The most convenient—and iconic—place to stay if Magic Kingdom is your top priority.

If your Walt Disney World trip revolves around Magic Kingdom, there’s one group of resorts that stands above the rest: the Monorail Resorts.

These are some of the most well-known and desirable hotels on Disney property, offering unmatched convenience, incredible theming, and that unmistakable “Disney bubble” feeling from the moment you arrive.

But they also come with a higher price tag—and for military families, that raises an important question: are they actually worth it?

Let’s break it all down so you can decide if a Monorail Resort is the right fit for your trip.

Quick Facts About Disney World Monorail Resorts

  • Location: Magic Kingdom Resort Area
  • Resorts: Contemporary, Polynesian Village, Grand Floridian
  • Resort Category: Deluxe
  • Transportation: Monorail, boats, buses, walking paths (select resorts)
  • Best For: Magic Kingdom-focused trips, convenience, premium stays
  • Eligible for Military Discounts: Yes, through the Disney Armed Forces Salute (availability varies)

Location Overview

The Monorail Resorts are located in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area, positioned around Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

This puts you closer to Magic Kingdom than anywhere else on Disney property. In fact, depending on where you stay, you can get to the park by monorail, boat, or even on foot.

For families planning mid-day breaks, rope drop strategies, or late-night park exits, this location can make a huge difference in both convenience and overall energy level during your trip.

Transportation: Why the Monorail Matters

The biggest selling point of these resorts is right in the name: the Disney Monorail.

The Resort Monorail loop connects all three Monorail Resorts with Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC). From the TTC, you can transfer to the EPCOT Monorail line.

Here’s what that means in real terms:

  • Magic Kingdom: Direct monorail access (no buses required)
  • EPCOT: Monorail transfer at the TTC
  • Other parks: Bus transportation

But the Monorail isn’t the only option—and that flexibility is what makes this area so powerful.

  • Walking: The Contemporary and Grand Floridian (and the Ploynesian to a lesser extent) offer walking paths to the Magic Kingdom
  • Boats: All three resorts offer relaxing boat transportation to the Magic Kingdom
  • Buses: Available to all parks and Disney Springs

This gives you multiple ways to get to the same place—which can save you a lot of time when crowds build.

The Monorail Resorts

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary is the most convenient resort on all of Walt Disney World property when it comes to Magic Kingdom access.

You can walk to the park in about 10 minutes, which is a huge advantage at both park opening and closing. The Monorail also runs directly through the resort’s main building, making transportation incredibly simple.

The theme is modern and a bit less “Disney” compared to the others, but the location is unbeatable.

Best for: Convenience, short walks, efficient park access

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

The Polynesian is one of the original Disney resorts and remains a fan favorite thanks to its tropical atmosphere, great dining, and strong overall vibe.

It offers Monorail access, boat transportation, and one of the best overall resort experiences on property.

It’s also a great option for families who want a balance of convenience and immersive theming.

Best for: Atmosphere, dining, classic Disney feel

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Grand Floridian is Disney’s flagship resort, offering the most luxurious experience on property.

It features elegant Victorian theming, signature dining, and both Monorail and walking access to Magic Kingdom.

While it’s typically the most expensive option, military discounts can sometimes make it more attainable than expected.

Best for: Luxury, special occasions, premium experiences

Who Should Stay at a Monorail Resort?

EPCOT's Main Entrance from the EPCOT Monorail Station

Spaceship Earth and EPCOT’s Main Entrance from the EPCOT Monorail Station

These resorts are not for everyone—but for the right trip, they can completely change your Disney experience.

You should strongly consider a Monorail Resort if:

  • You plan to spend most of your time at the Magic Kingdom
  • You want easy mid-day breaks back at your resort
  • You’re traveling with young kids or strollers
  • You value convenience over price
  • You want a “full Disney experience” outside the parks

On the flip side, you may want to look elsewhere if:

  • You’re trying to maximize budget
  • Your trip is focused on EPCOT or Hollywood Studios
  • You don’t plan to return to your resort during the day

Military Discount Considerations

All three Monorail Resorts are eligible for the Disney Armed Forces Salute Room Discount, but availability can be limited—especially during peak travel seasons.

Here are a few key things military families should keep in mind:

  • Discounted rooms at these resorts can sell out quickly
  • Comparing against other Deluxe or Moderate options is important
  • Sometimes, a non-Monorail Deluxe Resort offers better availability or pricing

It’s always worth checking multiple resorts and dates to find the best value for your trip.

Final Thoughts

The Monorail Resorts are some of the most iconic places to stay at Walt Disney World—and for good reason.

If Magic Kingdom is the heart of your trip, there’s simply no more convenient location on property.

That said, convenience comes at a cost. For many military families, the key is finding the right balance between location, price, and overall trip goals.

If it fits your budget and your plans, staying on the Monorail loop can take your Disney vacation to the next level.
