Circle-Vision 360
At the heart of the Reflections of China experience lies the innovative technology of Circle-Vision, a groundbreaking filmmaking technique pioneered by Disney. With the first circle vision film America the Beautiful in Disneyland back in 1967, Imagineers have come a long way in technology to improve the immersive experience.
The history of Circle-Vision 360 at Disney World traces back to its original inception at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort. The concept emerged from Walt Disney’s vision to create immersive experiences that transport guests to different places and times.
Circle-Vision 360 technology made its debut in 1967 in Disneyland with the opening of the America the Beautiful attraction in the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. This groundbreaking presentation showcased panoramic footage of the United States, offering guests a breathtaking visual journey across the nation’s diverse landscapes and iconic landmarks.
Circle-Vision 360 is filmed with 9 cameras on a mount arranged in a circle pointing outward. This mount with the cameras is then attached to various means of moving (dollies, automotive vehicles, helicopters, planes, and boats) it in order to film the sequences. The individual films are then projected in the circular theatre by 9 projectors.
Over the decades, Disney’s Circle-Vision technology has continued to evolve, incorporating advancements in projection, sound, and storytelling to create ever-more immersive experiences. From the iconic Circle-Vision 360 theaters to the state-of-the-art digital projections utilized in modern attractions, Disney has remained at the forefront of immersive entertainment.
Reflections of China
In the case of Reflections of China, Circle-Vision serves as the perfect medium to showcase the beauty and diversity of the nation’s landscapes and culture. Through its seamless integration of multiple screens and surround sound, Circle-Vision creates a sense of presence that immerses viewers in the sights and sounds of China like never before.
The show is narrated by, an ancient Chinese poet (Keye Luke voice-over, Shih Kuan live action footage.[1] [2]), who takes the viewer on a tour of the Chinese countryside and historical structures and buildings. Some sites that are seen are The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City in Beijing, the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, Hunan, Guilin, Suzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
As guests marvel at the stunning vistas and captivating narratives unfolding around them, they become part of a rich tradition of immersive storytelling that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
