The most convenient place to stay if your Walt Disney World vacation revolves around Magic Kingdom.
If Magic Kingdom is your family’s top priority, the Magic Kingdom Resort Area is one of the best places you can stay at Walt Disney World.
This area includes some of Disney’s most iconic resorts, the famous Monorail Resorts, relaxing boat transportation, and even one of the most unique military lodging options anywhere in the Disney bubble: Shades of Green.
But while all of these resorts are considered part of the Magic Kingdom Resort Area, they are not all the same. Some are ultra-convenient for park access. Some are more peaceful and removed. Some are a better value for military families than others.
Let’s break down what the Magic Kingdom Resort Area includes and how to decide which resort is right for your trip.

Location Overview
The Magic Kingdom Resort Area sits around Magic Kingdom, Bay Lake, and Seven Seas Lagoon. This is the most transportation-rich area for guests who plan to spend a lot of time at Magic Kingdom.
That matters more than many first-time visitors realize. When you stay close to Magic Kingdom, you can often get to and from the park faster, return for a mid-day break more easily, and avoid some of the end-of-night transportation headaches that come with staying farther away.
This area is especially attractive for families with young kids, guests using strollers, and anyone who likes taking a break in the afternoon before heading back to the park at night.
Transportation in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area
One of the biggest advantages of this area is transportation variety. Depending on your resort, you may be able to reach Magic Kingdom by Monorail, boat, bus, or on foot.
That flexibility can be a huge quality-of-life improvement during a Disney trip.
- Monorail: Available at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
- Walking: Disney’s Contemporary Resort is the easiest walk to Magic Kingdom, and Disney’s Grand Floridian also offers a walking path
- Boats: Available from the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, and the Contemporary area
- Buses: Available throughout the area for the parks and Disney Springs
It is important to remember that being in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area does not mean every resort has equal access. The Monorail Resorts are the most convenient overall. Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness feel closer than many other resorts, but they still rely on boats and buses rather than the Monorail. Shades of Green is in this area as well, but transportation works differently there.
The Resorts in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area
Disney’s Contemporary Resort
The Contemporary is the most convenient resort for Magic Kingdom access. You can walk to the park, and the Monorail runs right through the resort. That combination is hard to beat.
The overall feel here is sleek and modern rather than heavily themed, but the location is the star. For families who prioritize efficiency over atmosphere, the Contemporary is one of the strongest choices on all of Disney property.
Best for: The easiest Magic Kingdom access on property
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
The Polynesian is one of Walt Disney World’s original resorts and remains one of its most beloved. It combines Monorail access, boat transportation, tropical theming, and a great lineup of dining options.
This is the kind of resort people choose when they want convenience and atmosphere. It feels special in a way that goes beyond just location.
Best for: Families who want Magic Kingdom convenience with strong theming and dining
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
The Grand Floridian is Disney’s flagship resort and the most luxurious option in this area. It offers Monorail access, boat transportation, and a walking path to Magic Kingdom.
For some families, it is a dream stay. For others, it can feel like more resort than they really need. Still, when discounts line up well, it can be worth a close look.
Best for: Deluxe stays, special occasions, and guests who want the most upscale option
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
Wilderness Lodge is one of the most beautifully themed resorts at Walt Disney World. It feels tucked away and peaceful, but it is still reasonably convenient to Magic Kingdom by boat.
It does not have Monorail access, which keeps it from being in the very top convenience tier, but many guests happily trade that for the resort’s atmosphere, price relative to other Deluxe resorts, and relaxing setting.
Best for: Guests who want strong theming and Magic Kingdom proximity without Monorail pricing
The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort
The Cabins offer a very different kind of Disney stay. They give families more room, a quieter setting, and a more outdoorsy experience than most other Disney resorts.
They can be a very good fit for larger families or guests who want space to spread out, but transportation is less direct and the resort itself is large, so getting around can take more time.
Best for: Families wanting more space and a quieter retreat
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
Fort Wilderness is its own world. With campsites, internal transportation, outdoor recreation, boat service to Magic Kingdom, and a very different overall feel from the rest of Disney property, it appeals to a specific kind of traveler.
If you love the outdoors or already enjoy camping, it can be a fantastic choice. If not, it may feel less convenient than the rest of this area.
Best for: Campers, RV travelers, and guests who enjoy a rustic Disney experience
Shades of Green
Shades of Green is the military resort at Walt Disney World, and while it is located in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area, it operates differently from the Disney-owned resorts around it.
For eligible military families, Shades of Green can offer outstanding value, especially when compared to nearby Deluxe Disney resorts. The rooms are large, the rates can be very attractive, and many Disney resort perks still apply. But transportation is one of the biggest differences.
Shades of Green buses do not operate exactly like Disney resort transportation, and trips to Magic Kingdom usually involve going to the Transportation and Ticket Center rather than directly to the park gates. That can make it feel less convenient than the nearby Monorail Resorts, even though it is in the same general area.
For many military families, though, that tradeoff is worth it for the savings and room size.
Best for: Eligible military families who want strong value near Magic Kingdom
Who Should Stay in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area?
This area is a great fit for many trips, but especially for certain types of travelers.
You should strongly consider staying here if:
- Magic Kingdom is your most important park
- You want easier mid-day breaks
- You are traveling with young children
- You value multiple transportation options
- You want the most classic Walt Disney World resort experience
You may want to consider another area if:
- EPCOT or Disney’s Hollywood Studios are your bigger priorities
- You are trying to keep hotel costs as low as possible
- You do not expect to go back to your room during the day
Military Family Considerations
This is one of the most important resort areas for military families to understand, because it includes both some of Disney’s most expensive resorts and one of the best value options on property.
The Disney-owned resorts in this area may be eligible for the Disney Armed Forces Salute Room Discount, though availability varies by resort and travel dates.
Shades of Green is often the biggest comparison point. It usually offers far more room for the money than the nearby Disney Deluxe resorts, but with different transportation logistics and without Disney ownership.
That means the right choice depends on your family’s priorities:
- Best convenience: Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian
- Best Deluxe value: Wilderness Lodge
- Best military-specific value: Shades of Green
- Best for space: Cabins at Fort Wilderness or Shades of Green
If you are comparing Disney-owned resorts against Shades of Green, be sure to look at more than just the nightly rate. Transportation, room size, dining options, and how often you plan to visit Magic Kingdom all matter.
