Disney Transportation for Military Families

Transportation can shape your entire vacation. From getting from the airport to your resort to figuring out buses, monorails, boats, parking, and rideshare, knowing how to get around can save both time and money. For military families staying at Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, or Shades of Green, transportation planning can also affect whether you need a rental car, how early you need to leave for dining reservations, and how easily you can reach other theme parks in the Orlando area.

This Transportation Overview page brings together our most helpful guides on airport transportation, getting around Walt Disney World, Disneyland transportation basics, Shades of Green transportation, parking, and rental cars. Whether you are staying on Disney property, at Shades of Green, or planning to split time between Disney and other Orlando attractions, the guides below will help you build a smarter transportation plan.

If you only read one page first, start with our Your Guide to Walt Disney World Transportation. It is the best overall starting point for understanding how transportation works across Walt Disney World.

Transportation Overview

Featured Transportation Guides

If you are just getting started, these are the best transportation pages to read first. Together they cover airport arrival, getting around Walt Disney World, and the unique needs of Shades of Green guests.

  • Your Guide to Walt Disney World Transportation — The main overview of Walt Disney World transportation options.
  • Airport Transportation to Walt Disney World & Shades of Green — Compare airport transportation choices before you arrive.
  • Shades of Green Transit Navigator — The best routes from Shades of Green to every park, resort, and Disney Springs.
  • The Best Way to Get to Universal Studios from Disney World — Helpful if you are splitting your vacation between Disney and Universal.

Trip Preparation and Travel

Start smart and stress less: these planning resources will help you think through travel days, luggage, airport transfers, and what to bring for resort and park transportation. A little preparation makes buses, boats, monorails, and rideshare much easier once your vacation begins.

  • Military Family’s Walt Disney World Comprehensive Vacation Planning and Preparation Guide — A strong starting point for the big-picture planning side of your trip.
  • Military Disney Tips Disney Packing Checklist — Helpful for transportation days, park days, and arrival-day logistics.

Orlando International Airport Information

Flying into Orlando International Airport? These guides can help you navigate terminals, baggage claim, ground transportation, and one especially helpful military resource at the airport.

  • Your Guide to Orlando International Airport — What to know before arriving at MCO.
  • Orlando International Airport’s USO Welcome Center — A useful stop for eligible military families flying into Orlando.

Airport Transportation to Walt Disney World & Shades of Green

Disney’s Magical Express ended in January 2022, so guests now need to choose from paid airport transportation options such as Mears Connect Driven by Sunshine, rideshare, private car service, shared vans, or rental cars. Shades of Green guests were never eligible for Magical Express, so this planning step has always been especially important for military families staying there.

Mears Connect Driven by Sunshine serves Walt Disney World resorts and Shades of Green, making it one of the better-known paid shuttle options from Orlando International Airport. Depending on your family size, luggage needs, and schedule, rideshare or a rental car may still be a better value.

  • Airport Transportation to Walt Disney World & Shades of Green — A broader look at your airport transfer options.
  • Mears Connect Driven by Sunshine — The paid shuttle replacement for Disney’s old Magical Express service.
  • Mears Connect and Sunshine Flyer Merger — Background on the combined service.
  • Getting to Shades of Green — Transportation options specifically for Shades of Green guests.
  • Shades of Green Transit Navigator: Best Routes to Every Park, Resort & Disney Springs — A valuable guide once you are on property.

Disneyland Transportation Basics

Flying into SNA, LGB, or LAX? Disneyland transportation is simpler than Walt Disney World transportation, but your airport choice still affects both cost and convenience. Rideshare is often the easiest option, while shuttles and private cars may make more sense for larger groups or families traveling with strollers and car seats.

Lyft – $5 credit toward your first ride when you sign up using this link (first ride only).

Getting Around Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World runs a massive transportation network that includes buses, monorails, boats, parking trams, and the Disney Skyliner. Disney Resort guests can use Walt Disney World transportation at no extra charge, and Shades of Green guests can also use Disney transportation in addition to the Shades of Green bus system. Rideshare and Minnie Vans can be useful when you want more direct service.

  • Your Guide to Walt Disney World Transportation — Start here for the overall transportation picture.
  • Walt Disney World’s Skyliner — A favorite for guests staying at Skyliner resorts or visiting EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • Walt Disney World’s Monorail System — How the monorail works and where it goes.
  • The Magic Kingdom Ferry Boats — Helpful for guests arriving through the Transportation and Ticket Center.
  • Walt Disney World’s Friendships — The boats serving the EPCOT resort area.
  • Using Uber and Lyft at Walt Disney World — When rideshare may save time.
  • Walt Disney World’s Minnie Van Service — Disney’s premium point-to-point transportation option.
  • Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) — Important for Magic Kingdom-area transportation and parking.
  • Disney Springs’ High-Tech Parking Garage — Helpful if you plan to drive to Disney Springs.
  • Walking at Walt Disney World Overview — Sometimes the best transportation option is simply walking.

For Shades of Green guests, transportation planning matters even more. Uber, Lyft, and Minnie Vans serve Shades of Green, and the resort also operates its own small bus fleet. The walkway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort remains closed, so you should not count on walking that route when planning park or dining transportation.

Getting from Walt Disney World to Universal and Other Orlando Theme Parks

If you are splitting your trip between Walt Disney World and other Orlando parks, transportation can get more complicated. Taxis and rideshare to Universal Orlando or SeaWorld can add up quickly, so it is worth comparing costs for rideshare, shuttle services, and rental cars before your trip.

The Best Way to Get to Universal Studios from Disney World

Rental Cars

Prefer your own wheels? A rental car can make sense if you plan to leave Disney property often, visit multiple Orlando parks, or simply want maximum flexibility. Walt Disney World’s Car Care Center remains a convenient on-property option with Alamo, National, and Enterprise locations and a complimentary shuttle from Disney Resort hotels and even the parks when scheduled in advance.

Book your vehicle online or call (407) 824-3470 to book or schedule a shuttle pick-up appointment.

These direct links can make the Car Care Center locations easier to find online:

  • Enterprise
  • Alamo
  • National

Uber – Free ride up to $15 by signing up via this link for Uber (or use the promo code steveb14703ue if the link doesn’t work). This promo is for your first ride only; any unused value expires.

Parking

Parking costs can have a real impact on your budget, especially if you are staying at Shades of Green, driving to the parks, or adding a rental car to your trip. Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests receive complimentary standard parking at Disney Resort hotels and Disney theme parks, while Shades of Green and Swan and Dolphin guests should plan for separate parking charges.

Walt Disney World Resort Guests:
Disney Resort hotel guests receive complimentary standard parking at Disney Resort hotels and Disney theme parks.

Disney Springs’ High-Tech Parking Garage

Shades of Green Guests:
Shades of Green currently charges $17 per night for self-parking in its garage. If you drive to the Disney parks, standard theme park parking is currently $35 per day, with preferred parking higher depending on the date and park.

  • Standard parking: car or motorcycle – $35 per day
  • Preferred parking: car or motorcycle – $50, $55, or $60 per day
  • Oversized vehicle parking – $40 per day

Swan and Dolphin Guests:

  • Self-Parking: $36 per night, plus tax (maximum 5-night charge for Walt Disney Travel Company Guests)
  • Valet Parking: $44 per night, plus tax
  • Magic Kingdom Parking for Shades of Green Guests
  • EPCOT Parking for Shades of Green Guests

Disneyland Guests:
Disneyland parking rates and procedures are different from Walt Disney World, so it helps to review them separately before your trip.

    Hello,

Just wanted to mention that Prime Time Shuttle no longer offers a military discount. I tried all three options you suggested to get the discount and none of them work. When I spoke to them over the phone they were unaware that offer ever existed. I had the primetime shuttle representative reach out to a manager just to be sure and the manager was not aware of that discount either. Just thought I would let you know. Thank you for this wonderful website!!

      Thanks James,

      I appreciate the feedback!

Looks like Prime Shuttle did a reorg into Prime Time Shuttle and dropped the deal.
