Norwegian Experience at the Norway Pavilion
In the whimsical world of Epcot’s Norway Pavilion, the attention to detail goes to great heights—literally. Imagineers, the creative minds behind the theme park, have ingeniously replicated traditional Norwegian cottages where lush green grass grows on the rooftops. But how does one maintain the appearance of a well-manicured rooftop lawn? Enter the diligent work of the Disney horticultural team. Scaling ladders and employing special techniques, these skilled gardeners carefully trim and maintain the grass atop the structures to ensure the illusion remains intact. It’s a testament to the dedication and artistry of the Imagineers, who go to great lengths to create an immersive and enchanting experience for guests. So, as you explore the Norway Pavilion, don’t forget to cast your gaze skyward and appreciate the meticulous efforts that bring a touch of nature to even the highest points of this magical setting.
Who Paid for the Norway Pavilion?
The Norway Pavilion in Epcot was primarily funded by the Norwegian government and a consortium of private Norwegian companies. The government of Norway saw the opportunity to showcase Norwegian culture, history, and tourism to a global audience through the Disney theme park. They collaborated with companies such as Statoil (now Equinor), Norway’s state-owned energy company, and the telecommunications company Telenor, among others, to finance the construction and ongoing operations of the pavilion. This partnership between Norway and private entities ensured the creation of an authentic and immersive experience for visitors, while also promoting Norwegian interests and tourism.
In fact, Norway was not part of the original plan for EPCOT and opened in 1988. The Crown Prince of Norway, Harald V, dedicated the pavilion live via telecast to the people of Norway.
Experiences at the Norway Pavilion
You made your way to Norway in the World Showcase, now what? What is there to do? Norway is a unique pavilion that unlike the others has a very yin and yang set of experiences. You have meeting the famous princesses from the smash hit Frozen for the kids, and then you have a museum devoted to the Norse Gods for history enthusiasts.
Meet Anna and Elsa at the Norway Pavilion
Meeting Anna and Elsa in the Norway Pavilion is like stepping right into the magical world of Frozen. Located in Anna and Elsa’s Sommerhaus, a charming log cabin, this meet-and-greet experience brings the beloved characters to life in a way that will leave fans of all ages starstruck.
The Stave Church
Nestled within the Norway Pavilion in EPCOT, there is a small, and kind of hidden, church devoted to the Norse gods. This enchanting place of worship pays homage to the rich mythology and ancient beliefs of the Vikings. Step inside and be captivated by the intricately carved wooden statues and the soft glow of candlelight that fills the space.
The air is filled with an aura of reverence and mystery as you immerse yourself in the ancient traditions and legends of the Norse gods. It’s also filled with air conditioning!
Whether you’re familiar with the tales of Odin, Thor, and Freya or simply curious about this captivating mythology, the small church offers a serene retreat where you can reflect and connect with the spiritual heritage of the Vikings. It’s a tranquil sanctuary that transports you back in time, inviting you to appreciate the cultural significance and enduring legacy of Norse mythology.
Dining at the Norway Pavilion
Norway is a small but mighty pavilion that doesn’t offer a ton of options, but the food and drinks they do offer are done well. Plus, we believe that the Norway pavilion is the coolest pavilion to stop in for a snack. Literally cool. There is tons of shade and the moss that is on every surface has a natural coolness.
Table Service Restaurant – Akershus Royal Banquet Hall – Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion is a dining experience fit for royalty. The restaurant is modeled after medieval castles, and is all decorated for feast!
The highlight of this dining destination is the opportunity to meet beloved Disney Princesses at your table while you dine on traditional Norwegian-inspired fare. (Don’t worry, they have things for picky eaters, too!) Immerse yourself in a fairytale setting as you interact with characters like Belle, Cinderella, Ariel, Snow White, and more.
As you enter the banquet hall, you’ll be greeted by the warm ambiance and elegant décor, reminiscent of a grand castle dining room. The buffet offers a delightful array of dishes that showcase the flavors of Norway. Savor succulent Norwegian salmon, tender meatballs, and aromatic dishes like traditional cod, roasted chicken, and braised pork. Accompany your meal with an assortment of salads, cheeses, and bread.
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall offers a memorable dining experience for both young and young-at-heart guests. It’s a chance to enjoy a delicious meal while creating cherished memories with your favorite Disney Princesses. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a fairytale adventure, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall promises an enchanting and regal experience that will leave you feeling like royalty.
BONUS: If dining with Disney Princesses is a must on your next visit, you should know that it is much easier to land a reservation for Akershus Royal Banquet Hall than Cinderella’s Royal Table. Plus, if you’re paying out of pocket, it’s a bit cheaper, too.
Quick Service Restaurant – Kringla Bakery – If you find yourself strolling through the Norway Pavilion in Epcot and you’re craving a deliciously sweet treat or a scrumptious snack, look no further than the delightful Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe. This cozy little bakery exudes charm with its Scandinavian-inspired decor and tantalizing aroma of freshly baked goods. Step inside and be greeted by a mouthwatering display of Norwegian pastries and treats. From the famous School Bread, with its soft cardamom bun and luscious vanilla custard filling, to the savory sandwiches and refreshing beverages, Kringla Bakery has something for everyone.
We Recommend: Grab a School Bread and a Viking Coffee! Perfect combination of sweet but not-to-sweet treat and a coffee that feels like an indulgent dessert that just happens to be caffeinated and alcoholic.
Attractions at the Norway Pavilion
Frozen Ever After, located in the Norway Pavilion at Epcot, is an enchanting and popular attraction that immerses guests in the magical world of Disney’s Frozen. This captivating boat ride takes you on a journey through the kingdom of Arendelle, where you encounter beloved characters like Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and more. From the moment you step aboard, you’re transported to a wintry wonderland, complete with stunning animatronics, captivating scenes, and memorable songs from the film. Plus, it’s basically required to belt out “Let it Go!”.
Before the arrival of Frozen Ever After, the Norway Pavilion featured the Maelstrom attraction. Maelstrom, a thrilling boat ride, whisked guests through a mythical journey exploring the history and folklore of Norway. The ride took you past rugged landscapes, Viking ships, and even encountered a fearsome encounter with a mythical sea monster. Maelstrom offered a unique and educational experience, providing insights into Norwegian culture and history, while also providing a thrilling adventure for guests of all ages.
However, with the immense popularity of Frozen and its connection to the Norway Pavilion, Disney made the decision to reimagine the attraction and introduce Frozen Ever After in 2016. The ride underwent a major transformation, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and bringing the beloved characters and songs from the film to life. While Maelstrom holds a special place in the hearts of longtime Epcot visitors, Frozen Ever After has captured the imagination of guests, allowing them to experience the magic of Frozen in a way that is both captivating and immersive.
Shopping at the Norway Pavilion
You can’t travel without picking up a trinket or two, so naturally, when traveling through the World Showcase, you have to be able to do the same! Have fun shopping through the land of lush greenery and wooden trolls!
The Fjording – Do you feel like your Disney collection is lacking drinking horns or viking helmets with Mickey ears? Lucky for you, you can find all of your Viking gear here at The Fjording! You can also find a selection of warm knit sweaters made in Norway, because you know you’ll always need a thick wool sweater in Florida!
There is also a great photo op in the shop next to a giant (and slightly creepy) troll statue.
