Ambience of the Morocco Pavilion
The Morocco Pavilion is both vibrant and tranquil, captivating visitors with its unique atmosphere. As you wander through the winding alleyways and hidden courtyards, you’ll be transported to a realm where time seems to slow down, allowing you to immerse yourself in the mystique of Moroccan culture. The walkways wind throughout the pavilion, loaded with loads of empty spaces to just enjoy your beautiful day.
The architecture of the pavilion is a masterpiece in itself, with intricately designed arches, ornate tile work, and majestic domes adorning the buildings. Every nook and cranny is filled with intricate details, from the colorful zellige tiles to the delicate latticework that casts enchanting shadows. The soothing sounds of traditional Moroccan music float through the air, transporting you to a world where ancient melodies echo through time.
Morocco is the Most Authentic Pavilion
The backstory of the Morocco Pavilion at Epcot is a fascinating tale that reflects the deep cultural ties between Disney and the Kingdom of Morocco. It begins with the late King Hassan II of Morocco, who was approached by Disney Imagineers in the early 1980s to bring an authentic Moroccan experience to Epcot. King Hassan II, recognizing the opportunity to showcase his country’s rich heritage to an international audience, graciously agreed to fund and support the construction of the pavilion.
To ensure utmost authenticity, the King enlisted the expertise of his own artisans and craftsmen to bring the pavilion to life. Skilled Moroccan artisans were carefully selected and brought to Florida, where they worked tirelessly to recreate the intricate architectural details and traditional craftsmanship of their homeland. The result is a testament to their remarkable talent and dedication, with every tile, carving, and embellishment meticulously crafted to mirror the beauty and grandeur of Moroccan architecture.
Furthermore, to maintain the integrity of the Moroccan experience, a replica of the famous Koutoubia Mosque’s minaret was built. However, Moroccan religious customs dictated that the minaret should not surpass the height of the minaret of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. As a result, the minaret in the Morocco Pavilion stands at a height of 140 feet, paying homage to this cultural tradition.
The Prince of Morocco, Moulay Rachid, also played a significant role in the development of the pavilion. As an ambassador of Moroccan culture, he supported the project and ensured that every aspect of the pavilion accurately represented the country’s vibrant heritage. The Prince’s involvement added a touch of royal elegance and prestige to the pavilion, further enhancing its authenticity and allure.
Thanks to the generous funding, artistic contributions, and dedication of the Moroccan royal family, the Morocco Pavilion at Epcot stands today as a testament to the deep friendship between Morocco and Disney. It is a remarkable blend of cultural authenticity and artistic excellence, inviting visitors to experience the wonders of Morocco without stepping foot outside the United States.
