Disney’s Old Key West Resort is the oldest Disney Vacation Club property!
This resort dates back to the beginning of the DVC concept. It opened in 1991 as the first and only Disney Vacation Club Resort. At the time, it was called The Vacation Club Resort, it was renamed to Old Key West in January 1996, just before the BoardWalk Villas opened in July of that year.
Old Key West is a very large, spread-out resort, with many sections quite a distance from the lobby and main area.

Old Key West’s Hospitality House Area, consisting of the lobby, restaurants, bar, and main pool, like the actual Key West, has a relaxed feel. It feels isolated from the rest of Disney World, and it is.
But as mentioned, a very large portion of the resort is a long walk from the Hospitality House, so you’ll probably want to use the bus. Just jump on any bus, no matter the destination, as the Hospitality House is the last stop before going off-property. Getting back to your building may require multiple stops. We’ve found this to be a big turnoff for Key West for us!
Unless you want to spend lots of time chilling in the main area of the resort, I might recommend staying elsewhere.
We do love Olivias! Always great food and service!
Let’s face it, Old Key West is a moderate resort for a deluxe price. While it has its die-hard fans (owners) in the DVC community, it is big and spread way out like the moderates; room entry doors are external, and you have the parking lot and road right out your door. The food service options are lacking (in level and variety) when compared with the other deluxes. Oliveia’s is fantastic, but the tiny counter service location with no seating and the 3 seat bar are frankly sad.
We also have a huge issue with the drapes and blinds in the Old Key West rooms. If you like a dark room to sleep in, this resort is not for you! The cloth-covered blinds on the balcony/patio doors are 2 to 3 inches away from the glass with large gaps on all sides, letting all light right around the top, sides, and bottom. The pull chain to lower and raise them is awful. When you give as a long pull as you can on the very short chain, the blind moves an inch, and it seems like it takes several minutes to get each one up or down, it seems like 35 pulls on the chain for each blind!
The front window drapes are also too far out from the wall/window, allowing the lights from the outside area in front of your room and the bright parking lot lights to shine over the top.
Then we get to the bathroom, which has an oval, uncovered window high up on the wall over the toilet. This allows the aforementioned front entry and parking lot lights to fully illuminate the bathroom, through the kitchenette, and into the bedroom. You have to close the bathroom door to shut out the light.
Lastly, the peephole in the entry door is huge, it’s about the size of a quarter. We’ve never seen one this big! It also allows the lights in the entryway to beam into the room. We always find a tissue or toilet paper stuffed in it to stop the light or put it there ourselves.
