Did you know that Sergeant Donald Duck Served in the Army during World War 2?
Though every character was free game, Donald Duck stood out as a favorite to represent the American way: hard working and angry! He appeared in many shorts and propaganda videos, and actually is the character who appears in more military insignias than any other character. There are more than 1,200 American military units with Donald Duck as part of their insignia!
The Spirit of ’43
Prior to Donald’s time in service, he taught us the slogan “Taxes to defeat the Axis”! Like us, he doesn’t want to pay taxes, but he learned that his income tax money goes to fight the Axis powers. He also gets a tour of his tax dollars at work creating the guns to sink enemy ships. It’s so pro-America, we love it! See it below:
Donald Gets Drafted
When the United States entered World War II, Donald Duck was drafted in the Army and was assigned to an Airborne Unit in “Donald Gets Drafted”. Watch it below:
Cpl. Donald Duck’s last mission with the U.S. Army Airborne was a solo mission to Japan. He showed bravery while taking on enemy fire after landing. Upon escape, he single-handedly wiped out an enemy airfield, thereby completing his mission. See the whole story in “Commando Duck” below:
Fun Fact: The only Donald Duck film to ever win an Oscar was the 1943 Der Fuehrer’s Face, which is a propaganda film of Donald Duck having a nightmare about living in Nazi Germany.
Der Fuehrer’s Face
Donald has to live the oppressive life in Nazi Germany as a worker in a munitions factory facing long laborous days and starvation, while living in constant fear of offending the regime. When he wakes up he is so excited to be a citizen of the United States of America! Watch Donald’s most accomplished short below:.
To honor Cpl. Duck, the United States Government promoted him to Sgt. Donald Duck before honorably discharging him from the U.S. Army on his 50th birthday in 1984.
