Embark on a wild adventure across the African savanna on Kilimanjaro Safaris and get up close with some of the world’s most incredible animals!
Tucked away in the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Kilimanjaro Safaris is the crown jewel of non-thrill attractions. This open-air ride immerses you in the sights and sounds of a real African safari, complete with elephants, lions, and giraffes roaming free. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and discovery.
The Queue
As you enter the queue for Kilimanjaro Safaris, you’ll immediately feel transported to the heart of Africa. The queue winds through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, a fictional East African village that feels alive with the sights, sounds, and culture of the region.
You’ll pass through shaded areas lined with authentic details, from handcrafted decorations to colorful murals depicting local wildlife. The ambient sounds of African music and wildlife set the tone, creating a sense of anticipation as you prepare for your safari adventure.
The queue is designed to be both informative and immersive, with various signs and displays that offer insights into the animals you might encounter on your journey. Though the line can get long, the rich theming and shaded areas make the wait comfortable and engaging.
The Ride
Kilimanjaro Safaris is a sprawling, open-air adventure that takes you on an approximately 20-minute journey through the diverse landscapes of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. As your rugged safari vehicle sets off, you’ll traverse across a variety of ecosystems, each home to different species of animals. Your knowledgeable driver and guide will provide fascinating commentary as you encounter a wide range of wildlife in their natural habitats.
The open-air vehicle drives through areas where many animals roam free, and at times some of the animals can get quite close to your vehicle. All of the less docile animals are contained in other open-air areas that while visible to you, keep them separated from the vehicle.
The Little Ituri Forest: Early in the journey, you’ll wind through dense vegetation, where you might spot okapis, bongo antelopes, and hippos lounging in the water. The forest is also home to the black rhino, an elusive and endangered species that, if you’re lucky, you might see grazing or wallowing in the mud.
The Safi River:Â As you approach the Safi River, keep an eye out for crocodiles lurking in the water and a variety of bird species, including pink-backed pelicans. On the riverbanks, you may also catch a glimpse of large pods of hippos partially submerged, their eyes and ears just above the waterline.
The Savanna: The vast, open savanna is the highlight of the safari, where you’ll encounter some of the most iconic African animals. Herds of giraffes roam freely and gracefully nibbling on the tops of acacia trees. You’ll also see zebras, wildebeest, and antelope grazing on the grasslands.
Majestic lions often rest on the kopjes (rocky outcrops), surveying their territory, while cheetahs might be spotted lounging in the shade. The savanna is also home to white rhinos, and you might see warthogs digging with their snouts in search of food.
The Elephant Country: As you continue, the landscape becomes more rugged, and you’ll enter an area known for its elephant herds. Here, you might spot young elephants playing or older ones using their trunks to pull down branches. The guide will share interesting facts about these gentle giants, their behaviors, and their importance to the ecosystem.
The Magadi Glen: In the final stretch of your safari, you’ll pass by the tranquil Magadi Glen, where you might see ostriches and other smaller animals like the springbok. The flamingos at the waterhole create a picturesque scene, their pink plumage reflecting beautifully in the water.
Throughout the ride, your guide will also point out some of the smaller, often overlooked species, such as the Thomson’s gazelle (also called “Tommies”) and the ever-watchful meerkats standing guard near their burrows.
The Ride Vehicle
The safari vehicle is an open-sided, all-terrain truck designed to navigate the varied terrain of the reserve. Each vehicle seats around 30 guests on bench-style seats, offering unobstructed views of the animals and landscapes on both sides.
The ride is bumpy and can be jostling at times, adding to the authenticity of the experience, so be prepared for a bit of a rough ride. The open design of the vehicle ensures that you’re fully immersed in the environment, with nothing but air between you and the animals.
Boarding and exiting the vehicle is straightforward, the boarding area is level with the vehicle seating area, and Cast Members are on hand to assist if needed.
Rider Swap
Rider Swap is available for Kilimanjaro Safaris, although it’s usually not necessary given the ride’s suitability for guests of all ages. If someone in your party prefers to skip the adventure, simply speak with a Cast Member at the entrance, and they can assist in arranging a Rider Swap.
Accessibility
Kilimanjaro Safaris is accessible to guests with mobility challenges. There are specially equipped vehicles that can accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs, allowing guests to remain in their mobility devices during the safari. The loading platform is level with the vehicle, making the transfer process smooth and easy. Cast Members are always ready to assist to ensure that everyone can enjoy this incredible experience.
