Planning a Disney vacation as a military family comes with a unique decision: Should you stay at the military-exclusive Shades of Green resort, or book a discounted room at a Disney-owned hotel?
The answer depends on more than just where you want to sleep—it’s about pricing, perks, proximity, and priorities. In this post, we’ll compare real sample rates, explain the discounts available at each, and help you figure out which option makes the most sense for your family’s next magical stay.
What Is Shades of Green?
Shades of Green is a resort operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, located on Disney property near Magic Kingdom. It’s exclusively available to military-affiliated guests and offers oversized rooms, a quiet atmosphere, and tax-free pricing.
It’s not run by Disney, so you won’t get full theming or access to things like the Disney Dining Plan—but you do get Early Entry and Disney transportation, and a lot of room for your money.
What Are Disney Resort Military Discounts?
Disney offers military families discounted rooms at its Value, Moderate, and Deluxe resorts through the Disney Armed Forces Salute program. These discounts can be substantial—up to 30% off regular prices—and give you access to the Disney Dining Plan, immersive theming, and proximity to the parks.
To book these rooms, you’ll need to call Disney directly or work with a trusted military travel agent (like our recommended partner, The Mouse Experts Military Disney Vacation Specialists).

FAQ: Shades of Green vs. Disney Resort Military Discounts
What’s the main difference between Shades of Green and Disney’s military room discounts?
Shades of Green (SoG) is a DoD-owned resort on Disney property with large, tax-free rooms and occasional SoG-only specials. Disney-owned resorts offer Armed Forces Salute discounts (typically 20–30% off) across Value, Moderate, and Deluxe categories—with full Disney theming and eligibility for the Disney Dining Plan.
Which option is usually cheaper?
On pure price, Shades of Green generally wins—especially for Category 1 and 2 guests (E-1–E-6; E-7–O-3). SoG is also tax-free, avoiding the ~12–14% hotel tax added to Disney hotel bills.
How do the 2025 example rates compare?
From your sample table (before Disney discounts):
Value: Disney $240–$300 vs SoG $164 / $184 / $204
Moderate: Disney $340–$420 vs SoG $184 / $204 / $224
Deluxe: Disney $600–$800+ vs SoG $209 / $229 / $249
Reminder: SoG does not charge sales or hotel taxes.
What are the Armed Forces Salute room discount levels at Disney?
Typical ranges (subject to availability and blackout dates): Deluxe up to 30%, Moderate 25%, Value 20%. You must call Disney or use a trusted military travel agent to book.
Does Shades of Green run its own specials?
Yes—Monthly Specials (often 10–15% off rooms; 15–25% off room+breakfast) on select dates. They cannot be combined and tend to sell out quickly.
Can I get the Disney Dining Plan at Shades of Green?
No. SoG is not Disney-operated. The Disney Dining Plan is only available when staying at Disney-owned resorts on eligible packages.
What park perks do I get at each?
Both SoG and Disney-owned resorts include Early Theme Park Entry. Extended Evening Hours are a Disney Deluxe/Deluxe Villa benefit (SoG does not receive this perk).
Which is better for larger families?
Shades of Green. Standard rooms are larger (sleep up to 5) and there are a few suites—great if you need space without paying Deluxe prices.
Which is better for park commandos?
A Disney Value or Moderate with the Salute discount often fits best—especially if you want Dining Plan, Skyliner/Monorail connectivity (varies by resort), and immersive theming close to the action.
How do I book each option?
Shades of Green: book online or call SoG; monitor Monthly Specials.
Disney resorts: call Disney or use a recommended military travel agent (e.g., The Mouse Experts – Military Disney Vacation Specialists).
How-To: Decide Between Shades of Green and Disney Resorts
- Set your priority. If you want the lowest total cost & biggest rooms, lean Shades of Green. If you want full Disney immersion (theming, Dining Plan, location perks), lean a Disney resort with the Armed Forces Salute.
- Run the math (with tax). Compare SoG rates by eligibility category vs. Disney’s discounted nightly rate plus ~12–14% tax. Add parking/fees if applicable.
- Check availability windows. Disney Salute inventory can be limited; SoG Monthly Specials are date-specific and go fast.
- Factor park perks. If Extended Evening Hours matter, consider a Disney Deluxe/Deluxe Villa. If you just need Early Entry and space, SoG shines.
- Choose your booking path. SoG: book direct; watch specials. Disney: call Disney or let The Mouse Experts handle it for you.
- Lock it in & plan parks. Book the best fit for your family and set up **Theme Park Reservations** if your ticket type requires them.

I was an avid user of SOG, emphasize “was”. With the loss of being able to walk over to the Poly now, the Magic Kingdom bus takes you only to the TTC (so you have to deal with non-resort guests if wanting early entry), and the lack of consistence in bus times (at least the last few times I stayed at SOG.) Include the discounts that Disney has offered recently on resorts, it’s a no-brainer for me: Disney-owned resorts is the way to go. I am staying at the AKL this September for $385.00 per night average (plus tax). With the added perks it is well worth the difference in price.
I still enjoy reading about the topics in your blog and I really am pleased that the military has a wonderful place to stay at Disney World such as SOG, but overall my preference is the Disney resorts. If SOG and WDW would build a bridge to reach the Poly from SOG, that might change my mind (might).
Thanks for listening.
Hi David,
I to prefer the Disney resorts, only stating at Shades of Green very occasionally for updates. I’d rather get the full Disney experience. While nice, Shades does not offer that. The crosswalk situation is a real issue for me too, used it all the time.
When I was a E-6 we had a fabulous week stay at Shades and loved it, but the staff and vibe there was totally different after the remodel closure and refusal to bring back the union employees.
And they have treated me personally quite poorly multiple times over the years, so it’s Disney for me too.
