The Swiss Family Treehouse is a beloved attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom that has captured the imagination of visitors for decades.
📍 Magic Kingdom | Adventureland
Located in the heart of Adventureland, this impressive treehouse is a must-see for anyone looking for a fun and unique experience.
Backstory
The Swiss Family Treehouse is based on the classic novel “The Swiss Family Robinson” by Johann David Wyss, which tells the story of a family that becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and must use their ingenuity to survive. In the story, the family builds an elaborate treehouse that serves as their home.
Walt Disney was a fan of this novel and the Walt Disney Company turned the book into a live action film in 1960. The movie was a huge success so the replica of their home was built into both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida.
About the Attraction
Visitors to the Swiss Family Treehouse will be amazed by the sheer size and detail of this impressive structure. The treehouse stands at over 60 feet tall and is made up of more than 300,000 plastic leaves, giving it a lush and verdant appearance. The treehouse is built around a massive artificial tree, with wooden platforms, bridges, and walkways winding their way up through the branches.
Visitors can take their time exploring the treehouse at their own pace, and there are plenty of benches and resting areas along the way.
Details
As visitors make their way through the Swiss Family Treehouse, they will encounter a wide variety of rooms and living spaces, each with its own unique features and furnishings.
The treehouse includes everything from a kitchen and dining area to a study, a music room, and even a bedroom with a hammock. Visitors can take in stunning views of Adventureland and the surrounding areas from the various lookout points and vantage spots throughout the treehouse.
One of the most memorable features of the Swiss Family Treehouse is the elaborate water system that the family has set up throughout the tree.
Visitors can see how the family collects and stores rainwater, and how they have set up a complex irrigation system to keep their plants and crops watered. The attention to detail in this aspect of the attraction is truly impressive and adds to the sense of realism and immersion that visitors experience.
Accessibility
Due to its multi-level structure with numerous stairs, Swiss Family Treehouse is not accessible for guests using wheelchairs or ECVs. Cast Members can provide additional information about the attraction’s layout for those interested in exploring its unique, tree-top setting. The Swiss Family Treehouse has 116 stairs.
This attraction is not handicap accessible. There is no way for a guest in a wheelchair or ECV to partake in this attraction because there are no ramps or elevators.
The Swiss Family Treehouse is also not a great attraction for those that struggle with heights or excessive stairs.
Changes in the Future?
While Disney has not said anything about changes coming to the Swiss Family Treehouse in the Magic Kingdom, we suspect that they would be coming based on the California version. The Swiss Family Treehouse in Disneyland was reimagined to be Tarzan’s Treehouse in 1999, and now it’s returning to its original theme.
Should You Venture Into The Swiss Family Treehouse?
The Swiss Family Treehouse is a low-key attraction that probably doesn’t find itself on most people’s must do list, but it is great for really busy days in the Magic Kingdom. This attraction doesn’t ever have long lines and there is so much to see!
Overall, the Swiss Family Treehouse is a fun attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Whether you are a fan of the classic novel that inspired it or simply looking for a fun and unique experience, this impressive treehouse is sure to delight and inspire. With the attention to detail, the Swiss Family Treehouse is a perfect example of the magic and wonder that Disney World is known for.
