

Steve’s Perspective: This is one of the biggest reasons I think Shades of Green works so well for military families. The rooms are not trying to be heavily themed Disney rooms. They are trying to be practical, comfortable rooms that make a family vacation easier. For many families, that is exactly what they need.

2. Guests Value Functionality More Than Luxury

Shades of Green – Split Bath – Palm Wing

One of the most interesting findings from the research is that military families rarely describe Shades of Green rooms in luxury-hotel terms.

That is not a criticism. It is actually the point.

Guests praise the rooms because they are useful. They are large. They are comfortable. They work well for real family travel. The value is not chandeliers, dramatic theming, or deluxe resort styling. The value is having a room that helps your family function better during a busy Walt Disney World vacation.

That means Shades of Green is especially appealing to families who care more about space, practicality, and comfort than Disney theming inside the room.

If you want a highly themed Disney bubble experience, a Disney resort may fit you better. If you want a large, calm, practical room at a military-only resort with strong vacation value, Shades of Green deserves serious consideration.

3. Many Guests Say the Rooms Are Better Than Expected

Expectations play a huge role in how families feel about Shades of Green.

Shades of Green Standard Room

Some first-time guests arrive expecting something closer to basic government lodging. Then they walk into a large renovated room at a resort located right on Walt Disney World property, and the experience feels better than expected.

That “better than expected” reaction appears repeatedly in guest feedback.

This is also why outdated online comments can create confusion. Older comments about dated rooms reflected earlier conditions before the completed guest room renovations. Those comments were valid at the time, but they do not tell the full story of what guests experience today.

Military Disney Tips Research Project: Historical comments about dated rooms primarily reflect the pre-renovation era. Current planning guidance should focus more on room size, layout, functionality, and remaining room configuration differences.

What This Means for Your Trip: Do not judge Shades of Green only by older reviews or outdated room photos. The more useful question is whether the current room experience fits your family’s needs.

4. The Resort Feels Calm Compared with Disney Resorts

Many guests appreciate that Shades of Green feels quieter and less hectic than many Disney resort hotels.

That can be a major benefit after long park days.

Shades of Green does not have oversized Disney characters everywhere (Just one Mickey in the lobby). It does not have the same level of Disney theming. It does not feel like a Value Resort food court at breakfast or a monorail resort lobby during fireworks crowds.

For some families, that is a negative.

For others, it is exactly why they love it.

After a full day at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom, returning to a quieter resort can feel like a reset. That peaceful atmosphere is one of the reasons many repeat guests continue choosing Shades of Green even when they could stay elsewhere.

5. The Military Atmosphere Matters

Shades of Green is not just another hotel near Disney World. It is an Armed Forces Recreation Center serving eligible military members, retirees, veterans in specific eligibility periods, DoD civilians, and other authorized guests.

That creates a different atmosphere!

For many families, being surrounded by other military-connected guests adds comfort and familiarity. People understand military schedules, deployments, large family trips, multi-generational travel, retired military travelers, and the reality that a Disney vacation may be a major family milestone.

That does not mean every guest chooses Shades of Green because of the military atmosphere. But for many, it quietly adds to the experience.

Steve’s Perspective: I think this is one of the underappreciated parts of staying there. The military connection is not just a discount category. It shapes the feel of the resort. I find that guests at Shades of Green are much friendlier to each other, as we’re all part of the same big family.

6. The Value Is About More Than the Nightly Rate

Shades of Green is often discussed as a money-saving option, and price matters. But the research suggests guests think about value more broadly than price alone.

The value comes from what the room and resort make possible.

For example, a larger room may make a longer stay more comfortable. A quieter resort may make rest easier. A practical layout may reduce daily frustration. Access to military ticket sales on site can simplify planning. Eligibility-based room rates can make staying on Walt Disney World property more realistic for families who might otherwise stay off property.

That is different from simply saying, “Shades is cheaper.”

The better question is whether Shades of Green gives your family a better overall vacation for the money you spend.

7. Shades of Green Can Feel Like a Hidden Deluxe-Level Advantage

Shades of Green is not a Disney Deluxe Resort, but it does sit in a very unusual position.

You are staying on Walt Disney World property, near the Magic Kingdom resort area, with large rooms and access to select Disney resort guest benefits. Depending on current Disney rules and your travel dates, that can include valuable perks such as Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Hours.

That combination is why many military families see Shades of Green as one of the best lodging values at Walt Disney World.

STEVE NOTE: Just the Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours alone can add so much to your vacation!

For the right family, Shades of Green can deliver a lot of practical vacation value without the Disney Deluxe Resort price tag.

The Tradeoffs Guests Wish They Understood Before Booking

Now let’s talk about the other side.

The most important thing to understand is that the common complaints about Shades of Green are not always “bad things.” Many are tradeoffs.

Transportation is not automatically bad. It is different.

Dining is not automatically bad. It requires different planning.

The resort is not too large for everyone. But walking distances matter more for some families than others.

Understanding these tradeoffs before you book is the key to being happy with your stay.

1. Transportation Works Differently Than Disney Transportation

This is probably the biggest expectation-setting issue for first-time Shades of Green guests.

Shades of Green Transportation Options

Shades of Green transportation is not the same as Disney resort bus transportation.

For Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, Shades of Green transportation uses the Transportation and Ticket Center. From there, you continue to Magic Kingdom by monorail or ferry, or to EPCOT by monorail when operating. For Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Shades of Green operates bus transportation directly to those parks.

That system can work well, but it requires understanding.

If you expect the same transportation pattern as a Disney resort, you may be frustrated. If you plan for the TTC connection and build in time, the system becomes much easier to manage.

What This Means for Your Trip: Families with strollers, mobility concerns, tight dining reservations, or strong midday break plans should think carefully about transportation before booking.

2. Dining Requires More Planning Than Some Guests Expect

Shades of Green has several dining options, and some are popular with guests. But the resort does not function like a Disney resort with multiple heavily themed restaurants and easy Disney transportation links to every dining area.

Shades of Green Resort Evergreen's Sports Bar Review

Shades of Green’s Evergreens

That matters because dining satisfaction is not only about food quality.

It is also about convenience.

A restaurant may be good, but if your family returns late from the parks, has tired kids, or does not want to deal with transportation again, your actual dining choices narrow quickly.

This is why practical dining options matter so much at Shades of Green. Quick breakfast, grab-and-go meals, coffee, snacks, and easy evening choices may end up being more important than guests expect before arrival.

What I’d Do: Before staying at Shades of Green, I would plan which meals I expect to eat at the resort, which meals I expect to eat in the parks, and which nights I may want something easy after a long day.

3. Walking Distances Can Matter

Shades of Green rooms are spacious, but the resort itself is also spread out enough that location can matter.

Shades of Green's Discounts

The Long Palm Wing (Pic from the patio at the rear of the Lobby)

This is especially true for guests with mobility concerns, families with small children, grandparents, or anyone who plans to move frequently between the room, lobby, bus area, restaurants, and pools.

The research does not support saying one guest room wing is always better than the other. That kind of universal recommendation is too simple.

The better question is what your family needs.

Do you want to reduce walking? Do you care most about lobby access? Are you planning pool time? Do you have mobility limitations? Will you be coming and going often?

Those questions matter more than chasing the internet’s favorite room request.

Military Disney Tips Research Project: Guest room wing discussions are frequently overstated. The best room location depends more on your family’s vacation style than on a universal “best wing.”

4. Room Requests Are Useful Only When They Solve a Problem

Room requests can help, but they are not magic.

The most useful room requests solve a real planning problem. For example, a family with mobility concerns may benefit from requesting a location that reduces walking. A family planning lots of pool time may prioritize a different area. A family focused on transportation convenience may have another priority.

But requesting a specific area simply because someone online said it was “best” may not improve your trip.

One Mistake I See: Families sometimes start with the room request instead of the vacation need. Start by asking, “What problem am I trying to solve?” Then make the request based on that answer.

5. The Lack of Heavy Disney Theming Is a Plus for Some Families and a Minus for Others

Shades of Green does not feel like Art of Animation, Polynesian Village Resort, Wilderness Lodge, or the Contemporary.

It feels like Shades of Green.

That sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important expectation-setting points.

If your dream Disney vacation includes waking up surrounded by Disney theming, hearing Disney music in the lobby, seeing Disney characters in the décor, and feeling fully inside the Disney bubble, a Disney resort may make you happier.

If your priority is space, calm, value, and military eligibility, Shades of Green may be a better fit.

Neither choice is wrong. They are different vacation styles.

6. Older Reviews Can Be Misleading Without Context

Older Shades of Green reviews are not useless. Many are historically accurate.

Pre-Renovation Room

But they need context.

Comments about dated rooms, older furnishings, and cosmetic condition often came from the pre-renovation period. Since then, both guest room wings have been renovated, which changed the room discussion.

Today, the more useful questions are about room layout, bathroom configuration, walking distance, transportation habits, and whether the resort fits your family’s priorities.

What This Means for Your Trip: When reading older comments online, pay attention to when the guest stayed. A review from before the room renovations should not carry the same weight as current guest feedback.

Who Should Stay at Shades of Green?

Shades of Green is a strong choice for many military families, but it is not the perfect choice for every trip.

Shades of Green Is a Great Fit If…

  • You value larger rooms and practical family space.
  • You want a calmer resort environment after long park days.
  • You qualify for Shades of Green and want strong lodging value on Walt Disney World property.
  • You are comfortable learning a transportation system that differs from Disney resort buses.
  • You care more about functionality than heavy Disney theming.
  • You are planning a longer stay where extra room space will matter.
  • You want access to military ticket sales and a military-focused resort environment.

You May Prefer a Disney Resort If…

  • You want the full Disney resort theming experience.
  • You want Disney-operated transportation directly from your resort.
  • You want easier access to Disney resort restaurants and lounges.
  • You are taking a very short trip and convenience matters more than room size.
  • You do not want to think through TTC transfers or Shades-specific transportation routes.
  • You are booking primarily for the “Disney bubble” feeling.

Bottom Line: The Best Parts Are Real, But So Are the Tradeoffs

Magic Kingdom Fireworks from Shades of Green

Years of Military Disney Tips guest feedback confirm what many repeat guests already know: Shades of Green rooms are one of the resort’s biggest strengths. Military families consistently value the space, comfort, practicality, and overall vacation usefulness those rooms provide.

But the research also points to an important planning truth.

Shades of Green works best when guests understand what they are choosing.

You are choosing large rooms, strong value, a calmer setting, and a military-focused resort on Walt Disney World property.

You are also choosing a transportation system that works differently from Disney resorts, dining that requires more planning, and an experience that is less Disney-themed than Disney-owned hotels.

For many military families, that tradeoff is absolutely worth it.

For others, a Disney resort may be the better fit.

The goal is not to convince every family to stay at Shades of Green. The goal is to help you decide whether Shades of Green matches the vacation you actually want.

Steve Recommends

If your family values space, practicality, and a quieter place to recharge, Shades of Green should be high on your list. But do not book it only because someone said it is cheaper. Book it because the way the resort works matches the way your family actually vacations.

It is not the best fit for every family, especially those who want heavy Disney theming or Disney-operated resort transportation.

What do guests like most about Shades of Green?

Guests consistently praise the large rooms, practical family space, quiet atmosphere, military environment, and overall vacation value. Room size is one of the most frequently praised parts of the Shades of Green experience.

The biggest tradeoffs involve transportation, dining convenience, walking distances, and lower Disney theming compared with Disney-owned resorts. These are not dealbreakers for every family, but guests should understand them before booking.
