Walking Around one of Walt Disney World’s Biggest Theme Parks is the Ultimate Vacation Trek.
EPCOT is my favorite Walt Disney World Theme Park! But many people wonder how much walking they will have to do.
It’s also a very big one with lots of walking required. Disney’s theme parks require full days of walking, but EPCOT will certainly get your step count up for the day!
I do lots of walking on my treadmill to stay in shape to be able to walk all around this big park.
In this post I’ll talk about how many miles you can rack up while touring EPCOT.
EPCOT’s Size
While EPCOT is not Disney World’s largest park by acreage, it does have the most miles worth of walkways that you will be required to tread in order to experience the whole park. EPCOT is 3 times the size of Magic Kingdom.
Walt Disney World Parks Ranked by Size
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom – 540 Acres
- EPCOT – 300 Acres
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios – 135 Acres
- Magic Kingdom – 107 Acres
Note: lots of the Animal Kingdom’s size is wide open nature areas for the animals to roam in (the Kilimanjaro Safari)
Walt Disney World Parks Ranked by Miles of Walkways
- EPCOT – 4.85 Miles
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom – 2.88 Miles
- Magic Kingdom – 2.71 Miles
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios – 1.68 Miles
For example it is 1.3 miles around EPCOT’s World Showcase Lagoon just by itself. That’s almost a many miles of walkways as the Magic Kingdom has in total.
Walking Distances computed with Google Earth.
EPCOT’s Layout
For most of its history EPCOT has been divided into Future World and World Showcase. But in 2019 EPCOT began a multi-year makeover for the Walt Disney World 50-year anniversary in 2021. The entirety of Future World would be broken up into 3 new lands, World Discovery, World Celebration, and World Nature. This naming convention blends with he existing World Showcase. Each area focuses on the second word in the title.
- World Discovery – The left side of Future World
- World Celebration – The center spine of Future World
- World Nature – The right side of Future World
For reference, as you enter EPCOT you are facing south. World Celebration is straight ahead with the World Showcase further straight ahead to the south. World Discovery will be to your left (the east) and World Nature will be to your right (the west).
Epcot was in the midst of this makeover when covid hit. Many plans were changed or scrapped due to money shortages. Construction stopped and then restarted slowly. As of early 2022 major construction is still under way with big sections of the center of Future World (the new World Celebration blocked off). Disney has said this construction will not be completed until sometime in 2023!
EPCOT has 2 park entrances, the front gate main entrance and EPCOT’s International Gateway
World Celebration is themed around new experiences that connect people to one another and the world around them.
Attractions:
- Spaceship Earth
- Journey Into Imagination with Figment
In World Discovery, stories about science, technology, and intergalactic adventure come to life.
Attractions:
- Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind
- Mission: SPACE
- Test Track
World Nature is dedicated to understanding and preserving the beauty, awe, and balance of the natural world.
Attractions:
- Soarin’ Around the World
- Living with the Land
- Awesome Planet
- The Seas with Nemo and Friends
- Turtle Talk with Crush
- Journey of Water
EPCOT’s World Showcase is comprised of 11 “pavilions,” each representing a different country. The pavilions are spread out on a promenade that circles the World Showcase Lagoon.
Attractions:
- Mexico – Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros
- Norway – Frozen Everafter
- China – Reflections of China
- America – The American Adventure
- France – Impressions de France
- France – Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along
- France – Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
- Canada – Canada Far and Wide in Circle-Vision 360
The Minimum That You Will Walk
At a bare minimum it will be 3.7 miles tho walk from EPCOT’s front entrance to every attraction and World Showcase Pavilion and then exit again. That is taking the most logical route to in order to visit them all with minimal backtracking. This distance is measured from the tapstile entrance and does not take into account getting to that point, for instance it is a quarter mile from the furthest Disney bus stop to the entrance tapstiles (tapstiles are the ticket scanners at the entry). Those arriving via monorail or from the parking have a shorter walk to the entrance.
To come up with this distance I first measured the distance between all of the pavilions at the front of the park (Future World, or using the new names World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature) and then toured the World Showcase in a counter clockwise direction.
The route taken on this hike is:
- Main Entrance
- Spaceship Earth
- Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind
- Mission: SPACE
- Test Track
- Journey Into Imagination with Figment
- The Land
- The Seas With Nemo and Friends
- Canada Pavilion
- United Kingdom Pavilion
- France Pavilion
- Morocco Pavilion
- Japan Pavilion
- The American Adventure
- Italy Pavilion
- Germany Pavilion
- China Pavilion
- Norway Pavilion
- Mexico Pavilion
- Main Entrance
If you do any planning for shorter wait times or have dining reservations at a specific location you will have to start backtracking and that will add more distance to your day. EPCOT has a lot of pathways that lead here and there that offer many options as to what walking path to take.
Shortcuts and Rides
With all the walking that you’ll need to do, it smart to cut it down as much as you can!
Here are a few ways to do so.
Get a ride!
Years ago Disney had a small double decker bus that circled the World Showcase and stopped at each country. You could ride this bus for free as much as you wanted to. Sadly, this is long gone a victim of the crowds walking on the walkways. It just wasn’t safe to operate any more.
But you can still get a ride from the front of the World Showcase to the rear on EPCOT’s Friendships. These are water taxis that cruise continually from docks at the front and back of the World Showcase Lagoon.
There are 2 routes:
- From near the entrance to World Showcase and Germany
- From near the entrance to World Showcase and Morocco
Note: Due to manning shortages, only the Morocco route is running at this time.
The 5-10 minute ride on a Friendship boat will knock 0.33 miles off of your walk from the front to the back. You will of course skip a couple countries on the way, Mexico, Norway, and China on the Germany route and Canada, UK, and France on the Morocco route.
Take a Shortcut!
There are several shortcuts to be had when walking around EPCOT. Always look for the shortest path.
There are 3 paths that lead to the World Showcase. Three of these are from the front of the park
- The main path from World Celebration to the north end of World Showcase
- From Journey Into Imagination to a spot 300 feet to the west of where the main path ends
- From Test Track to a spot 400 feet east of where the main path ends
These side paths also connect to the main path and in some situations it may be shorter to cross over based on your starting and ending locations.
Choose Your Entrance!
There are two entrances to Epcot, the Main Entrance and the International Gateway.
The third path leads from the Epcot Resort Area to EPCOT’s International Gateway back entrance that opens into World Showcase between the UK and France.
Entering the park here is a step saver for those who want to focus on the World Showcase for its Festivals or headliner attractions like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Elsa and Anna’s Frozen Everafter. Entering here cuts out the long walk from the front of the park.
The International Gateway was originally an entrance for those staying at EPCOT’s Deluxe Resorts, the Beach Club Resort, the Yacht Club Resort, the BoardWalk Inn, as well as the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts. Since the opening of the Disney Skyliner Station at the International Gateway guests from Disney’s Riviera Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort, Art of Animation Resort, and Pop Century Resort also have this option. The Skyliner also goes to Disney’s Hollywood Studios connecting these 2 Disney parks together.
