If you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation using military discounts, one of the most common questions is:
Is Shades of Green cheaper than a Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount in 2026?
The answer depends on three main factors:
- Your Shades of Green rate category
- Your travel dates
- Whether Disney’s Armed Forces Salute room discount is available
In some cases, Shades of Green is clearly cheaper. In other situations, a discounted Disney Value or Moderate Resort may cost less overall. Here’s how to compare them.
What is Shades of Green and who can stay there?
How Shades of Green Pricing Works
Shades of Green uses a fixed rate structure based on military pay grade categories.
- Category 1 – Lowest rates
- Category 2 – Mid-level rates
- Category 3 – Highest rates
Shades of Green rates do not fluctuate by day of the week. Rates change only once per year on October 1 when the new fiscal year begins.
Key differences:
- No hotel tax at Shades of Green
- $17 per night parking fee at the resort
- Theme park parking is not included unless using bus transportation
How Disney Armed Forces Salute Room Discounts Work
The Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount is not a fixed percentage. It is an “up to” discount.
For 2026:
- Value Resorts – Up to 15% most of the year, up to 20% in summer
- Moderate Resorts – Up to 20% most of the year, up to 25% in summer
Disney pricing fluctuates by season, day of the week, and availability. Friday and Saturday nights are usually the most expensive, while Monday through Wednesday are the lowest.
Disney resort rooms are subject to hotel tax (12.5%–13.5%), and resort parking is free; theme park parking is included for Disney resort guests.

When a Disney Armed Forces Salute Discount May Be Cheaper
A Disney discount may be cheaper:
- During midweek stays (Monday–Wednesday)
- In lower demand seasons
- When booking a Value Resort
- For certain Category 2 and 3 guests

Shades of Green Category 1 – Green, Category 2 – Purple, Category 3 – Teal; Disney Value (All-Star Movies) Blue

Thanks for the information. Having stayed in Disney hotels a few times, I still like SOG better for the overall cost (we usually go in NOV/DEC), early entry benefit and the general vibe being around the military family.
On cost, one additional item to consider is cost of meals and incidentals. In my experience, the meals at SOG are less expensive and having the PX onsite can be a great money saver.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Personally, I don’t find myself eating at Shades very often. But for those who do, you are right, it’s a lot less.
