If you’ve stayed at Shades of Green in Florida, you know what a valuable perk it is for military families visiting Walt Disney World. So it’s natural to ask: Is there a Shades of Green resort near Disneyland in California?
Short answer: No. There is no Shades of Green or Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) at or near Disneyland. The only Shades of Green is located at Walt Disney World in Florida.
What Is Shades of Green?
Shades of Green is a military-only resort located on Walt Disney World property and operated by the Department of Defense. It delivers deluxe-level rooms and amenities at prices set by a fixed, rank-based system (rates adjust annually on October 1, not seasonally).
Eligibility highlights: Shades of Green serves eligible active duty, Reservists, National Guard, retirees, veterans with qualifying disability status, DoD civilians (no time-based restriction), and more. (For details, see our full eligibility guide.)
Because it sits right across from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Shades of Green offers quick access to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT transportation, making it a powerful value for military families visiting Florida.

History of the Resort
- 1973: Opened as Disney’s Golf Resort
- 1986: Renamed the Disney Inn
- 1994: Leased by the Department of Defense and renamed Shades of Green
- 1996: Purchased outright by the DoD
- Early 2000s: Major expansion to serve more military families
Shades of Green is one of four Armed Forces Recreation Centers worldwide (alongside Hale Koa in Hawai‘i, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Germany, and Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul).

Was Expansion Ever Considered in California?
Yes—at least at the exploratory level. In the early 2000s, the Armed Forces Recreation Centers had an online survey for service members that asked about interest in a potential additional stateside location for a new AFRC. Anaheim (Disneyland) was among the options listed. I completed that survey and, in my newsletter, encouraged others to vote for Anaheim.
Why Didn’t a California AFRC Happen?
We don’t know. No public results were released from that survey, and an AFRC was never built near Disneyland. While we can speculate about cost, land availability, and shifting priorities, the bottom line is that no California AFRC materialized.

Conclusion
No—there isn’t a Shades of Green at Disneyland. The sole Shades of Green remains in Florida at Walt Disney World. While a California AFRC was explored via survey decades ago, it never moved forward.
The good news: military families still have excellent Disneyland savings options through Armed Forces Salute tickets, regular military discounts, and military-friendly lodging. With the right strategy, your Anaheim trip can be both magical and budget-smart.
