A lot of parents dream of taking their children to Walt Disney World and putting that huge smile on their kid’s faces.
More than we like to admit, our kids look at us as parents to determine how they feel about a situation, event, or moment in time! How do you think it looks if only mom is fully invested in the fun?
Come on, dad, this article is about letting your hair down, so to speak. Shake off the fatigues after a long week and enjoy that much deserved leave and creating some core memories with your kids.
Wear the Uniform
No, not that one… You can’t walk through the gate of a Disney park without seeing a group wearing matching family shirts. Listen, we know they’re not really practical after vacation, and are a little… Okay, yes they are dumb.
But consider this – Your family sees, loves, and respects your serious side. They see you put on a uniform on a daily basis. Show your kids that you have fun side! Put on the Mickey shirt sporting the proud name, “Dad”.
Don’t Be “That” Guy
Piggy backing off of the shirts – Now that we have gotten you to wear the shirt, please don’t be the guy who uses a Disney shirt to complain. We’ve all seen it, the shirt that exclaims, “Most Expensive Day Ever.” Yes, Disney is expensive. It’s no secret. But what is the idea behind making someone feel bad about it while you are there?
Have fun! Let loose! Are you sensing a theme here, soldier?
Time to Train – You have a PT Test Coming Up!
It’s a different type of PT test, one of endurance! You are dad, hear you roar! Disney days are long days, typically around 12 hours and about 10 miles. That’s a lot for an adult, now imagine it for a small child. Here’s where you come in…
Those adorable little offspring are going to need your help. You need to be ready to carry all the bags and possibly the tiny humans. How you may ask? We love this guy on social media and his version of Disney Dad Training.

Take a Back Seat
You’re used to being the guy in charge and controlling the situation. But, there’s a really good chance that from the moment you and your wife decided to plan this trip, she has planned a whole dining, attraction, and fun itinerary.
Our recommendation is to just ride the wave! Let her plan and be in charge for once.
Say It With Me: RELAX
Did you know that there are over 150 bars in Walt Disney World? We recommend you make good use of them and relax. Many are in the parks! Got your drink? Good. Now repeat after me: YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUSH EVERYONE’S LIMITS TO “GET YOUR MONEY’S WORTH”.
The temptation is there. You want to get in the parks at rope drop and stay all the way until close. You want to enjoy the perks of rope drop, like shorter lines and cooler weather, but you also want to squeeze out every last minute and see fireworks go boom. Trust me when I say that can only end one way – Tired tantrums, tears, and next thing you know, everyone is pissed off.
Alternate early days and late days, and plan to be there around 6-8 hours max if you have kids. The best thing we have every done for our Disney vacations is to plan in a day off for the kids. We like to do 2 days in the parks with the kids and then give them a day off, and then finish the vacation with 2 more park days.
Another option is the mid-day break. Do that rope drop in the morning, then around noon leave. Either get lunch in the park before leaving or at your resort. Then Chill out!!! Take a nap, hit the pool, or both. And a big bonus in the summer, put on dry clothes before heading to the park just before dinner. Then you and the kiddos will be able to last for the fireworks.
Watch the Big Game
It’s okay to also be yourself on vacation. You deserve a break from the grind to. If you want to catch the big game while on vacation it’s allowed. Just do us moms a favor: COMMUNICATE.
If we know ahead of time that you want to have Thursday night or Sunday afternoon by yourself to watch what’s important to you, it’s great. We’ll plan an excursion without you while you enjoy the game.
