Most military families spend a lot of time comparing ticket prices.
What many don’t realize is that where you buy your Disney military tickets can matter almost as much as what ticket you buy.
You can purchase Disney military tickets:
- At a local military installation ticket office
- In person from Shades of Green
- Long-distance through military installation ticket offices or Shades of Green
- Directly from Disney (for eligible ticket types)
The best option depends on your timeline, travel plans, and how much assistance you need during the purchasing process.
After years of helping military families plan Disney vacations—and purchasing tickets myself from multiple sources—I’ve found that each option has advantages and disadvantages that aren’t always obvious at first glance.
Option 1: Buying Military Tickets at Your Local Base Ticket Office
For decades, installation ticket offices have been the traditional place for military families to purchase Disney tickets.
Many families are already familiar with their local Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT), Leisure Travel Services (LTS), or MWR ticket office and appreciate having a real person available to answer questions.
Disney tickets were once stocked locally, allowing immediate ticket possession after purchase. For many years now, however, most military ticket offices no longer maintain Disney ticket inventory on-site. Tickets are typically ordered and shipped from a regional military ticket center and then delivered to the local office for pickup.
For military members who work on base—or families who live nearby—this can still be one of the easiest purchasing options available.
Pros
- Face-to-face assistance
- Tax-free purchases
- Can ask eligibility questions before buying
- Helpful for first-time Disney visitors
- Convenient if you work or live near the installation
Cons
- Tickets often require several days to arrive
- Limited office hours
- Disney expertise varies significantly between installations
- Requires an in-person visit
The challenge is that Disney expertise varies dramatically from one installation to another.
Some offices process Disney transactions every day. Others may only handle a handful each month. In many cases, there is little formal training beyond a binder of procedures and whatever knowledge the previous employee passed along.
I learned just how true this was when I was stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base after Military Disney Tips was already established. While purchasing Disney tickets, the employee helping me asked if I was “Steve from Military Disney Tips.”
When I told her yes, she thanked me for the website. She explained that after she and her husband PCS’d to Tyndall, she was hired into the ticket office after the previous employee had already transferred away. Her training essentially consisted of being handed a binder and told, “Here you go.”
She told me she used Military Disney Tips to learn many of the Disney ticket rules and nuances that weren’t explained anywhere else.
It’s a great reminder that some military ticket offices have extremely knowledgeable staff, while others are doing their best to learn a very complicated system.
Option 2: Buying In Person from Shades of Green
For Walt Disney World vacations, Shades of Green offers one of the most specialized military ticket offices anywhere.
The ticket office staff works with Disney tickets every day and understands military eligibility rules, activation requirements, and Walt Disney World vacation planning better than most installation ticket offices.
Shades of Green also has Disney ticket terminals connected directly to Disney’s ticketing system. In many ways, the process is similar to purchasing directly from Disney itself.
This direct connection is why Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets purchased from Shades of Green arrive pre-activated and ready to use.
Pros
- Excellent Disney expertise
- Tax-free purchases
- Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets come pre-activated
- Staff understands Disney vacation planning
- Can assist with many other Orlando attractions
Cons
- Not practical for most pre-trip purchases if buying in person
- Theme park reservations or date selections may already be limited during busy travel periods
- Waiting until arrival can reduce flexibility
That doesn’t mean the Shades of Green ticket office isn’t valuable. The staff can answer questions, help resolve ticket issues, and assist with many Orlando attractions beyond Disney. I simply wouldn’t recommend waiting until arrival to begin the ticket purchasing process.
Planning a Stay at Shades of Green?
Shades of Green is one of the most unique military benefits available for Walt Disney World vacations. From eligibility rules and room categories to transportation and military ticket sales, these guides will help you better understand Disney’s military-only resort.

Option 3: Buying Long-Distance Through Military Ticket Offices
Purchasing from military ticket offices that sell long-distance has become increasingly popular because it allows families to purchase tickets from home as part of their pre-arrival planning steps.
Many military ticket offices now offer long-distance sales online, over the phone, or through a combination of both. In many cases, purchases begin online and are finalized with a phone call to collect payment information.
This option combines much of the convenience of online purchasing with the expertise and support available through military ticket offices.
Pros
- Often available 24/7 to start the process
- No need to visit a local office
- Allows advance trip planning
- Still provides access to military ticket office expertise
- Works well for experienced Disney travelers
Cons
- Requires advance planning
- Processing times vary by office
- Some offices require follow-up phone calls to complete purchases
The Shades of Green Callback Reality
One factor many military families don’t realize is that response times vary significantly between ticket offices.
For example, Shades of Green’s long-distance ticket purchasing process requires submitting a ticket request form and then waiting for a callback to provide credit card information.
Sometimes that callback comes within a few days. Other times readers report waiting two or even three weeks. I have experienced a 3-week wait myself!
I suspect this is simply a staffing and workload issue, especially during busy travel periods.
By comparison, I’ve generally found installation ticket offices such as Patrick Space Force Base and Camp Pendleton to respond within the same day or the next business day.
So, keep in mind that response time is something to consider when planning your purchase timeline.
Option 4: Buying Military Tickets Directly from Disney
Many military families know that Disney sells military tickets directly.
What surprises many of them is where Disney does not sell them.
Disney does not sell any military tickets online, through its phone reservation center, or as part of a Walt Disney World vacation package.
If you want to buy military tickets directly from Disney, your only option is to purchase Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets in person at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Disney sells the tickets at the advertised Disney Armed Forces Salute price plus applicable tax.
Disney does not sell Regular Military Discounted Tickets; only Base Ticket Offices and Shades of Green do.
Because of these restrictions, purchasing directly from Disney is not a viable pre-trip purchasing option for military families. It is primarily useful for families who are already at the parks or who need help during their vacation.
Pros
- Immediate ticket purchase if you are already at Walt Disney World or Disneyland
- Direct access to Disney Guest Relations or ticket window Cast Members
- Useful for last-minute purchases
- Can help resolve ticket issues during your vacation
Cons
- Not available online
- Not available over the phone
- Cannot be added to a Disney vacation package
- Purchases are not tax-free
- Not useful for most advance trip planning
- Military ticket expertise varies by Cast Member
Disney can still be a valuable backup option if you arrive without tickets, need a last-minute purchase, or need help resolving a ticket issue in person.

Understanding Ticket Activation Requirements
Activation requirements depend on the type of ticket you purchase—not where you purchase it.
Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets purchased from Shades of Green are pre-activated because Shades of Green uses Disney ticketing terminals connected directly to Disney’s system.
Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets purchased through military ticket offices other than Shades of Green require activation before first use.
Regular Military Discounted Tickets at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland do not require activation. At Walt Disney World, you will select your first day of use during the purchase, and at Disneyland, this type of ticket may be used any day.
Timing Matters More Than Most Families Realize
Buying Months Ahead
This is usually the sweet spot.
You have time to compare options, receive tickets, make date selections if required, and resolve any issues before your vacation begins.
Buying Shortly Before Travel
This is where timing becomes critical.
The question is no longer which ticket office you use. The question becomes whether you have enough time for the office to process your order, for tickets to arrive, and for you to complete any required planning steps before departure.
Often buying long-distance is the fastest option as the tickets are delivered electronically. Just be cognizant of potential long waits to complete the process if using Shades of Green.
STEVE SAYS:Â If I have a short notice trip to Disney World or Disneyland, I’d use Patrick Space Force Base for WDW (remembering that SAlute tickets will not be activated and I’ll need to do that on arrival) and Camp Pendleton for Disneyland.
Buying During Your Vacation
While Shades of Green makes this possible, purchasing after arrival can limit your options.
Depending on crowd levels and availability, you may discover that the dates or reservations you wanted are no longer available.
| Factor | Local Base Ticket Office | Shades of Green (In Person) | Long-Distance Purchase | Disney (In Person) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Available Before Trip | Yes | Limited | Yes | No |
| Face-to-Face Assistance | Excellent | Excellent | No | Yes |
| Disney Expertise | Varies | Excellent | Varies | Excellent |
| Tax-Free Purchase | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Regular Military Discounted Tickets | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Pre-Activated Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets | No | Yes | Only Shades of Green | No |
| Best for First-Time Visitors | Excellent | Excellent | Good | Fair |
| Best for Experienced Visitors | Good | Good | Excellent | Poor |
| Best for Last-Minute Needs | Fair | Good | Depends on How Close | Excellent |
Which Option Do I Recommend?
For most military families today, I recommend purchasing through a military ticket office that offers long-distance sales.
You get the convenience of handling everything from home while still working with people who understand military ticket rules and Disney vacation planning.
If you’re new to Disney military tickets, unsure which option is best, or have unusual circumstances, your local installation ticket office can be an excellent resource.
Regardless of which option you choose, the biggest piece of advice I can give is simple:
Give yourself plenty of time.
Most ticket problems are easy to solve when you start early. They become much harder when your vacation is only days away.
How do you buy your Disney military tickets?
Do you use your local base ticket office, purchase long-distance from another military ticket office, buy through Shades of Green, or wait until you arrive at Disney?
I’d love to hear about your experiences. Tell us which ticket office you use, how the process worked, how quickly you received your tickets, and any tips you have for other military families.
