Face the legendary Yeti and conquer the towering peaks of Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain!
The Queue
The adventure on Expedition Everest begins the moment you enter the queue, where you’ll find yourself in the small, remote village of Serka Zong at the base of the Forbidden Mountain. The queue is packed with rich details that immerse you in the story of your upcoming expedition.
You’ll pass through a series of themed areas, including a Tibetan monastery filled with prayer flags and sacred artifacts, and the offices of the Himalayan Escapes tour company, which is organizing your trek.
The queue also features a fascinating Yeti museum, showcasing evidence and artifacts related to the mythical creature that is said to inhabit the mountain. From photographs and sketches to alleged Yeti footprints, these exhibits build suspense as you prepare to board your train.
The queue is mostly shaded, with a mix of indoor and outdoor sections, offering a comfortable waiting experience while you soak in the detailed theming and story elements.
The Ride
Expedition Everest is a high-speed roller coaster that takes you on a thrilling journey through the Himalayas, where you’ll encounter the mysterious Yeti. The ride starts off gently as your train ascends the mountain, offering breathtaking views of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and beyond.
But things quickly take a turn as you reach a broken section of track, signaling that something is amiss. Suddenly, the train plummets backward into the darkness, twisting and turning through the mountain’s interior.
Be On the Lookout! During your Expedition Everest journey, keep an eye out for the infamous rock wall when the train comes to a stop where the track appears broken, just before your train begins its thrilling backward descent. This spot has become a quirky tradition for riders, with countless hair ties and bands tossed onto the rocky ledge over the years. Joe Rohde, the Imagineer who designed the ride has said, “More ritual behavior. The hair scrunchies! The hair tie thing at the top of Everest is Weird but also ritualistic. It violates the illusion of the scene, but it oddly parallels what people do at the top of a real Himalayan pass…which is to leave a rock. Obviously, someone started it, but what is significant is the huge number of people who follow along. What’s going on with that? It messes with the illusion of the fantasy place completely… However, it creates a very real interactive ceremony at the actual top of the highest point of the ride. I cannot condone this behavior partly because some poor person has to clean it up…but it does interest me.”
The highlight of the ride is an encounter with the Yeti itself, as the creature seems to lunge at you as you race by. Sadly, when the ride first opened, the Yeti was able to move and swing its arm toward riders. However, a few months later, this function stopped due to an unnamed malfunction. The animatronic Yeti is currently in what Disney calls “B-mode”, meaning it remains stationary and strobe lights are used to simulate movement. This has led some fans to call it “Disco Yeti.”Â
The ride combines intense drops, sharp turns, and surprising direction changes, making it one of the most exhilarating experiences in the park. The blend of storytelling, theming, and thrill elements makes Expedition Everest a must-ride for any adrenaline junkie.
The Ride Vehicle
The ride vehicle is designed to resemble an old, worn-out steam train, perfect for a rugged expedition through the mountains. Each train seats 34 guests in seven cars, with riders seated two across in a single row. The seats are equipped with individual lap bars that keep you secure during the high-speed portions and the backward section of the ride. The vehicles are well-padded, providing a comfortable ride despite the intense movements. Boarding and exiting the train is straightforward, though the excitement builds as soon as you sit down and pull the lap bar into place. The design of the vehicle and the track allow for smooth yet thrilling transitions between the different ride elements.
Single Rider
Expedition Everest features a Single Rider Line, giving solo travelers a chance to experience the adventure more quickly by filling available seats alongside other groups. It’s an efficient way to encounter the Yeti without waiting in the standard queue.
Rider Swap
Rider Swap is available at Expedition Everest, which is great for families with younger children or anyone who might not be up for the high-speed thrills. Just let a Cast Member know at the entrance, and they’ll assist you with the Rider Swap process, ensuring that everyone who wants to ride can do so without a long wait.
Accessibility
Expedition Everest is accessible to guests with mobility challenges, though it requires a transfer from a wheelchair or scooter to the ride vehicle. The loading platform is level with the train, and Cast Members are available to assist with the transfer as needed. Due to the intensity of the ride, guests should be comfortable with the fast movements and sudden changes in direction before boarding.
Height Requirement
Riders must be at least 44 inches tall to brave the Forbidden Mountain.
