History of Circle-Vision 360
The history of Circle-Vision 360 at Disney traces back to its original inception at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort. The concept emerged from Walt Disney’s vision to create immersive experiences that transport guests to different places and times.
Circle-Vision 360 technology made its debut in 1967 in Disneyland with the opening of the America the Beautiful attraction in the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. This groundbreaking presentation showcased panoramic footage of the United States, offering guests a breathtaking visual journey across the nation’s diverse landscapes and iconic landmarks.
Circle-Vision 360 is filmed with 9 cameras on a mount arranged in a circle pointing outward. This mount with the cameras is then attached to various means of moving (dollies, automotive vehicles, helicopters, planes, and boats) it in order to film the sequences. The individual films are then projected in the circular theatre by 9 projectors.
Viewers stand in the theatre, which has rails in rows to lean against and watch the show on the screens arranged in a circle around the room. The projection technology has the ability to show a 360 view captured by all 9 cameras, the same scene on all screens, or different scenes on each. Whit an odd number of screens, the projectors are behind the walls and project on the screen located across the theatre from the each projector.
Over the years, Circle-Vision 360 continued to evolve and innovate, with Disney Imagineers refining the technology to enhance the immersive experience for guests. The format was used in various attractions across different Disney parks, including Wonders of China at EPCOT’s China Pavilion and O Canada! at EPCOT’s Canada Pavilion.
In 2007, “O Canada!” underwent a significant update, incorporating the latest advancements in Circle-Vision 360 technology and featuring a new film narrated by Canadian actor Martin Short. Renamed O Canada! with Martin Short, the attraction continued to captivate audiences with its stunning visuals and informative narrative.
In 2020, O Canada! with Martin Short underwent another transformation, becoming Canada Far and Wide. This updated attraction retained the immersive Circle-Vision 360 format while featuring a new film narrated by Canadian actors Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. The refreshed experience offers guests a contemporary perspective on Canada’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern achievements.
Today, Circle-Vision 360 remains an integral part of the Disney theme park experience, transporting guests on journeys around the world and beyond. Whether exploring the majestic landscapes of Canada or marveling at the wonders of distant lands, Circle-Vision 360 continues to delight audiences with its immersive storytelling and breathtaking visuals.
