Star Wars Launch Bay can be overlooked during your whirlwind tour of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as it’s not in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge..
After all, with the incredible rise of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, this quieter corner of the park doesn’t exactly scream for attention. But if you’re a fan of the original Star Wars films—or just looking for some air-conditioned bliss and a photo with Darth Vader—don’t count this one out just yet. Let’s take a closer look at what makes Star Wars Launch Bay a must-stop for many visitors (including yours truly!).
🚀 Location and Atmosphere
📍Hollywood Studios | Animation Courtyard
📍 Hollywood Studios – Animation Courtyard
You’ll find Star Wars Launch Bay tucked away in Animation Courtyard, just past the Disney Junior Dance Party and the entrance to the former Voyage of the Little Mermaid show (the upcoming The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure).
This building has gone through quite a few identities over the years (shoutout to anyone who remembers The Magic of Disney Animation!), but today it houses a galactic gallery dedicated to one of the most iconic movie franchises of all time.
Step inside and you’ll notice a major shift in tone from the immersive alien world of Batuu. Instead of feeling like you’ve been dropped into a Star Wars story, here you feel like you’re stepping into a Star Wars museum curated for fans, by fans. And yes—there’s glorious air conditioning.
🎨 The Outer Gallery: Star Wars Art Under the Stars (and Sun)
Before you even step inside Star Wars Launch Bay, there’s a surprising amount of content waiting just outside the doors. To the left as you enter is a covered but not air-conditioned area where you’ll find an open-air gallery featuring large-scale Star Wars artwork mounted along the walls.
This collection features:
- Massive movie posters from nearly every Star Wars film—including the original trilogy, prequels, and sequels
- Concept art and promotional images showcasing iconic characters, ships, and planets
- Behind-the-scenes production stills that longtime fans will appreciate
- Timeline-style panels that briefly walk you through the saga’s cinematic history
It’s easy to breeze past this area if you’re focused on getting inside to meet Darth Vader or find some A/C, but if you slow down, there’s a lot to appreciate here. It’s a bit like walking through a visual history of Star Wars—a great way to introduce newer fans to the galaxy or rekindle your own childhood memories.
Pro Tip: This is a great spot for quick, low-traffic photo ops.
🖼️ The Exhibits: A Museum of Star Wars Magic
Once inside, you’ll enter a walk-through gallery of replica props, costumes, models, and memorabilia from across the Star Wars saga. The bulk of the displays focus on the original trilogy and the prequels (my sweet spot!), with a few nods to the newer films as well.
Expect to see:
- A life-size Darth Vader costume
- A model of Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder
- Stormtrooper armor from various eras
- Detailed lightsaber replicas (yes, including Mace Windu’s purple beauty)
- Starfighter models, blasters, and more
It’s a feast for the eyes and a fun way to spark some “remember when…” conversations, especially if you grew up with the films.
🤝 Character Meet-and-Greets
This is hands-down the biggest reason to stop in—character greetings with major Star Wars icons.
As of my last visit, you could meet:
- Darth Vader – Yep, the Dark Lord of the Sith himself. Towering and intimidating, with a seriously cool backdrop.
- Chewbacca – The beloved Wookiee is always ready for a hug and a growl-filled selfie.
- BB-8 – The tiny astromech droid doesn’t talk much, but he beeps a lot and looks adorable doing it.
Each character has their own themed meet-and-greet area, and the lines are usually much shorter than the ones you’ll find for characters in other parts of the park. Disney PhotoPass photographers are stationed at each location, so you can get high-quality shots for your collection.
Pro Tip: Mornings and late afternoons tend to have the shortest waits.
🎮 Bonus: Star Wars Video Game Stations (Subject to Availability)
There’s a small corner of Launch Bay where guests can try out Star Wars video games on consoles. It’s easy to miss, but if you have a gamer in the group—or someone who needs a sit-down break—this is a low-key way to rest while still staying in the Star Wars world.
🛍️ Launch Bay Cargo: A Galaxy of Merchandise
Yes, there’s a gift shop (this is Disney, after all), but Launch Bay Cargo is more than just t-shirts and keychains.
Here you’ll find:
- High-end collectibles and replicas
- Customizable Star Wars name tags
- Apparel and accessories (some you won’t find in Galaxy’s Edge)
- Pins, toys, and droid-themed goodies
Before Galaxy’s Edge opened, this was the spot for Star Wars shopping. While it’s no longer the headliner, it’s still got plenty of unique finds and a quieter shopping experience than the bustling Black Spire Outpost Marketplace.
❄️ Why You Should Still Visit
Even with all the new Star Wars magic over in Galaxy’s Edge, Launch Bay has a charm of its own. Here’s why I still make a point to stop in:
- It’s indoors and blissfully air-conditioned—perfect during those sweltering summer afternoons.
- Classic Star Wars focus—if you’re more into Luke and Leia than Rey and Kylo, this is your spot.
- Easy access to major characters—no virtual queue, no fancy reservations, just walk up and say hello to Chewie.
- Great photo ops—the displays and character backdrops make for fantastic Instagram moments.
⌚ When to Visit
The best time to swing by Star Wars Launch Bay is usually midday, when the park is hottest and most crowded. Since it’s often overlooked, it doesn’t see the same rush as the rides in Galaxy’s Edge. That makes it an ideal way to slow down without sacrificing the fun.
🎞️ Is It Still Worth Visiting with Galaxy’s Edge Open?
Absolutely—and here’s why.
Galaxy’s Edge is an incredible experience, but it’s firmly planted in the new Star Wars canon. If you’re a fan of the originals or the prequels, Star Wars Launch Bay offers something Galaxy’s Edge doesn’t: a celebration of the saga as a whole, especially the earlier films.
And let’s be honest—meeting Darth Vader never gets old.
📸 Final Thoughts: A Quick Pit Stop or a Full Star Wars Fix?
Whether you’re a die-hard Star Wars fan or just looking for a fun, air-conditioned break in your day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Wars Launch Bay has something to offer. It’s not as flashy as Galaxy’s Edge, but it’s still a solid little corner of the galaxy—rich in nostalgia, full of photo ops, and packed with character (literally).
