Palm Wing vs. Magnolia Wing at Shades of Green: Which Should You Request?

The Palm Wing is generally the stronger choice when garage access or bathroom flexibility matters most. The Magnolia Wing is generally better for guests who expect to spend considerable time at the pools, Evergreens, the Exchange, and other recreation areas.

For many families, however, the difference is not important enough to worry about. The best request is the one that solves a specific problem for the way your family vacations.

Important: A wing preference is always a request and is never guaranteed.

Quick Recommendation: Palm or Magnolia?

Your Priority Wing to Consider Why
Convenient access to the parking garage Palm The garage connects with the Palm Wing
Several adults or teenagers sharing one room Palm The split bathroom has a separate two-sink vanity area
Race weekend or early park mornings Palm The bathroom layout allows more than one person to get ready at a time
Pool afternoons or resort days Magnolia Magnolia is more convenient to the pools and recreation areas
Young children who will use the pools and playground Magnolia Shorter trips back to the room can make family resort time easier
Frequent visits to Evergreens or the Exchange Magnolia Both are located on the Magnolia side of the resort
A quiet room Either Many guests perceive Palm as quieter, but individual room location matters more
No strong priority Either Both wings provide the complete Shades of Green experience

Planning Tip: Do not request a wing simply because another guest prefers it. Choose the one feature that would make the greatest practical difference during your stay.

Palm Wing vs. Magnolia Wing at a Glance

Feature Palm Wing Magnolia Wing
Building history Built from 2002–2004 Original resort building dating to 1970
Most recent major room renovation 2014–2015 2017–2018
Bathroom configuration Shower and toilet in one room, with a large two-sink vanity outside Shower, toilet, and one sink in a single bathroom
Parking garage Attached Longer trip
Pools and playground Longer walk Most convenient
Evergreens and Exchange Longer walk Most convenient
Bus stop Convenience depends more on the location of the individual room than on the wing
Common guest perception Often described as quieter and more removed Often preferred for family and recreation convenience

Palm is the newer building, but Magnolia received the more recent guest room renovation. Neither wing should be viewed as an untouched older section of the resort.

The most important permanent difference inside the standard rooms is the bathroom configuration.

Shades of Green Resort Layout

The Bathroom Difference

Palm rooms have a split bathroom arrangement. The shower and toilet are enclosed together, while a large vanity with two sinks sits in the outer area.

That allows one person to shower or use the toilet while someone else brushes their teeth, applies makeup, styles their hair, or gets ready at the vanity. It can make a noticeable difference when teenagers or several adults share a room.

Magnolia rooms have a traditional single bathroom containing the shower, toilet, and one sink. When one person occupies the bathroom, the sink is also unavailable.

That tradeoff may matter less to a couple or a family with younger children. For those guests, shorter walks to the pools and the playground may be more valuable than an additional sink.

Common Mistake: Choosing Magnolia for its location without considering how several people will get ready each morning—or choosing Palm for its bathroom when the family plans to spend every afternoon at the pool.

Why You Might Request the Palm Wing

Parking Garage Access

Palm provides the most convenient connection to the Shades of Green parking garage.

This matters most on arrival and departure days, during grocery runs, and for guests who expect to drive regularly during their vacation. It matters much less if you plan to park once and rely on resort transportation for the remainder of the trip.

Bathroom Flexibility

The split bathroom is Palm’s clearest room-level advantage.

It is particularly helpful for families with teenagers, groups of adults, and runners or park guests trying to get ready early without creating a bathroom bottleneck.

Atmosphere and Views

Many repeat guests describe Palm as quieter, brighter, or more peaceful. Its more removed location and distance from the main pool areas may contribute to that perception.

Some Palm rooms also offer attractive golf course views, although a particular view is a separate request and is never guaranteed.

Choose the Palm Wing when making mornings easier is your biggest priority.

Its split bathroom and attached parking garage make Palm especially practical for families with teenagers, several adults sharing a room, race-weekend guests, and travelers who expect to drive regularly.

Why You Might Request the Magnolia Wing

Pools and Recreation

Magnolia provides the most convenient access to the resort’s pools, playground, and nearby recreation areas.

This can make a meaningful difference on resort days or during midday park breaks, especially when carrying towels, pool bags, flotation items, or tired children back to the room.

Evergreens and the Exchange

Evergreens and the Exchange are located on the Magnolia side of the resort.

Guests who expect to eat at Evergreens frequently or make repeated Exchange visits for drinks, snacks, toiletries, or forgotten items may appreciate the shorter walk.

Magnolia is generally best for: Families with young children, guests planning pool afternoons or rest days, and travelers who expect to use the resort’s recreation and nearby amenities frequently.

Choose the Magnolia Wing when resort convenience during the day is your biggest priority.

Its location near the pools, playground, Evergreens, and the Exchange makes Magnolia especially practical for families with younger children, pool-focused stays, and guests planning resort days or midday breaks.

STEVE SAYS: The Magnolia Wing feels like the heart of the resort because the pools, playground, and Evergreens naturally draw families there. While the Palm feels more removed.

Does Room Location Matter More Than the Wing?

For many guests, yes.

A conveniently located room in either building may be preferable to a distant room in the wing you originally requested. Long hallways, elevator placement, floor, and proximity to the lobby can all affect the amount of walking involved.

This is particularly important for two common concerns.

Shades of Green's Bus Stop

Shades of Green’s Bus Stop

STEVE SAYS: If someone forced me to recommend one wing for the average first-time guest, I’d probably say it doesn’t matter nearly as much as people think. The room location within the wing often has a bigger impact on your stay than whether the room is technically in Palm or Magnolia.

Bus Stop Convenience

Neither wing is automatically best for the bus stop. The walk depends heavily on where the room sits within the building.

If transportation access is your highest priority, requesting a room reasonably close to the lobby may be more useful than requesting Palm or Magnolia by itself.

Quietness

Many repeat guests perceive Palm as quieter, but Palm is not a designated quiet wing.

A room near an elevator, connecting door, active family, or busy hallway can be noisy in either building. When quietness is the real priority, request a quiet location rather than assuming the wing name will guarantee one.

Other room requests you may consider include:

  • Near the lobby
  • Near or away from an elevator
  • Near an exterior stairwell
  • Upper or lower floor
  • Golf course view
  • Convenient pool access
  • Quiet location

Limit your request to the one or two factors that matter most. A long list of competing preferences makes it harder for the room-assignment team to determine your actual priority.

For example:

We would prefer the Palm Wing because several adults will be sharing the room. If possible, our highest priority is a quiet location.

Or:

We would prefer the Magnolia Wing because we have young children and plan to use the pools frequently. Convenient pool access is our highest priority.

Steve’s Recommendation

STEVE SAYS: Our first stay at Shades of Green was in a Poolside Room in the Magnolia Wing. There was no Palm Wing at the time! I love the Poolside rooms, and that wing feels more like Shades of Green to me, so I often stay there. I have requested the Palm when driving and when trying to get a view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks (see Best Rooms in links below).

But as I’ve said throughout this post, every family is different, and you should opt for what you think will work best for your situation!

Request Palm when garage access or the split bathroom will meaningfully improve your stay. Request Magnolia when pool and recreation convenience matter more. Without one of those clear priorities, either wing can be a good assignment.
