Planning a Disney trip as a military family often brings up many questions!
One such question that I’m often asked is: Can we use our Military Star Card—or Disney gift cards—to cover vacation expenses?
The answer is a bit nuanced, so let’s sort it out.
️ Military Star Card
The Military Star Card, issued by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), is a powerful tool for military families:
- It is accepted at Shades of Green Disney’s Military Only Resort for room charges (including dining charged to your room in Shades of Green’s restaurants), the Ticket Sales Office, and the AAFES General Store.
- Requires that the initial room reservation be made with a major credit card, but you can swap to the Star Card at check-in.
- New cardmembers often receive a 10–20% first-day discount, and AAFES has recently offered 15–20% bonuses for opening/use within short enrollment windows.
- Earn 2% rewards on purchases, including room charges and tickets at Shades of Green. These are redeemed through AAFES reward cards.
PRO TIP: To take advantage of the First Day Discount, you have 2 options. 1. Use the Star card for your theme park tickets at the Shades of Green Ticket Office prior to your trip. 2. Purchase the tickets with another payment method and use the Star Card at check-out for your room and any dining purchases made at the resort. You’ll need to determine which will yield bigger savings based on the number of tickets and the length of stay.
What you can’t use at Shades of Green
Disney Gift Cards can’t be used at Shades of Green; they can only be used for purchases at Disney-owned locations.

You Can Save by Buying Disney Gift Cards at a Discount
Yes—military families can stack up even more savings by purchasing discounted Disney gift cards from select retailers! Buy them over the weeks and months prior to your vacation. This is one of the easiest and most underrated ways to stretch your Disney budget.
Here’s how:
- Sam’s Club: Often sells Disney gift cards at around a 4–5% discount, especially in $500 bulk bundles. (Membership required) I buy mine here!
- Target: RedCard holders get 5% off Disney gift card purchases—whether in-store or online.
- Best Buy: Occasionally offers bonus promotions or discounts on Disney gift cards, especially around the holidays or during special sales events.
You can use these gift cards toward:
- Park tickets (if purchased directly through Disney). Not recommended for the military community due to our discounted options!
- Dining inside the parks, Disney Springs, and at Disney Resort hotels
- Souvenirs and merchandise
- Hotel charges at Disney-owned resorts (note: not accepted at Shades of Green)
