Build your own custom droid and bring a piece of the galaxy home with you.
Location
📍 Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Disney’s Hollywood Studios
You’ll find Droid Depot tucked into the bustling Black Spire Outpost of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s located near the stairs leading down from Ronto Roasters, next to Savi’s Workshop.
The entrance is unmistakable once you spot the stacks of droid parts and glowing signage overhead. This is the center of droid-building activity on Batuu—and a major draw for Star Wars fans of all ages.
In years past, you had to make a reservation to build and purchase your droid well ahead of time; this is now a walk-in experience!
Experience
Droid Depot isn’t just a store—it’s an interactive experience that lets you build your own custom astromech droid, choosing between two iconic styles:
- R-Series (like R2-D2)
- BB-Series (like BB-8)
After checking in, you’ll enter a workshop filled with moving parts, mechanical sounds, and the whirring of conveyor belts. You’ll pick out pieces from the belt, assemble them at a workstation, and bring your droid to life with the help of a friendly Cast Member.
Each droid is remote-controlled and equipped with Bluetooth technology that allows it to interact with other droids and respond to environments within Galaxy’s Edge. You can also add personality chips, sound features, and special accessories.
The whole process takes about 20–30 minutes, and families often make a memory out of the hands-on assembly.
Beyond the custom build, there’s also a retail space with pre-built droids, Star Wars gadgets, and accessories, including legacy characters like C-3PO and R2-D2.
Price & Add-Ons
The base price to build a custom droid is $119.99 plus tax (price subject to change), which includes:
- Your choice of R-Series or BB-Series droid parts
- The assembly experience
- A remote control
- A simple cardboard carry box with handle
Optional add-ons include:
- Droid Depot Backpack ($49.99) for easier transport
- Personality chips (which change your droid’s behavior and sounds)
- Droid accessories, such as custom decals or tools
💡 Military discounts are generally not accepted on custom-built items like these, even for Annual Passholders or Disney Visa cardholders.
If you’re flying home, note that Disney offers shipping services to send your droid directly from the depot to your home, or you can pack it as a carry-on (which many guests do without issue).
Reservations
Reservations for Droid Depot are strongly recommended, especially during busy travel seasons, holidays, and summer months. You can book up to 60 days in advance using the My Disney Experience app or Disney’s website.
Walk-up availability may exist on quieter days, but it’s rare—especially if you’re trying to coordinate with other Galaxy’s Edge plans like Savi’s Workshop or a Rise of the Resistance boarding group.
Pro tip: book your Droid Depot reservation in the morning so your new droid can interact with Batuu throughout the day!
Military Tips
If you’re visiting with your military family, Droid Depot can be one of the most memorable (and interactive) splurges of your trip. Here are some key things to know:
- This is a big-ticket item. At over $100 per droid, plus tax and accessories, it adds up fast. Consider building one per family or having siblings share if you’re looking to manage cost.
- No military discounts apply to this experience, as is common with many of Disney’s premium offerings.
- It’s a great reward for older kids or teens who are all-in on Star Wars—and equally fun for adults who want a personalized souvenir.
- Pairing this with Rise of the Resistance or a stop at Milk Stand and Kat Saka’s Kettle makes for a full Star Wars day.
- If you’re staying at Shades of Green or another resort, check to see if the box fits in your luggage or if you need to ship it separately.
Wrap-Up
The Droid Depot experience is a fun, immersive activity that truly lets you take part in the Star Wars story. For military families, it’s a splurge, but one that comes with a custom-built, remote-controlled friend to remember your visit by.
The droids are a hit with kids and adults alike—and continue to entertain long after your trip is over.
