One of the biggest assumptions military families make when planning a Walt Disney World vacation is that Shades of Green is always the cheapest place to stay.
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it is not.
The real answer depends on your rank, military status, family size, travel dates, resort preferences, and how much convenience matters to your family.
This guide compares real military-family vacation scenarios instead of giving a generic “Shades vs. Disney” answer.
This post was inspired by a large amount of reader discussion that I had on a Facebook share last month, where some families swear Shades is always cheaper, while others find Disney military room discounts work better for them.
Planning a Stay at Shades of Green?
Shades of Green is one of the most unique military benefits available for Walt Disney World vacations. From eligibility rules and room categories to transportation and military ticket sales, these guides will help you better understand Disney’s military-only resort.

The Big Question: Is Shades of Green Always Cheaper?
No. Shades of Green is not always cheaper than a Disney Resort with a military discount, and sometimes not even cheaper than certain Disney Resorts at full price.
For many families, especially lower pay grades and larger families, Shades of Green can be a fantastic value. But Disney Resorts can become very competitive depending on your dates, rank category, resort choice, transportation needs, and available military room discounts.
The better question is not:
“Is Shades cheaper?”
The better question is:
“Which option gives my family the best total value?”
Why The Answer Changes By Family
Shades of Green and Disney Resorts price rooms very differently.
Shades of Green uses pay-grade-based pricing. Disney uses seasonal, date-based pricing with variable percentage-based military discounts when available.
That means the same Disney Resort may be expensive one week and surprisingly reasonable another week. Meanwhile, Shades of Green rates stay steady during the fiscal year, but your price category changes the comparison dramatically.
Disney Resort Pricing Has Tiers Within Tiers
It is not enough to compare “Value,” “Moderate,” and “Deluxe.”
Disney Value Resorts have their own pricing differences. The All-Star Resorts are the lowest-priced Disney Value Resorts, while Pop Century costs more because of its Disney Skyliner access.
That Skyliner premium matters. For some families, Pop Century’s higher price is worth it because getting to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios is easier.
Disney Deluxe Resorts also have internal price tiers. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge are lower-priced Deluxe options compared to resorts such as the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Beach Club, Yacht Club, and BoardWalk.
That makes Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge very important in Shades of Green comparisons. They can sometimes put a Disney Deluxe stay closer to Shades pricing than families expect. But a Deluxe will always be more expensive.
Disney prices also vary by day of the week. Friday and Saturday nights, and sometimes Thursday and Sunday nights, are often more expensive than Monday through Wednesday nights, even within the same resort and same price season. That is one reason two families staying at the same Disney Resort in the same month can receive noticeably different totals. Shades of Green does not work that way; its standard room rates stay the same each night within the fiscal year.
How These Comparisons Will Work
The examples below are designed to show how the decision changes for different military families.
Price example used in this article: These charts use a sample 6-night stay from Monday, 14 September through Saturday, 19 September 2026. This keeps the comparison inside Disney’s regular 2026 Armed Forces Salute room-discount window and uses a normal week instead of a holiday peak.
Disney rack rates shown below are tax-inclusive rates from MouseSavers’ 2026 Walt Disney World resort rate charts. The Disney military rate is estimated by applying the highest 2026 Armed Forces Salute room discount available for that resort category during this date range: 15% for Value Resorts, 20% for Moderate Resorts, and 25% for Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts. Shades of Green rates use published FY26 standard-room rates and do not include hotel tax because Shades of Green rooms are tax-exempt.
Important: Disney military room discounts are limited and based on availability (see How Disney’s Military Room Discounts Work). These charts show what the comparison looks like when the highest applicable discount is available for the resort and room type shown.
For each scenario, I show the applicable Shades of Green category for that family. That keeps the chart focused on the reader in that situation. Here are the FY26 Shades of Green standard-room totals for the same 6-night sample stay:
- Category 1: $184 per night / $1,104 total
- Category 2: $237 per night / $1,422 total
- Category 3: $257 per night / $1,542 total
For each scenario, we will compare:
- Shades of Green
- A lower-priced Disney Value Resort
- Pop Century as the Skyliner Value example
- A Disney Moderate Resort
- A lower-priced Disney Deluxe Resort where relevant
Scenario 1: E-5 Family of Four
This is one of the most important examples because many active-duty families are trying to stretch their Disney vacation budget as far as possible.
For an E-5 family of four, Shades of Green is often very hard to beat. The room is larger, there is no hotel tax, and Category 1 pricing gives junior enlisted families one of the strongest lodging values at Walt Disney World.
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 1 | N/A | $1,104 | Baseline |
| Disney All-Star Movies Standard Room | $1,284 | $1,091 | Disney saves $13 |
| Disney Pop Century Standard Room | $1,599 | $1,359 | Disney costs $255 more |
| Disney Caribbean Beach Standard Location | $2,286 | $1,829 | Disney costs $725 more |
My Take
For most E-5 families, Shades of Green is likely to be the first place I would check.
The main exception is a family that strongly values Disney transportation, especially Skyliner access. If EPCOT and Hollywood Studios are major priorities, Pop Century or Caribbean Beach deserve a closer look.
Scenario 2: Retired E-7 Family of Four
A retired E-7 family sits in an interesting middle ground.
Shades of Green can still be a strong value, but Disney Resorts may become more competitive depending on the dates and discount availability.
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 2 | N/A | $1,422 | Baseline |
| Disney All-Star Movies Standard Room | $1,284 | $1,091 | Disney saves $331 |
| Disney Pop Century Standard Room | $1,599 | $1,359 | Disney saves $63 |
| Disney Caribbean Beach Standard Location | $2,286 | $1,829 | Disney costs $407 more |
My Take
For this family, I would price both options carefully.
Shades may still win, especially on room size and total cost. But if Disney has a strong military room discount available, a Value or Moderate Resort may be closer than expected.
Scenario 3: O-4 Family of Four
This is where the comparison gets especially interesting.
Because Shades of Green pricing increases by category, higher-ranking guests may find that Disney military room discounts become more competitive.
This is especially true when comparing Shades of Green with Disney Moderate Resorts or the lower-priced Disney Deluxe Resorts such as Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge.
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 3 | N/A | $1,542 | Baseline |
| Disney Pop Century Standard Room | $1,599 | $1,359 | Disney saves $183 |
| Disney Caribbean Beach Standard Location | $2,286 | $1,829 | Disney costs $287 more |
| Disney Wilderness Lodge Resort View | $3,971 | $2,978 | Disney costs $1,436 more |
| Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort View | $4,002 | $3,002 | Disney costs $1,460 more |
My Take
For an O-4 family, I would not automatically assume Shades of Green is the better value.
Shades may still win on space and calm. But if the price difference is modest, a Disney Deluxe Resort may be worth it for transportation, theming, dining, and the full Disney Resort experience.
Scenario 4: 100% Disabled Veteran Couple
This scenario needs special attention.
A 100% disabled veteran with the proper military ID can use Shades of Green, and Shades can be an excellent benefit.
But transportation logistics matter.
Since the Shades of Green walkway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort closed in 2023, guests no longer have the same easy walking access to the Polynesian area and Disney transportation.
That matters even more for guests using scooters or mobility devices.
Shades of Green queues two buses for the first morning runs, but each bus can accommodate only two scooters. If more than four scooter users are trying to make rope drop, some guests may need to wait for the next bus, twenty minutes later.
For a relaxed trip, that may not matter much.
For a rope-drop trip, it can matter a lot.
One of the comments I heard most often after Disney closed the crosswalk was, I used to drive my scooter to the Polynesian via the walkway/crosswalk and take the monorail. This way, I avoided the limited scooter capacity of the Shades of Green Buses.
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 2 | N/A | $1,422 | Baseline |
| Disney Pop Century Standard Room | $1,599 | $1,359 | Disney saves $63 |
| Disney Caribbean Beach Standard Location | $2,286 | $1,829 | Disney costs $407 more |
| Disney Wilderness Lodge Resort View | $3,971 | $2,978 | Disney costs $1,556 more |
My Take
For a 100% disabled veteran couple, I would look beyond the room price.
If the trip is relaxed, Shades of Green can be a wonderful choice. If the plan includes scooters, early mornings, rope drop, or frequent park hopping, I would compare Disney Resorts carefully.
A Disney Resort may cost more, but it may reduce transportation friction enough to be worth it.
Scenario 5: DoD Civilian Family
DoD civilians are one of the most overlooked groups in military Disney planning.
DoD civilians are eligible for Shades of Green, but they are not eligible for Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets or Disney Armed Forces Salute room discounts.
That changes the math dramatically.
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 3 | N/A | $1,542 | Baseline |
| Disney All-Star Movies Standard Room | $1,284 | Not eligible for Salute room discount* | Disney saves $258 before transportation/value factors |
| Disney Pop Century Standard Room | $1,599 | Not eligible for Salute room discount* | Disney costs $57 more |
| Disney Caribbean Beach Standard Location | $2,286 | Not eligible for Salute room discount* | Disney costs $744 more |
* General public discounts may be available.
My Take
For many DoD civilian families, Shades of Green may be one of the strongest Disney World lodging values available.
Because DoD civilians cannot use Disney Armed Forces Salute room discounts, Shades should be high on the comparison list, but be sure to check for any general public discounts.
Scenario 6: Family of Five
This may be the strongest Shades of Green example.
A standard Shades of Green room sleeps five plus a crib. That can help larger families avoid Disney family suites, more expensive room categories, or two-room solutions.
Disney does have options for families of five. Port Orleans Riverside has 5th Sleeper rooms with a child-size pull-down bed. Caribbean Beach also has rooms with a child-size pull-down bed in some categories, though its room notes and booking details need to be checked carefully for your exact party. Several Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts also have rooms or studios that sleep five, but those comparisons usually move into a much higher price range.
For a practical military-family comparison, the most useful Disney examples are Port Orleans Riverside 5th Sleeper rooms, Art of Animation Family Suites, and two Value Resort rooms.
Family of Five Comparison: Shades Category 1
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 1 | N/A | $1,104 | Baseline |
| Disney Port Orleans Riverside Standard Location — 5th Sleeper | $2,415 | $1,932 | Disney costs $828 more |
| Disney Art of Animation Family Suite | $3,862 | $3,283 | Disney costs $2,179 more |
| Two Disney All-Star Movies Standard Rooms | $2,568 | $2,183 | Disney costs $1,079 more |
| Shades of Green Family Suite | N/A | $3,222 | Costs $2,118 more than one Shades standard room |
Family of Five Comparison: Shades Category 2
| Resort / Room | Rack Rate Total | Estimated Military Discount Total | Difference vs. Shades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shades of Green Standard Room — Category 2 | N/A | $1,422 | Baseline |
| Disney Port Orleans Riverside Standard Location — 5th Sleeper | $2,415 | $1,932 | Disney costs $510 more |
| Disney Art of Animation Family Suite | $3,862 | $3,283 | Disney costs $1,861 more |
| Two Disney All-Star Movies Standard Rooms | $2,568 | $2,183 | Disney costs $761 more |
| Shades of Green Family Suite | N/A | $3,222 | Costs $1,800 more than one Shades standard room |
My Take
For families of five, Shades of Green is often the first place I would check.
The room size and occupancy limit can change the entire vacation budget.
Costs Beyond The Room Rate
The cheapest room is not always the best value.
Before choosing, military families should also consider parking, transportation, room size, dining, and convenience.
Parking
Disney Resort guests do not pay nightly resort parking fees and receive free standard theme park parking.
Shades of Green charges its own parking fee, currently $17 per night. Shades guests who drive to Disney theme parks also pay Disney’s standard theme park parking fee, currently $35 per day, unless they use Shades transportation.
Transportation
Transportation is one of the biggest practical differences between Shades of Green and Disney Resorts.
Shades has its own transportation system. These buses do not go directly to the Magic Kingdom or EPCOT; guests are dropped at the Transportation and Ticket Center, where they have to transfer to Disney transportation to get to the parks. Those bound for Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom will share a bus.
Disney Resorts may offer Disney buses, boats, monorail, Skyliner access, or walking paths, depending on the resort.
For some families, transportation convenience is worth paying more.
Room Size
Shades of Green rooms are much larger than standard Disney Value rooms and larger than many Disney Moderate rooms.
That matters for families with kids, scooters, stroller gear, groceries, or longer stays.
Dining
Shades of Green does not offer the Disney Dining Plan.
That will not matter for every family, but it does matter for guests who want a Disney Resort package with dining attached.
When I Recommend Shades of Green
I recommend Shades of Green most often when families value room size, lower total cost, and a quieter atmosphere.
Shades is especially strong for:
- Junior enlisted families
- Larger families
- Families of five
- Longer vacations
- DoD civilians
- Guests who want a calmer resort
- Families who want Deluxe-level Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours access without Disney Deluxe pricing
When I Recommend Disney Resorts Instead
Disney Resorts may be the better fit when transportation, theming, or convenience matter more than room size.
Disney Resorts are especially worth considering for:
- Skyliner fans
- Rope-drop families
- Guests with mobility concerns
- Families who want the Disney Dining Plan
- Families who want the full Disney bubble
- Guests considering Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge with a military discount

Bottom Line
There is no universal winner.
Shades of Green is not always cheaper. Disney Resorts are not always better.
The right answer depends on your family’s eligibility, rank, travel dates, room needs, transportation needs, and vacation style.
The goal is not just to find the cheapest room.
The goal is to find the best value for your family’s Walt Disney World vacation.
For the sample September 2026 week used in this article, the biggest surprise is that Disney Value Resorts can beat Shades of Green for some higher-category guests when the full military room discount is available. But that does not automatically make Disney the better vacation choice.
Room size, transportation, scooter logistics, family size, and the Disney bubble all matter.
That is why this comparison is not just a math problem. It is a vacation-fit problem.
