Prepare for a thrilling, prehistoric adventure as you race against time to save a dinosaur on DINOSAUR!
The DINOSAUR attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom originally opened on April 22, 1998, as Countdown to Extinction, offering guests a prehistoric adventure through the Late Cretaceous period. The ride was created to tie into the upcoming animated feature DINOSAUR scheduled for release in 2000. The ride was designed to be a thrilling experience, featuring a darkish, somewhat bumpy journey aboard Time Rovers as riders raced to save an Iguanodon from extinction just moments before a catastrophic asteroid impact.
The attraction changed its name to DINOSAUR in 2000 to align with the movie and the storyline of the ride mostly remained unchanged.

The Queue
As you enter the queue for DINOSAUR, you’ll find yourself stepping into the Dino Institute, a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to studying the ancient creatures of Earth’s past. The queue begins in a museum-like setting, with exhibits showcasing fossils, dinosaur skeletons, and scientific displays that provide fascinating insights into the world of dinosaurs.
As you move deeper into the queue, the atmosphere shifts, and you’ll enter the high-tech laboratory area where the real adventure begins. Monitors display video messages from Dr. Marsh and Dr. Seeker, the scientists who will guide you on your mission, building anticipation for the journey ahead.
The queue is mostly indoors, offering a cool, air-conditioned break from the Florida heat, and the detailed theming makes the wait an engaging part of the overall experience.
The Ride
DINOSAUR is an intense, dark ride that takes you on a thrilling journey back in time to the late Cretaceous period. Your mission, led by the slightly rogue Dr. Seeker, is to travel back in time to rescue an Iguanodon and bring it back to the present day.
However, things quickly go awry as your Time Rover vehicle encounters massive, animatronic dinosaurs, including the fearsome Carnotaurus, all while dodging meteors and other dangers. The ride is fast-paced, with sharp turns, sudden drops, and plenty of surprises that keep you on the edge of your seat. The combination of dark environments, lifelike dinosaurs, and intense motion makes DINOSAUR a thrilling and sometimes scary experience, especially for younger guests.
During the name change in 2000, some elements of the attraction were taken to the next level making the previous experience which had been fairly family-friendly, into a way more intense ride. The biggest changes that impacted the ride were dimming the lights and increasing the jerkiness of the ride vehicle a lot so that you can see very little as you hurl around the track jerking wildly. I liked the original version, the newer one not so much!
The Ride Vehicle
The ride vehicle, known as the Time Rover, is a rugged, all-terrain vehicle designed to transport you safely through the treacherous prehistoric landscape. Each vehicle seats up to 12 guests in rows of four, with individual lap bars to keep everyone secure during the bumpy ride. The Time Rover is designed to handle rough terrain, so expect a lot of jolts and jostles as it maneuvers through the dark and unpredictable environment. Boarding and exiting the vehicle is straightforward, though the ride’s intensity means you’ll want to make sure your belongings are securely stowed.
Rider Swap
Rider Swap is available at DINOSAUR, which is particularly useful given the ride’s intensity and dark theming. If you have younger children or members of your group who might not be up for the thrills, simply speak with a Cast Member at the entrance to arrange a Rider Swap. This allows everyone who wants to experience the ride to do so without waiting in the regular line twice.
Accessibility
DINOSAUR is accessible to guests with mobility challenges, though it requires a transfer from a wheelchair or scooter to the ride vehicle. The loading platform is level with the vehicle, and Cast Members are available to assist with the transfer process. Given the ride’s rough and intense nature, guests should be comfortable with the sudden movements and dark environments before boarding.
Height Requirement
Riders must be at least 40 inches tall to embark on this time-traveling adventure.

Closing
This ride will be closing in 2025 as DinoLand starts its transition into a Tropical Americas land called Pueblo Esperanza. This new Tropical Americas land will feature Encanto and Indiana Jones.
Walt Disney Imagineering is planning to reimagine DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park into a new land inspired by a region sometimes referred to as “tropical Americas.” As part of their research, Imagineers are looking at some of the most biodiverse areas on the planet in the regions just north and south of the equator in the Western Hemisphere – the northern part of South America, stretching up into Central America.
