Most people think the biggest advantage of staying at Shades of Green is the military discount.
And I understand why. The savings can be substantial, especially for military families comparing Shades of Green against Disney Deluxe Resort prices.
But after staying at Shades of Green many times over the years, I have come to appreciate something else even more.
Shades of Green changes the feel of your Walt Disney World vacation.
It gives you a place to step away from the noise, crowds, and nonstop stimulation of Disney without leaving the Walt Disney World area. That may not sound as exciting as a ticket discount or a big room savings number, but after several long park days, it can make an enormous difference.
Shades of Green Feels Different
Shades of Green is not a Disney resort in the traditional sense. You will not find oversized character statues, Disney music everywhere, or the same level of themed immersion you find at many Disney-owned resorts.
For some families, that is a downside.
For others, it is one of the best parts of staying there.
After a full day at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom, it can be surprisingly nice to return to a resort that feels calmer, quieter, and more removed from the rush of the parks.
Disney is wonderful. Disney is also loud, crowded, expensive, emotional, and exhausting.
Shades of Green gives military families a place to breathe.

The Atmosphere Is More Relaxed
One of the things I appreciate most about Shades of Green is the atmosphere.
At many Disney resorts, guests are rushing from one place to another. They are trying to make the next bus, get to a dining reservation, reach the Skyliner, or collapse after a long park day. You can pass dozens of people in a lobby or hallway without anyone looking up.
Shades of Green feels different.
Guests smile at each other. People say good morning. Families waiting for the bus strike up conversations. You hear people talking about duty stations, retirements, deployments, PCS moves, military kids, and past Disney trips.
It is not forced. It is not loud. It is just there.
There is a shared understanding that most people staying at Shades of Green are connected by military service in one way or another. Active duty, retired military, eligible veterans, Department of Defense civilians, spouses, children, parents, and grandparents all cross paths there.
That creates a sense of community you do not find at most hotels.
Everyone is still on their own vacation, of course. But there is a kindness and familiarity at Shades that I notice every time I stay there. It feels less like walking through a giant resort full of strangers and more like staying somewhere with people who understand the same world you come from.
Steve Says: I tell people all the time about the friendly atmosphere between the guests. It’s one of the most special things about the resort!
It Helps You Decompress
This may be the most underrated benefit of all.
A Walt Disney World vacation can become a constant sprint if you let it. Park opening, Lightning Lane times, dining reservations, showtimes, transportation, mobile orders, fireworks, and tired kids can turn even a fun day into a very full day.
When you return to Shades of Green, the pace changes.
You can sit in the lobby without feeling like the resort is pushing you toward the next thing. You can walk the grounds. You can sit outside for a few minutes. You can let the kids settle down. You can have a slower meal. You can return to a room that gives everyone more space.
That matters.
Sometimes the best part of a Disney vacation is not doing more. Sometimes it is having a place where your family can recover enough to enjoy the next day.
The Rooms Make a Bigger Difference Than You Expect
Shades of Green rooms are large, and that advantage becomes more noticeable the longer your trip lasts.
Room size may not sound exciting when you are planning from home. But after several park days, it matters a lot.
Families need space for luggage, strollers, park bags, souvenirs, wet shoes, snacks, chargers, and tired people. Kids need room to spread out. Adults need somewhere to sit that is not the edge of a bed.
That extra space helps the vacation feel less cramped.
For military families traveling with multiple children, grandparents, or extended family, that can be a major advantage.

You Still Get Important Disney Resort Benefits
One of the most overlooked parts of staying at Shades of Green is that guests receive access to important Disney resort-style benefits.
Shades of Green guests are eligible for Early Theme Park Entry, which allows entry to any Walt Disney World theme park 30 minutes before regular park opening.
Shades of Green guests are also eligible for Extended Evening Theme Park Hours on select nights at select parks. That is the same major evening benefit associated with Disney Deluxe Resorts and other select hotels.
This is where Shades of Green becomes especially interesting.
You are not paying Disney Deluxe Resort prices, but you can still access one of the most valuable Disney Deluxe-style benefits.
For many military families, that combination is hard to beat: a calmer resort, larger rooms, military pricing, and access to Extended Evening Hours when your schedule lines up.
Extended Evening Hours Fit the Shades of Green Style
Extended Evening Hours are especially helpful for families who enjoy the parks after the daytime crowds thin out.
These evenings can feel completely different from the middle of the day. The temperature is cooler, the pace is calmer, and the park often feels much more manageable.
For repeat visitors, adults, families with older kids, and military retirees who do not need to be at rope drop every morning, Extended Evening Hours can be one of the best perks at Walt Disney World.
And when you return to Shades afterward, you are not walking back into a loud, crowded, high-energy resort. You are returning to a quieter place where the vacation can slow down again.

Transportation Is a Tradeoff, Not a Dealbreaker
Shades of Green transportation is different from Disney resort transportation.
That does not automatically make it worse. It just means you need to understand how it works before your trip.
Shades of Green provides complimentary bus transportation to the Walt Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs. Guests use Shades of Green transportation from the resort’s lower lobby area, and resort transportation access requires the proper resort identification and ID.
For Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, Shades of Green buses use the Transportation and Ticket Center. That means you will transfer to the monorail or ferry for Magic Kingdom, and to the EPCOT monorail line for EPCOT.
That adds a step.
But there are also advantages. Shades buses can feel calmer than crowded Disney buses, especially midday. You are not always packed shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone leaving a major Disney resort at once.
The key is expectation.
If you expect Shades transportation to work exactly like Disney resort buses, you may be frustrated. If you understand the tradeoffs ahead of time, it becomes much easier to plan around.

Parking Is an Underrated Advantage
Parking rarely gets anyone excited when planning a Disney vacation, but it can affect your daily experience.
At Shades of Green, having your vehicle nearby in the attached multi-level garage can be a real advantage, especially for families who drive to Florida or rent a car.
You are not dealing with the same massive Disney resort parking feel that comes with the huge parking lots at the larger Disney hotels. Returning to the resort, unloading bags, or heading out for an off-property errand can feel simpler.
There is a practical ease to it.
That may not sound magical, but after several days of theme park logistics, easy can feel wonderful.
It Feels Like a Break Without Leaving Disney
This is the real strength of Shades of Green.
You are still in the Walt Disney World area. You are still close to the parks. You still have access to military ticket sales, resort dining, transportation, pools, and important Disney benefits.
But emotionally, it feels like you have stepped slightly away from the intensity.
That difference is hard to explain until you experience it.
For some families, staying in the Disney bubble is the goal. They want Disney theming from morning until night, and that is a completely valid way to vacation.
But other families want the parks during the day and a calmer reset at night.
That is where Shades of Green shines.
Steve Says: The volume of people at Shades of Green is way less than at a Disney Resort. In fact, during most of the day, it can feel almost deserted! Enjoying a quiet day at the pool is possible at Shades of Green, where, at a Disney Resort, it’s almost impossible!
Who Will Appreciate This Most?
The unexpected advantage of Shades of Green is strongest for families who value space, calm, and decompression as much as convenience.
It is especially appealing for:
- Military retirees who enjoy a slower resort pace
- Families staying five or more nights
- Grandparents traveling with children and grandchildren
- Repeat Disney visitors who do not need nonstop Disney theming
- Families who want access to Disney perks without Disney Deluxe pricing
- Guests who appreciate being around other military-connected families
For these guests, Shades of Green is not just a cheaper place to sleep. It becomes part of the vacation rhythm.
Who Might Prefer a Disney Resort?
Shades of Green is not the right fit for everyone.
Some families are happier at a Disney-owned resort, especially if they want heavy Disney theming, direct Disney transportation, Skyliner access, or the most immersive Disney bubble experience possible.
First-time visitors may also prefer the simplicity of a Disney resort if they do not want to think through transportation differences, ticket logistics, or resort access rules.
There is nothing wrong with that.
The best resort choice is not always the cheapest option. It is the one that fits the way your family actually vacations.

Final Thoughts
When people ask me why I like staying at Shades of Green, they usually expect me to start with the price.
The savings matter. Of course they do.
But that is no longer the first thing I think about.
I think about walking back into a calmer lobby after a crowded park day. I think about larger rooms, friendly guests, quiet evenings, and the feeling that my family can actually decompress.
I think about being around other military-connected families who smile, say hello, and seem to understand that we are all part of the same larger community.
That is the unexpected advantage of staying at Shades of Green.
It is not just that it can save military families money.
It can make the entire vacation feel different.
