Shades of Green vs Disney Resorts: Which Is Actually Cheaper in 2026?

14 June 2026 by Steve Bell 4 Comments

Comparing Disney World Resorts to Shades of Green is not just about finding the cheapest room.

One of the biggest decisions military families make when planning a Walt Disney World vacation is whether to stay at a Disney Resort or at Shades of Green.

Shades of Green

At first, this looks like a simple price comparison.

Check the Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount. Check your Shades of Green category. Pick the cheaper room.

But that is not the whole decision.

The better question is:

Which option gives your family the best overall value?

That includes room price, taxes, parking, transportation, convenience, room size, Disney benefits, vacation stress, and how your family actually tours Walt Disney World.

This page uses 2026 Disney resort prices and Shades of Green FY26 and FY27 rates to show how the numbers compare. But the charts are only the starting point. I’ll also explain what the numbers mean in real-world military family planning.

Review Shades of Green Magnolia Wing Renovated Room

Shades of Green

REALITY CHECK: The cheapest room is not always the cheapest vacation. A room that saves you money on paper can cost you time, transportation convenience, energy, and flexibility. Sometimes that tradeoff is worth it. Sometimes it is not.

Quick Answer: Is Shades of Green Cheaper Than Disney Resorts?

The short answer is: it depends on your Shades of Green category, your Disney resort category, your dates, and how much transportation convenience matters to your family.

But there are some useful patterns.

Situation What the Price Comparison Usually Shows Reality-First Guidance
Shades of Green Category 1 Often comparable to or cheaper than Disney Value Resorts, especially when Disney discounts are unavailable or weekend prices spike Usually the strongest pure-price Shades comparison
Shades of Green Category 2 Can be higher than Disney Values but often competitive with Disney Moderates Price both carefully; transportation and room size may decide the winner
Shades of Green Category 3 Often more expensive than Disney Values and sometimes close to Disney Moderates Category 3 guests should compare total value, not just room rate
Holiday and Salute blockout periods Shades often looks much stronger when Disney discounts are unavailable Shades can be a major savings tool during high-price Disney periods
Families driving to the parks Shades parking costs can reduce savings Add parking costs before deciding
Families relying on resort transportation Disney transportation may justify a higher room price Transportation convenience has real value

STEVE SAYS: Your pay grade really matters in this consideration! There is quite a difference in Shades of Green nightly rates between Categories 1 and 3! This naturally affects your price comparison to Disney’s rates.

What This Comparison Includes

The charts below compare standard rooms at Shades of Green to standard rooms at Disney Value and Moderate Resorts.

Shades of Green Resort is an Armed Forces Recreation Center

Shades of Green Standard Guest Room

The charts are based on Shades of Green’s standard rates. While Shades of Green does offer discounted rates and packages at various times of the year, I have not included those discounts because Shades of Green discount dates, terms, and rates can change.

  • Find Your Shades of Green Price Category and Regular Room Rate
  • Check for Shades of Green Discounts

The charts below are based on:

  • Disney’s 2026 Armed Forces Salute room discount rates
  • Disney Value Resorts at up to 15% off rack rates most of the year and 20% off during summer
  • Disney Moderate Resorts at up to 20% off rack rates most of the year and 25% off during summer
  • Shades of Green FY26 and FY27 standard rates
  • Standard rooms at both Disney and Shades of Green
Disney’s All-Star Resort Room

Pop Century Standard Room

Starting in 2018, the Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount moved away from a simple set percentage off. The discounts are now listed as “up to” a percentage. See more details on how Disney Armed Forces Salute room discounts work.

Disney rates shown here are plus tax, with the full Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount applied. Shades of Green rates are tax-free.

Shades of Green rates change on October 1 with the next fiscal year’s rates. Disney resort prices vary by season, date, and day of the week.

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

CAribbean Beach Standard Room – King Option

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Over the years, it’s become a little harder to compare Shades of Green to Disney’s resorts. Disney has added more price periods through the years and modified the way they offer military room discounts as well, now offering variable discounts that decrease and then disappear as their room inventory fills. Whereas in the past, it was a flat rate percentage all the time, no matter how full their rooms were.

Price Is Only One Part of the Cost

Room price matters. It may be the largest single line item in your comparison.

But it is not the only cost.

When comparing Shades of Green to Disney Resorts, military families should also think about:

  • Room taxes
  • Parking
  • Theme park transportation
  • Walking distance
  • Room size
  • Access to Disney resort benefits
  • Dining convenience
  • How much time your family wants to spend moving around Disney property

PRACTICAL LESSON: If Shades saves your family $300 over the trip and transportation works well for you, that is a real win. If the savings are $80 and your family is frustrated every morning and night by transportation logistics, the cheaper room may not feel cheaper by the end of the trip.

Planning a Disney Vacation?

Military Disney discounts can save families a significant amount of money, but figuring out eligibility, tickets, resorts, transportation, and Lightning Lane strategies can get confusing quickly. These guides are a great place to start.

Daily Rate Charts

The daily rate charts show how Disney’s resort prices fluctuate by season and by day of the week.

Friday and Saturday nights are almost always more expensive. Thursday and Sunday often fall in the middle. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and sometimes Thursday and Sunday are usually the lowest-price nights.

These daily charts are most useful for shorter stays because you can clearly see Disney’s weekday and weekend price swings.

Color code for the charts below:

  • Red – Disney Moderate
  • Blue – Disney Value
  • Teal – Shades of Green Category 3
  • Purple – Shades of Green Category 2
  • Green – Shades of Green Category 1

Here is what the Disney Armed Forces Salute discount chart shows:

  • Shades of Green Category 1: Shades of Green is comparable to Disney Value Resorts except when the Salute is not offered during Spring Break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Shades of Green is cheaper than Disney Moderate Resorts.
  • Shades of Green Category 2: Shades of Green is more expensive than Disney Value Resorts except during Spring Break and Christmas. Compared to Disney Moderates, Category 2 is cheaper except midweek in January.
  • Shades of Green Category 3: Shades of Green is more expensive than Disney Value Resorts except during Spring Break and Christmas. Disney Moderates are more expensive except in January, February, and summer.

What this chart actually means: Disney’s discounted resort rates can be very competitive during lower-priced periods and weekdays. Shades of Green becomes more attractive when Disney prices rise, when Salute room discounts are unavailable, or when your Shades category is lower.

Below is the same comparison without any Disney discount applied. This is not the military-family best-case scenario, but it shows how much Disney’s rack rates can change the comparison.

If no Disney discount is available, Shades of Green is cheaper than Disney Moderate Resorts throughout the year. Compared to Disney Value Resorts, Shades is cheaper on many weekend dates for Category 2 and Category 3 guests and cheaper most of the year for Category 1 guests.

REALITY CHECK: The Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount can make Disney Resorts much more competitive. But when Disney discounts disappear, Shades of Green often becomes much harder to beat on price.

Weekly Rate Chart

The weekly rate chart shows the average room price for a Monday through Sunday stay.

When you request a Disney room quote, Disney shows the average nightly price across your stay even though each night may have a different price. This smooths out weekend spikes and seasonal changes.

This chart is more useful for longer stays because the daily highs and lows are averaged together.

The first chart shows the maximum Disney Armed Forces Salute discount applied.

The second chart shows the undiscounted Disney rates.

What this chart actually means: For longer stays, Disney’s high and low nights balance out more. That can make a discounted Disney Value or Moderate look closer to Shades than the daily chart suggests. For shorter stays, especially over weekends, daily spikes matter more.

Shades of Green Advantages That Affect Value

Shades of Green Fold Down Bed

Shades of Green can be a very strong value for military families, especially when you look beyond the base room rate.

Larger Rooms

Shades of Green standard rooms are larger than standard rooms at Disney Value and Moderate Resorts. This matters for larger families, longer trips, strollers, scooters, luggage, and families who spend more time in the room.

Tax-Free Room Rates

Shades of Green room rates are tax-free. Disney resort rates are subject to 12.5% to 13.5% hotel tax, even after the Armed Forces Salute discount is applied.

Predictable Pricing

Shades of Green standard rates are based on category and fiscal year. They do not swing by day of week or Disney pricing season the way Disney Resort rates do.

Military Ticket Office Access

Shades of Green has a military ticket office on-site. That can be a meaningful convenience for guests who need tickets or ticket help during their trip.

BEST FOR FAMILY TYPE: Shades of Green is often strongest for Category 1 guests, larger families who value room space, repeat Disney visitors who already understand transportation logistics, and families whose primary goal is controlling lodging costs.

Disney Resort Advantages That Affect Value

All About Walt Disney World's Skyliner

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Skyliner Station

Disney Resorts can still be the better choice for many families, even when Shades of Green looks cheaper on paper.

Disney Transportation Convenience

Disney Resorts place you directly inside the Disney transportation network. Depending on the resort, that can mean buses, boats, monorail, Skyliner, or walking paths.

That convenience can matter a lot during a long trip.

Disney Immersion

Some families simply want to be surrounded by Disney theming, Disney music, Disney dining, Disney Cast Members, and the 24/7 Disney bubble.

That is not a spreadsheet item, but it is real value for many families.

Room Charging and MagicBand Convenience

Disney Resort guests can charge purchases to their room and receive the full Disney Resort MagicBand experience tied to their reservation.

Shades of Green guests can use MagicBands for park admission and PhotoPass, but not as room keys or for room charging.

Some Families Need Simpler Logistics

If your family has young children, mobility challenges, stroller fatigue, or first-time Disney stress, a Disney Resort may reduce friction even when it costs more.

STEVE’S OPINION: We switched to Disney Resorts from Shades of Green many years ago. For us, it’s both the immersion in the Disney atmosphere and the transportation convenience that seals the deal!

Transportation Reality Check

Transportation is one of the biggest value differences between Shades of Green and Disney Resorts.

Shades of Green transportation can work well, but it is not the same as being inside Disney’s full resort transportation system.

Shades of Green runs limited resort bus routes. Magic Kingdom and EPCOT transportation goes to the Transportation and Ticket Center, where you then use Disney transportation to reach the park. Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom share a route. Disney Springs and Typhoon Lagoon share a route. Bus transportation is not provided for separate-ticket events such as Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

That does not mean Shades transportation is bad.

It means it has to be part of the value equation.

TRANSPORTATION REALITY CHECK: Saving money on a room feels great, but if your family hates the extra transportation steps every day, the savings may not feel as valuable by the end of the trip. On the other hand, if your family is patient, experienced, or willing to use rideshare when needed, Shades can still be an excellent value.

Other Factors That Affect Price and Scheduling

A Mears Connect Bus - Getting to Shades of Green

Airport Transportation

Guests staying at Shades of Green and Disney Resorts must arrange airport transportation at their own cost.

For airport transportation, see the Walt Disney World airport transportation section of my Transportation Overview Page.

Shades of Green guests pay to park at Shades of Green. The current parking rate listed on this page is $17 per night. Valet parking is currently unavailable.

Theme Park Parking

Shades of Green guests pay the current Disney theme park parking rate if they drive to the parks. The current rate listed on this page is $35 per day.

You need to factor parking into your total cost comparison if you plan to drive.

Disney Resort Benefits and Shades of Green Benefits

Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours

Disney Resort guests and Shades of Green guests are eligible for Early Theme Park Entry.

Guests staying at Shades of Green, Disney Resorts, and the Swan and Dolphin Resorts can purchase and make Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass selections on the earlier on-site guest timeline.

Lightning Lane

Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass Information

Room Charging

Disney Resort guests can charge purchases to their Disney Resort room throughout Walt Disney World.

Shades of Green guests can charge purchases to their room only at Shades of Green.

MagicBands

Shades of Green guests do not receive the ability to purchase discounted MagicBands as part of their reservation. That benefit is for Disney Resort guests.

You can buy MagicBands from the Disney Store or in Walt Disney World gift shops after arrival. Shades guests can use MagicBands for theme park admission and PhotoPass, but not for room keys or room charges.

Disney Magic Bands for Shades of Green

Which Option Is Better for Your Family?

Here is the simplest way to think about the decision.

Family Type Usually Better Fit Why
Budget-focused Category 1 guests Shades of Green Strong room-price value, tax-free rates, and larger rooms
First-time Walt Disney World families Often Disney Resort Simpler transportation, stronger Disney immersion, and fewer logistics
Families of five Often Shades of Green Shades standard rooms sleep five plus a crib and offer more space
Families prioritizing transportation convenience Often Disney Resort Disney transportation may reduce friction, especially with young kids or mobility concerns
Repeat Disney visitors Often Shades of Green Experienced visitors may be more comfortable managing transportation tradeoffs
Families traveling during Disney discount gaps Often Shades of Green Shades becomes more attractive when Disney room discounts are unavailable
Families who value Disney theming above all Disney Resort The Disney bubble has emotional value that Shades does not fully replace

STEVE SAYS: No family is the same! What’s right for me probably isn’t right for you! The key when deciding where to stay is to focus on what’s most important to you!

Details Behind the Charts

Walt Disney World Room View Categories - Do They Matter at Value and Moderate Resorts?

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

The Disney Resorts quoted are standard view rooms at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s All-Star Music.

Caribbean Beach is a typically priced Disney Moderate Resort. All-Star Music is representative of the All-Stars. Pop Century is a little more expensive, and Art of Animation is much more expensive.

Price quotes for Disney resorts were obtained from the disneyworld.com website. The applicable maximum Disney Armed Forces Salute discount was subtracted, and then hotel taxes were added back in. Hotel tax is 12.5% at all Disney resorts except the All-Stars, where it is 13.5%.

The Moderate Resorts are fairly similar in price, with about a $10 to $30 per night variance. The Fort Wilderness Cabins also fall under the Moderate discount category but cost quite a bit more.

The Value Resorts have multiple price levels. The All-Stars are the cheapest, followed by Pop Century, and then Art of Animation Suites. The Art of Animation Little Mermaid rooms are not eligible for Disney Armed Forces Salute room discounts.

Final Recommendation: Shades of Green or Disney Resort?

Use the charts to understand the pricing pattern, but do not stop there.

If your primary goal is lowering room cost, Shades of Green deserves serious consideration, especially for Category 1 guests, larger families, longer stays, and trips during periods when Disney discounts are unavailable.

If your primary goal is convenience, Disney immersion, transportation simplicity, or first-trip ease, a discounted Disney Resort may be worth paying more.

If the price difference is large, Shades of Green can be an excellent value.

If the price difference is small, think hard about transportation, walking, parking, and how your family actually vacations.

REALITY-FIRST GUIDANCE: Do not choose based on room rate alone. Choose based on the complete vacation cost and the experience your family actually wants.

Disney Resorts vs. Shades of Green Price FAQ

Is Shades of Green usually cheaper than a Disney Resort with the Armed Forces Salute?

It depends on your Shades of Green category, dates, and day of the week. Disney’s rates swing by season and weekdays versus weekends, while Shades of Green standard rates stay flat throughout the fiscal year. Category 1 is often comparable to Disney Value Resorts, while Categories 2 and 3 can be higher than Disney Values but competitive with Moderates, especially when weekend spikes or blockout periods push Disney rates up.

Do I pay hotel tax at Shades of Green?

No. Shades of Green room rates are tax-exempt. Disney resort rates are subject to hotel tax, even after the Armed Forces Salute discount is applied.

When do Shades of Green rates change?

Shades of Green updates rates each fiscal year on October 1. The charts on this page show the relevant fiscal-year rates for the comparison period.

How do Disney’s price swings work?

Disney divides the year into multiple price seasons and also varies cost by day of the week. Fridays and Saturdays are often the most expensive. Monday through Wednesday are frequently the lowest. Disney quotes usually show an averaged nightly price across the stay.

Are Shades of Green discounts included in these charts?

No. Because Shades of Green promotions can shift dates, terms, and prices, the charts compare Disney pricing against standard Shades of Green rates for consistency.

How do parking costs affect the total?

Disney Resort guests do not pay nightly resort parking and get free theme park parking. Shades of Green guests pay for parking at Shades and pay the current Disney theme park parking rate if they drive to the parks. Add those costs to your comparison if you plan to use a car.

Do Shades of Green guests get Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours?

Yes. Shades of Green guests qualify for Early Entry at all parks and Extended Evening Hours on select nights, similar to Disney Deluxe Resort guests.

What about Lightning Lane timing for Shades of Green vs. Disney Resorts?

Shades of Green guests can make Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass selections on the earlier timeline offered to eligible on-site guests.

Is there a simple way to decide which is cheaper for my dates?

Use the charts to understand pricing patterns, then price your exact dates. Compare a Disney Value or Moderate with the Armed Forces Salute discount applied, including tax, against your Shades category for the same nights. Add parking and transportation differences. For longer trips, compare weekly averages. For short stays, pay attention to weekend spikes.

Can I stack Disney room discounts with the Armed Forces Salute?

No. Disney room offers do not stack. You use the single best eligible discount for your dates and resort.

Does my Shades of Green category change the math a lot?

Yes. Category 1 often undercuts or matches Disney Value Resorts. Categories 2 and 3 compare more closely to Disney Moderate Resorts. Always check your category and the fiscal-year rate table for precise comparisons.

No question here, just commenting. Thanks for the information!! We’re Cat 2 (Retired, 100%) and this is very very interesting to read that even with tax figured back in, at times, a Moderate is a better price than SOG?! Always something new to learn from MDT! This is a detail to keep in mind for any late winter travels to Disney!!
I’ll have to look at this, plus add in the resort parking fees (we typically have a rental car), when I compare future trips. Love it!
    Thanks Steve 🙂

      Hi there Amy,

Thanks so much!I love sharing info with our community.

Definitely look at all options and price them out for your next trip!

There are still only 2 moderates open right now, but Port Orleans will open as demand picks up.

We will traveling to WDW the end of January 2025 and will be staying at The Shades of Green Resort for the first time since Dec 2008 when we stayed for only one night.
We have always stayed at the Deluxe resorts whether at Disneyland or WDW. However, the price started going through the roof about 2016 and haven’t slowed down since (even with Armed Forces Salute discounts they are outrageous.) They finally crossed the red line for us, and we won’t be staying there any longer.
Your articles about Shades of Green are what sold us on the idea of staying there, Steve. Thank you!

      Hi there Peggy,

I hope that you enjoy the switch!!!

As you probably know, I stay all over property and Shades of Green is definitely different than the Disney Deluxes in many ways, some for the better, some not.

If you think about it after the trip, I’d love if you shared your thoughts!
