Ambiance & History
Fantasyland has been at the heart of Disneyland since Opening Day, July 17, 1955. Walt Disney envisioned it as the physical embodiment of his studio’s animated classics—a place where his films could live beyond the screen.
In 1983, Fantasyland underwent a massive redesign, replacing its medieval tournament tents with the charming Alpine village architecture guests see today. Each attraction façade was rebuilt to reflect its story, creating a cohesive fairytale aesthetic unlike anything else in the park.
The Matterhorn Bobsleds, added in 1959, became the world’s first tubular steel coaster and remains a defining Disneyland landmark. Seasonal overlays, like “it’s a small world” Holiday, add festive cheer each winter with thousands of twinkling lights and a holiday soundtrack.
Today, Fantasyland continues to represent the heart of Walt’s original dream—a timeless land where fantasy and reality blend seamlessly, inspiring awe and joy for generations of guests.
Disneyland Park Layout
Fantasyland sits straight ahead beyond the hub and Sleeping Beauty Castle and functions as one of the most central lands in Disneyland. Because of its location, it acts as a major connector between multiple areas of the park.
Fantasyland is connected to:
- Main Street, U.S.A. via the castle and hub
- Tomorrowland via the pathway near the Matterhorn area
- Frontierland via the pathway near the left side of the hub
- Mickey’s Toontown via the tunnel under the Disneyland Railroad
- Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge via the entrance near the Fantasyland / Frontierland edge

Whether it’s your first trip or your fiftieth, no visit to Disneyland is complete without a walk through the land “where dreams come true.”
