Honor, celebrate, and experience the spirit of America with a day dedicated to military heroes, patriotism, and classic Americana at Walt Disney World!
Whether you’re an active-duty service member, retired military, a veteran, or simply someone who wants to pay tribute to those who serve, this itinerary is filled with powerful moments of reflection, awe-inspiring entertainment, and all-American fun.
From the solemn Flag Retreat Ceremony in Magic Kingdom to the stirring voices of the Voices of Liberty in EPCOT, and the rich storytelling of The Hall of Presidents, this day is a heartfelt journey through history and heroism. Along the way, you’ll enjoy classic American dining, iconic attractions, and even a few hidden tributes to the U.S. Armed Forces. If you’ve ever wanted to experience Disney with a deep sense of pride and patriotism, this is the way to do it!
The Magic Kingdom
Start your day in Liberty Square, it’s nestled in the heart of the Magic Kingdom, it is a tribute to America’s early days, capturing the essence of the nation’s colonial period. This land combines educational experiences with entertainment, allowing guests to walk through meticulously detailed streets that echo the architecture and atmosphere of 18th-century America. From historic landmarks to classic attractions, Liberty Square offers a unique blend of history and Disney magic, inviting visitors to explore the roots of American heritage.
Liberty Square exudes an air of historical authenticity, with its cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and a replica of the Liberty Bell. The area is a homage to America’s founding fathers and pivotal moments in U.S. history, designed to evoke a sense of patriotism and reflection. The attention to detail in the theming transports guests back in time, offering a peaceful yet poignant exploration of America’s past. The centerpiece, the Liberty Tree, stands as a symbol of unity and resistance, further anchoring the land’s historical significance.
Hall of Presidents
Visit the Hall of Presidents – Experience this dignified show in Liberty Square where all the U.S. Presidents are represented in Audio-Animatronic form. The presentation includes a sweeping film of American history and stirring patriotic music. Hearing the oath of office and seeing Abraham Lincoln speak is especially poignant. It’s an encapsulation of American ideals and leadership – something those in the military defend and uphold.
Hall of Presidents Museum – While waiting for the next performance of the Hall of Presidents, enjoy browsing around the waiting area, which is a mini-museum of Presidential History.
Liberty Tree Tavern
Have a meal at the Liberty Tree Tavern – For a thematic meal, have lunch at this colonial-era inspired restaurant in Liberty Square. The dining rooms are named after Founding Fathers, and the menu is a family-style feast of turkey, pot roast, stuffing, and other comfort foods – like a year-round Thanksgiving. It feels like dining in 1776 Philadelphia. The all-you-care-to-enjoy meal of roasted meats and Johnny Appleseed cake will fill you up, and the decor (pewter dishware, colonial flags) keeps the patriotic mood.
Magic Kingdom Flag Retreat Ceremony
As evening nears, head to Main Street U.S.A.’s Town Square – Each day at 5:00 p.m. Disney honors the U.S. flag and those who serve at this moving daily ceremony. Each day, Magic Kingdom Security and a veteran selected from the park guests retire the American flag with full fanfare. A live band plays the national anthem and patriotic tunes, and the veteran receives a certificate and souvenir pin. This reverent ritual, often overlooked by many, is a powerful moment of respect and will fill any military family with pride.
EPCOT
At EPCOT, we’ll focus on the American Adventure Pavilion in EPCOT’s World Showcase. The pavilion features a colonial-style mansion whose roots are found in the architecture of Independence Hall, Boston’s Old State House, Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. Within you will find the American Adventure attraction.
The American Adventure Attraction
Enter the American Adventure’s majestic Colonial-style theater for a 30-minute journey through U.S. history. Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin audio-animatronics hosts, and scenes from the Revolutionary War through the world wars and beyond unfold with incredibly lifelike figures. The finale features “Golden Dream” with images of great Americans, including military heroes, set to emotional music. It often brings a tear to the eye. This show beautifully captures the spirit of America – perfect for a patriotic day.
While waiting for the American Adventure show, enjoy the incredible singing of the Voices of Liberty. Catch this a cappella group performing in the pavilion’s rotunda. Dressed in 1800s costumes, they sing patriotic classics and American folk songs in eight-part harmony. The acoustics under the dome are amazing. When they sing “America the Beautiful” or the Armed Forces medley, it resonates deeply. If you have service members or veterans in your group, this can be a highlight – sometimes they’ll even acknowledge them.
When the singers aren’t performing, enjoy browsing through the American Heritage Gallery – Inside the same building as American Adventure, there’s often a rotating exhibit of American history artifacts. Past exhibits have included Navajo crafts, Apollo mission items, or Revolutionary War memorabilia. It’s a quiet spot to reflect on American heritage. Take a quick browse and you might find something relevant to military history (for example, one exhibit showcased the flags and the meanings behind the colors and symbols).
Be sure to check out the paintings on the walls of the waiting area too.
Regal Eagle Smokehouse
Have a BBQ dinner at the Regal Eagle Smokehouse, nothing is more American than a great BBQ dinner! The ambiance at Regal Eagle Smokehouse is warm and welcoming, with a rustic and patriotic theme that pays homage to the Muppets’ beloved character, Sam Eagle. It’s a great spot to relax, enjoy a meal, and soak in the rich American heritage that EPCOT’s World Showcase celebrates.
Disney’s Resorts
After dinner at EPCOT, exit the park through the International Gateway and head over to the Boardwalk for an evening stroll. Here you can watch the street performers (magicians, jugglers) – reminiscent of classic American boardwalk entertainment. Grab an ice cream cone from BoardWalk Ice Cream to complete the Americana vibe.
Flag Family at Wilderness Lodge – The Wilderness Lodge has a daily ritual where a guest family can go to the roof and assist with the flag raising there in the morning. It’s not widely advertised; you have to inquire at the front desk about being the “Flag Family.” If you can secure it, it’s an amazing experience where you climb to the very top of the Lodge, raise the U.S., state, and Disney flags, and enjoy panoramic views – a very special honor for a military family to literally raise the colors to start the day.
Flag Raising at Resort or Pledge – If staying at a Disney resort, see if they do a morning flag raising. Some resorts occasionally involve kids in raising the flag. If not, simply take a moment at your resort’s flagpole to salute or take a family photo. Shades of Green (the Armed Forces Recreation Center resort) for example has a prominent flag and military monuments – worth a visit if you’re nearby.
Bonus Ideas
Service Member Photo Ops – Take advantage of iconic photo spots to capture your family’s patriotism. In front of Main Street Station with the flag, at the American Adventure pavilion with its architecture, or by the Partners Statue (Walt and Mickey) holding a small American flag. These make for wonderful keepsakes – Disney magic mixed with love of country.
Swing by the Guest Services to pick up the complimentary “I’m Celebrating” buttons and write “Service Member” or “Veteran” on it, if a member of your family is one – you might get cast members and guests thanking you for your service throughout the day. And don’t forget to use the Disney Photopass photogs – many are happy to incorporate your patriotic gear (maybe they’ll catch you saluting or holding that flag).
Fourth of July Fireworks (Seasonal) – If you are visiting around Independence Day, you’re in for a treat. The Magic Kingdom does an extraordinary July 4th fireworks show. At the Magic Kingdom, “Disney’s Celebrate America!” is a booming, perimeter fireworks show with patriotic music and even projections of red, white, and blue on the castle.
Shades of Green Resort – Stay at Shades of Green on Walt Disney World property. This resort is exclusively for military community guests, offering deluxe-level accommodations at moderate prices. Beyond the practicality, it’s a place where you’re surrounded by fellow military families. The atmosphere is relaxed and patriotic – you’ll see military flags and maybe catch the Army Navy game on TV at the sports bar with other service members. It feels like a home base. And knowing its background (it was once a Disney resort, now owned by the DoD) makes it special. If not staying, you can still visit – perhaps dine at Mangino’s or have a drink on the patio. It’s located by the Palm and Magnolia golf courses, a very pretty setting!
Over to You
By the end of this ultimate patriotic day, you’ll have celebrated America’s history, honored those who serve, and experienced the magic of Disney in a way that’s both meaningful and memorable.
